Just to help anyone out that is trying this on a Xbox version 1.6: I don't believe it enters this service mode. After making my cable I was having no luck getting it to stay on. I checked all my connection and all my solder points, made sure there was no breaks in the wire and still nothing seemed to work. frustrated at that point I googled it an found a video with someone trying to dump the eeprom on an version 1.6 and it appeared that they were trying to time the mouse click for the read at the exact moment they turned the xbox on. So, I gave it go and boom timed it perfect the first time and read the eeprom no problems. I could be wrong but thats what worked for me :) Thank you so much for your videos they really helped. Its getting more and more difficult finding info about the xbox as time goes on. Now I can bring some more dead boxes back to life so the Xbox original can live on!

Another pointer for 1.6 owners. If you boot a 1.6 console with the LPC pins 13 (SCL) and 14 (SDA) connected to your reader, the xbox detects this and will do the three-boot thing and then shut down. This appears to be normal behaviour for a 1.6 console. I was never able to dump the eeprom in this mode, including reading the eeprom at power on etc. as described elsewhere. What worked for me is that I allowed the xbox to boot with the DVD and HDD disconnected to get error code 07. At this point, the xbox stays on and you should NOW carefully connect your reader to the LPC. The eeprom can be dumped easily and as many times as you like from here. Hope this helps someone, my xbox is hardware revision 1.6a (with samsung memory) and the LPC holes are open & not soldered closed.

I managed getting a WinXP PC going just to use the serial port and PonyProg, wiring up the harness minus a 9-pin serial D connector - I had to jab the wires into the PC serial port and hot-glue them in! The resistors and diodes were sourced from broken TV boards. All worked first time and I rescued 2 bricked Xbox EEPROMS. Actually much easier than trying to build a new drive and get It locked with the retrieved key so far...

Slot1Gamer, can't thank you enough, using you tutorial i've revived one xbox, which i had with dead HDD for about a year :) Used 4,7 kOhms resistors for mine, worked fine too. Used some old serial to rj45 cable from some network switch for this, extracted eeprom.bin, changed HDD key, to another xbox hdd hey, i had laying as backup after HDD upgrade to bigger one. And writed eeprom back to console. Voila :) Thanks again, your tutorials ar great!

Thank you so much for this video and the how to make the reader video. I was able to bring my first xbox 1.0 version that I bought new, back to life. I messed up a drive swap mod years ago and lucky to find the desktop drive that I has saved the original eeprom on. I made the reader and changed the drive key to match a parts xbox I bought. In PonyProg if you are getting a "Hardware error, is the interface properly connected? (-14)". Change the COM# port in Options>Setup to a different COM# port, PonyProg is trying to read the wrong port without the D9 cable. I have a VGA and a Serial Port connector on my laptop and I had set it to read COM4 at first which was the VGA port. Switched to COM1 and it read the EEPROM.

Evaldas65 Hello, so what you need to do is build a new xbox HDD and lock it again. Download a program called XBHDM, you can add your EEPROM.bin file into this software and build a new HDD. There is a USB version. Basically you create a bootable XBHDM usb drive, copy over your EEPROM.bin file to the correct folder. Boot up the usb and create a new disk, then LOCK the HDD drive using the XBHDM software.

For the dash files I'd recommend you SID5 Pimped. It's a pack of XboxHDM but you can choose what dash you want: UnleashX,EvoX,Avalaunch,XBMC and MS Dash. You just need to copy the EEPROM.BIN to the eeprom folder,then build the ISO using the batch file provided in each folder. This is what I'm definitely going to use with my old v1.4. Not sure what dash to use,since I also have a 1.0 running UnleashX.

I bought a used Xbox and it seems it's modded with some sort of parasite chip that has been soldered into those service holes. Can I still probe it? Edit: Yes I can. I mean I could. The exact holes that were needed were not occupied but the parasite board was in the way so I lifted the motherboard and probed it from behind. If you mix up the pins it's not a problem it just won't work, I turned the pins and I could successfully read the EEPROM. Thank you for the tutorial!

Thanks. I am wondering how is this differnet from using EEPROM backup programs like ConfigMagic or EEPROM Backuperer on the Xbox where it backs up the EEPROM to Drive C or E on the Xbox and you can FTP into it and copy it over to your laptop? Much easier and doesnt involve opening an Xbox.

If I want to restore a 160GB SATA HDD to it's normal state so I can use it again with my PC, how do I do this? I don't have a desktop PC with IDE HDD connections, only SATA and the HDD is SATA and not IDE anyway. I have the eeprom.bin file from my Xbox on my computer if that matters. Please help! I cannot get the console to enter service mode. I wired up the adapter, and I'm pretty sure it's correct. In the video, you said pins 12 and 13. Did you mean 13 and 14? With all cables and pins connected, I either get the flubber logo and Error 07 with AV cable plugged in, or orange and green flashes without AV cable plugged in. Either way, I cannot read anything in Pony Prog. If my cable was incorrectly wired would this stop the console from entering service mode? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Check this. I got it working. Everything was wired correctly. I was using a USB to Serial adapter on 64 bit Windows 10. I plugged the cable into an actual serial port on an old computer (32 bit Windows 7) and everything worked. I made this using plain audio cable(bare cable with 3.5mm jack on the end, chopped it up. 3 cables, yellow red white. Used white as ground.) I checked continuity with a multimeter, everything is connected properly. I get a (Bus busy or hardware error (-11)) as a response from the program. I'm pretty sure everything is hooked up correctly. Could it be the cable, the jack, the software, the computer I'm using? Any ideas?

Sounds like a port error, Windows 10 and 64bit windows are terrible with this stuff. You could try a virtual machine or Linux

@@Slot1Gamer I have the same error. I switched from 64bit to 32bit system+windows 7, and still "Bus busy or hardware error (-11)"... I have a USB to RS232 adapter, for which i use the correct FTDI driver. The version before 2.12.24 should be good for 32bit/win7. So i'm dead in the water here as well. I always though baudrate and parity should be set correctly, but maybe this is done with the calibration test....

Chris Cooper ok, so once you have your EEPROM.bin file(you may need to extract the HDD key). Make a bootable version of XBHDM or some other DOS HDD unlocking software, copy the eeprom.bin file in with the bootable medium you made (either CD or usb). You will need to disconnect all other HDD's, if you have an IDE port use that, or you can try PCI to IDE cards or SATA to IDE adapter (I don't know if the adapters will allow you to send ATA commands to unlock). Boot up the XBHDM or hatever you use and choose unlock HDD, point it to the bin file containing the HDD key and it should unlock the hdd.. Other option is write you HDD key to another console, you will need to have the new console modded the same way if it's TSOP or modchipped

With hdd keys on the disk itself, you usually need to use ATA commands via the service tools. If the disk is worth it, go to a data recovery place that specialise in hdds and ask how much it’ll be to wipe the key. Don’t think there is much time involved, just the machines to do it are expensive

yes, this is with the 1.6's. you need to connect fast sda, scl after you back on the xbox, and you can read out once. you need to restart every time the xbox to do it again, but you can do it with this cable. after that just use jrocky5 new qemu solution (or use from that softmod stuff to make and write an .iso with xboxhdm) to generate any hdd for your box, anytime, IDE or SATA HDD doesn't matter.
