I believe I found an error in bishop's simplified formula (min 30:30)... I realized that Ψ is directly multiplied by shear strength... instead of being multiplied by (1/Ψ) ... I verified in different sources ... Does anybody agree ?

variable references are totally different to that used in my UNSW course, however, great explanation of ordinary methods. Thanks HEAPS.

@19:22 I believe P is effective pressure itself (@17:46), so we should Not subtract pore pressure again.

Can you please tell me how to calculate interslice normal Forces (E1- Er) in bishop method? 27:21
@danieldavies41223 жыл бұрын
Hi Prof. At 11:23, do you mean to say that the ratio of the shear strength to the mobilised shear stress is assumed to be the same for each slice? This ratio is factor of safety, which I think you said the other way around. Your statement about the assumption is still valid, I am just checking for my understanding. With gratitude, Dan

How do you calculate alpha for each slice? And how do you program/automate this on Excel or a spreadsheet?

I think he explains at 23:55. You draw in AutoCad and measure it there

A canal with depth 7 m and side slopes 1:1 has the following properties : cohesion 10 kN/m2, angle of internal friction 20, voids ratio 0.6 and specific gravity 2.7. Stability numbers for a slope 1:1 with angle of internal frictions 20 and 10.3 are 0.062 and 0.125 respectively. Factor of safety of the slope with respect to cohesion when the canal runs full is ? answer factor of safety = 2.2 sir can you give data ad farmula how to solve this question?

I want to ask a question.I have calculated Fs from Michalowski’s (2002) 1.875 and I have calculated Fs=2.047 from slope stability program.What is the reason of this difference?

No way to tell from the information provided. I would comment that I would characterize the two Fs you have computed as nearly the same, i.e. 1.9 vs 2.0

is there any good reference about how to determine the number of slices?
@introductiontogeotechnical49764 жыл бұрын
There probably is some research on this from a decade or more ago. However, with numerical tools (even just using a spreadsheet) it so easy to divide the slope up into 10 or more slices, I don't think anyone worries much about this. For typical cases I use 20 or more slices. Can be much higher for complicated cases with non-circular slip surfaces. I don't even expect students in class to to hand calculations any more.
