Odporucam nalepit papierovy stitok s nazvom na kazdu vec, ktoru mas doma. Lepsie to pomaha vizualizovat a pamatat. Ked budes potrebovat dane slovo, predstavis si v mysli svoju domacnost, vybavi sa ti nejaka asociacia s danym predmetom, a v tom momente si spomenies aj na slovo. Aj appka je fajn, ale appka je intenzivne ucenie, a mozog potrebuje oddych. Stitky mozog oklamu, a ucis sa aj ked sa neucis ;)

Hi Kim, I think the best way to learn a Slavic language as quickly as possible is to learn the basics of grammar, but not get too deeply because it is very difficult (because of declension, seven cases, etc.), and rather get focus on the real conversation with the local people. Your big advantage is that your Slovak husband can help you. Don't worry to speak Slovak, even if you make grammatical mistakes - Slovaks and Czechs will understand you well and you'll get better and better. I know foreigners who came to the Czech Republic and after a year or two they can speak Czech at a very decent level, although of course they probably will never speak as a native speaker. But that isn't important. Important is to understand each other. It's all about the will to learn the language. In the Czech language there is a proverb: "You are human as many times as the number of languages you speak". I wish you good luck with learning Slovak. Regards, Michal.

It is very admirable that you are learning our language. Especially since some people which were born here and live here refuse to learn Slovak. Maybe try to watch something you like and what you know in english and play it in slovak. For example tv show Friends is now on HBO in english and slovak version. Or some other movies, or fairy tales where they don´t speak too much, or talk about complicated things like science, or laws.

I agree with all of your tips. And there are many more of them. For instance - self-speaking (or shower-speaking :) ), using a monolingual dictionary, plan dialogs in advance (trying to guess or plan what a native speaker is going to say in a specific situation - you can prepare a dialog in the restaurant). Those are all tips when you don't need anyone other to use them, so you can practice them on your own anytime and anywhere. And then you can talk with native speakers in your surroundings, talking online or chatting. How do you learn Slovak, Kim? Do you "have" a teacher - "Máš" učiteľa? :D Or do you skype or chat with somebody?

Great way of acquiring new vocabulary are tourist brochures. They are usually in more languages + english, they are usually about interesting topic which his important because if you are bored your mind wanders and you are not learning anything. Another great source for absolute beginners and especially those with small kids are TV programs from small children. They usually speak slowly in them, articulate words and you can catch what is going on from visuals too... trust me small kids do not car what language is it in as long as that purple dinosaur keeps doing funny stuff.

Hi Kimberly. Slovencina nasa krasne ty zvuky mas. Yes you got learning new language a pretty good. Vocabulary is very important more words you know it's better. Grammar in Slovak is complicated but not in 1st place when you learn new language. They do mistake in Slovakia when teaching other language always mixing grammar into it, important is learning, listening and understanding and of course talking which is never or seldom practicing in Slovakia. I'm glad you listen to my advice about childrens programs, they language is simple and much easier to understand. I see you making great progress keeping my fingers crossed for you. Hi Kim, where to start...and how to continue? As you have said, you have a slovak husband so my opinion is that thing with personal language tutors is just odd. He is the one who will guide you out of deep waters but you have to swim yourself. What for example helped me was 1. not being in situation where someone can speak for you. Where you have to pass your message on yourself. And also receive. 2. Learn, dont memorize. For example listen a lot to government media news. You dont have to believe them anything at all (this may be often recomended), but one thing you will get guaranteed is proper language, with minimal slang etc. And just get used to phrase things as they do. Try to concentrate on pronunciation, accents, intonation. Dont bother with grammar at all yet. This is how we say it and dont worry why, we just do it. At this stage grammar complicates things and for example misunderstanding at 1:45 is called zvratne zameno sa, which is correctly used by vast majority of slovaks but rarely someone unerstands the politics sorry grammar behind it. Once you will be comfortable in this I call it kitchen level, you will automatically start answering the radio presenter, argue with the newsflash, ... Maybe not loud, maybe just with your inner voice, but that is a clear sign to look into grammar. because you have the habbits already in,m - i mean correct ones as they do it in the news...- and the grammar now will make much more sense. You wont have to learn it, only realize it. My opinion. Someone can have his own, but this worked few times for me and also others. Then you will see what difference is between Jest ranajky a Ranajkovat. If I have something for breakfast what i do really not like, what i would never ever choose but it was the only thing available, then i just eat breakfast. But if i enjoy my whatever breakfast, and i enjoy it so much that i do not want to be disturbed from it i politely answer to ANY question: Ranajkujem.... And mistakes? Do not worry at all. Everyone does them, and that makes life sometimes unexpectedly fun. You are already making a lot of progress, so I wish you a good luck in it, plenty of enjoyment and fun.

I'm trying to learn English. Unfortunately, locals speak Czech. 🤔 When I read various articles I find many idioms that cannot be translated "word by word". Google Translator is not of much help, of course. In most cases I get funny or non-understendable translations. Thus I often go to Urban Dictionary for explanation. It's not an easy way to learn English. I'm afraid there's not a Slovak/Czech alternative to Urban Dictionary. Kim, your pronunciation is getting better and better. There's still a need of fine tuning but remember, it's Slovak that you learn. IMHO, Slavic languages are more difficult than anything else. So be patient and focus on detail. You're on the right track. Congratulations! 👍

@@feggyo Tak vidíš. Máš v Androide nastavené SK prostredie? Ja mám CZ. Prekladač je od Googlu a vymýšľa si pekné hlúposti. Asi má Google niekoľko verzií prekladača. O aktualizácie sa stará Google, tak neviem. Podľa mňa skrátka Google Translator stojí za prd. Keď tvrdia, že sa prekladač zlepšuje, tak by to mali poriadne otestovať.

Yes, this has always interested me why Slovak is difficult, because in Slovak that what you write then you also say. In English, you write words differently and pronounce differently Therefore it does not make sense Ha ha ha

O koľko je potom pre nás ľahšie učiť sa angličtinu, keď je gramatika o toľko jednoduchšia. Ale zložitejšia gramatika je všeobecná vlastnosť slovanských jazykov.

I don't think there's an easy way to learn the language :) unfortunately... it takes plenty of time and effort :) get a girlfriend, or a slovak boyfriend and talk, talk, talk and... yes ...talk, as much as you can! Definitely helps! Dont get frustrated, if it "doesn't go according to the plan immediately"! Good luck to all of you who have decided to take on the challenge :)

Rules of english i personaly hate the most. My english teacher always says english is language for apes. Because it s like math, you have formula and you can make sentence. And that s what i hate the most.....because slovak is free have difficult grammar but we are not held by some formula or strict formula it s better explenation And one other thing english times 🤦 who was that stupid and made 385950380 times when you have only past present and future Change opinion this is what i most hate about english

@@imlflaw How do you work that one out ? Czech has 14 basic paradigms, Slovak only 12. Czech has 7 grammatical cases. Other than in poetry, Slovak has only 6 functional grammatical cases. In Czech, there are 14 spellings of the word "one" depending upon grammatical case and paradigm and number. Perhaps you should do a bit of homework before making sweeping and erroneous statements. You may like to start with " Wikipedia Czech declension ". You may be lost within the first few paragraphs but, at least, try.
