I remember reading a study about hamster wheel. Something about pet hamster need toys like the wheel to be active in captivity, while wild ones don't because they have enough enrichment and exercise. Turns out when they put hamster wheel outside, wild mice often stops by for a run. (also frogs and slugs somehow). They first put food nearby to bait the mice to the area, but after removing the food, they still come to play every now and then.

Dr.Plants did a great job aclimating her to life in the wild (or as wild as a tank can get), but animals that have been raised in captivity do not know how to check for predators, or how to find food, and instincts do not do the job fast enough. I was worried when I started the video, but I'm glad it was actually thought through and monitored!

Dirt can indeed poison them if you just dig some up from your yard. Don't get stuff from just outside or whatever if you're making something for a pet enclosure. Bacteria parasites or unwelcomed bugs that could cause problems might've laid eggs or actively live in it; stuff that's been properly treated is what you're after. Be mindful of the pet as well! Some reptiles, just for example, shouldn't be given dirt or most forms of substrate because it can cause a medical condition called impaction where it makes them unable to pass waste.

That is true for Betta tanks, too. People are told they can live in glass vases, and stuff, but the truth is they are a (tropical) fish, so they need warm water, and even though they can surface to breath air, they do better with oxygenated water. I found a ten gallon tank is the best habitat. Anything bigger is too much for them. And putting in some fast moving bottom feeders keeps them active without being able to harm the other fish. At one time, people were told they could be put in a vase with a certain type of plant on top. The claim was they would eat at the roots, and didn't even need to be fed. The problem was that Betta are carnivores and need special food, so the poor fish would end up starving to death. Never, ever trust a pet store. The employees are taught to sell product, not truth.

That plastic cage from Tiny Tales isn’t suitable for hamsters as you saw. It's best to use a glass or proper wire cage with plenty of space for them to move around comfortably, at least 450 square inches of floor space. For bedding, avoid cedar or pine as they can harm hamsters. Instead, opt for paper-based bedding like Carefresh or aspen shavings. Make sure to provide a wheel that's at least 8 inches in diameter for proper exercise, and a hiding spot for them to feel secure. I use a wooden wheel that’s gentle on their feet. Proper ventilation and regular cleaning are also essential for their health! Tho, using a plastic cage temporarily while you're cleaning a larger cage or like you did Dr Plants, it can be fine for short periods. *Just wanted to write this on here, cya.*

I get the videos intention but hamsters 100% have all of their natural instincts. Pet stores lie about hamster care in order to target children into buying an animal that has a short-life span in a tiny enclosure, they do not care about their quality of life; pet store hamsters are also bred incredibly cruelly. An ideal hamster set-up and quite frankly the bare minimum would consist of 800-1000 sqr inches of uninterrupted floor space, 30cm of paper or aspen bedding, a 10-12 inch wheel and forage, sprays, tons of hide-aways and clutter, including ceramic, cork logs, branches etc... AND a sand bath (NOT a dust bath). Hamsters diets should consist of a variety of seeds and vegetables and fruit but less frequently. They're omnivores so you can also give them plain cooked chicken and dried mealworms. Hamsters should NOT be kept in pairs, they're solitary animals in captivity as they're VERY territorial skittish so they will hurt/kill each other, even by accident, one type of dwarf hamster can live together in the wild as they have enough room to escape and aren't trapped in a cage. Hamsters should NOT use plastic tunnels, they have poor ventilation and their feet can get stuck in the tiny holes, if their cheeks are full of food they can also get stuck in these tunnels, if given appropriate bedding depth they wont need these tunnels anyway. Hamsters should NOT use hamster balls; Hamsters have poor vision and rely on their sense of smell. In a hamster ball, hamsters cannot smell. Similarly to the tunnels the ventilation is poor and the holes can get their feet stuck which in some cases has led to amputation. When a hamster is in a ball it 'looks' like they're enjoying it because they're rolling around but in reality they're just trying to escape and its a ball so of course when they move it'll move. Hamsters are terrible for children as they are skittish, fragile and they're nocturnal so it isn't likely that the children will see the hamster. This may lead to a frustrated child waking up the hamster but this is terrible for the hamster, never wake a hamster up from its sleep. One more important and interesting note: be WARNED, hamsters DO NOT HIBERNATE. This type of 'hibernation' is called Torpor and it is FORCED. Torpor occurs when a hamsters environment is either too cold of they lack resources, the hamsters body is quite literally shutting down and going to sleep to preserve energy. It is IMPORTANT to wake them up, but you have to do it gradually as if they wake up too quickly or their body temperature changes drastically they will go into shock and die, start by warming them up with your own body heat, then a warm towel, give them lukewarm sugar water through a syringe for added electrolytes. If you are confused wether your hamster is in TORPOR or DEAD, take it to the vet OR if you're quite certain its dead but are still a little anxious, after a few hours its body should go STIFF. If the hamsters body is still limp, do not dispose of it, take it to the vet to make sure its dead; its not that expensive to get a hamster confirmed dead/cremated and most vets will do it. (Hamsters need to go to exotic vets usually, but when my hamster passed away recently at a very old age, we took her to our local vet and they were kind enough to cremate her). Be responsible everyone, do your research before getting an animal; if you aren't prepared to give them appropriate care, get a different animal that you can care for. Sincerely, somebody who knows a lot about hamster care.

So something to note is that pelleted food like that is actually formulated for their health to prevent them from getting too much fat in their diet, seeds are very high in fat so they're great as treats but Timothy hay is a very important source of nutrition for them, along with protein in the form of bugs, and fiber and vitamins in fresh fruits and veg
@nil_idkk21 күн бұрын
@@OllieOxyn nah pelleted food is completely unnecessary. Good quality feed (with protein like dead worms), herbs and sometimes alittle bit fresh fruits or veggies are just fine.

Hello, as a hamster owner, never buy from petsmart since they buy animals from pet mills, and I’m very glad that you noticed her chewing on the bars and made her a bigger home, please make sure the tunnels are not used, she has a big enough wheel, lots of chewable things and toys, sand baths, (and great job on the digging supplies) and much more. Still very good setup!
@Blood111924 күн бұрын
is it safe to buy pets from petco? i really want a pet there
@Creamzplayzroblox24 күн бұрын
@ I’d say so your research on the animal to see if it’s good for your home, then see if there are any pet breeders (good ones) or animal shelters that have them. If you can’t find any pets, then go one KZbin, google etc, and see if petco or petsmart is a safe place to buy that animal.

When scientists put a hamster wheel in the wild, they discovered that mice and other similar animals enjoyed running on it, even though they have the entirety of nature to run though and not hit a glass wall. I’m not surprised Karen likes the wheel 😁

1:22 That is not the ideal pet store setup. don't listen to them, and it is not good for them to chew on the bars. The natural ones are supposed to be good, I get it, but it is actually hard to clean, and you probably should use normal bedding, but I do like the natural elements you added. Just make sure everything is hamster safe.

I used to have mice and they lived in what I called "The Pink Palace". It consisted of two separate buildings with 5 floors all connected by tubes, with a different obstacle in each room: a sea-saw, a roundabout, a maze etc. And do you know what my mice liked to do most? Non-stop, in fact... RUN IN THE DARN WHEEL!! 😂😂 This video was awesome. ❤

That's what has always bothered me with chain pet stores they tend to sell tiny cages hamsters are used to traveling miles every night before coming back to the burrow it really doesn't give them the space they need.
