This is one of those EXTRA SLOW and CALM kinda episode. We left Manhasset Bay with less than 5 kts of wind and slowly sailed our way through the Foggy Cape Cod Canal.

Life distracted me from KZbin for a while...last I watched you were at Ft Lauderdale...now you are sailing out a lock in the Netherlands. I'm catching up and it is so much fun to see you sailing through my old stomping grounds. Gotta time Plum Gut carefully. Good old Block Island. Should have waited to clean the prop until then. Now I am surrounded by seas of soy and corn in the Midwest...

A little local sailing knowledge: Long Island (the land mass) heats up during the daytime. The wind coming in from the Atlantic Ocean is pushed up to a higher altitude by the heat and it goes over Long Island Sound. The air during the daytime can get very light at times As the wind passes over Long Island Sound it cools, loses altitude, and comes down again on the Connecticut side of Long Island Sound during the hot part of the day. As the Long Island land mass cools down, the wind drops in altitude again. Soooo ... as the Atlantic Ocean breeze drops in altitude, a Southerly breeze usually kicks in every day about 3 PM during the Spring, Summer and early Fall on Long Island Sound ... you can see the leading edge of the wind as it turns the water darker and comes across the water! Very cool! Local Long Island Sound racers factor in the resulting predictable wind shift in advance, hoping for a nice lift or a knock depending on what point of sail they are on. If you want to sail right up the coastline, try taking the ocean side of Long Island. The breeze will usually enter the beach at a right angle so if you stay close in to shore you can sail right along the beach most of the way. If you find yourself coming back this way sometime, pull into Manhasset Bay and pull your boat into "Louie's" in Port Washington. A lot of big boat sailboat racers hang out there and can fill you with a lot of local knowledge and flavor while your having a nice meal. Louie's; Long Island Sound, Manhasset Bay, VHF radio channel 68

Wow. I am SO GLAD KZbin recommended your Channel. What a jewel, and an AWESOME COUPLE. I will watch every single video. I love sailing vids. It is my dream to find a sailing partner. I am too old (62) to sail on my own. But I just wish. :))) It is such an awesome life to be able to venture the world over the water with someone you absolutely are in love with. I follow another couple who does this, and are just loving it. That couple is around the same age as you, but there is an older couple whose channel I follow. This couple is very seasoned. They've taken us on some awesome ventures, so I am looking forward to yours.

Just for what it’s worth, the “bugs” Dan got on him when he went in the water were Amphipods, kind of little shrimp. They looked like Gammarid Amphipods from what I could see. Very innocuous little guys.

must admit fog and little to no wind is my worst , have been caught out in a dying breeze sails slapping about fog coming in , no motor and the current pushing us toward rocks way out and serious swell , visibility probably 50m or less could hear the swell against the rocks and not see them could even smell the guano on the rocks , its the first time in my life that i used and was grateful for the vhf at least i made sure that that was in working order , i called a friend for a tow ,not a moment too soon that was my worst fog experience but stayed calm and made the right call , pride and arrogance has no place on a boat . By the way while my story is so long , the work and effort you've put into Uma is fantastic , she looks great my wife loves the galley and the tile cladding on Uma , very commendable , wifey also wants new sheets/rope , lines like you guys have all nice and colour coded , I told her all in good time . absolutely love your footage and camera angles and the slowmo , brilliantly done , keep posting i need to keep me dream alive I wish I had the money to contribute and become a patreon , once my site is up and i start a patreon account i will pay it forward. Thank you all that support sailing Uma for making it possible for KiKa and Dan to do what they do.

You should try sailing on the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. I remember one morning the fog was so bad we took one of our boats with radar into the pier. We had a guy on the bow and he didn't see the pontoon next to the pier until we were less than 10ft from it! The radar told us we were close, but that close the radar is useless. Good thing we were going as slow as the boat would go and still maintain steerage.

Really looking forward to the trip, but fear that you won't get much time to explore. Most others i've seen try to hit greenland in june some in may. Still cold but there is only 3-4 weeeks of summer in the north. My trip in alsaka, it was snowing middle of aug and below 0 most of the day by 20th of sept. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

I used to live at the East end of the Cape Cod Canal (for 34 years) and kept a sloop at Sandwich Marina (which you passed to starboard just before exiting the canal). It was fun to watch you sail past my Alma-mater (Mass. Maritime Academy) at the West end of the canal, too. You're going to love Nova Scotia, and Halifax is one of my favorite cities to visit. Ya know, it's nice to see someone who sails up north once in a while. I'm of course, referring to your trip to Nova Scotia. Seems like all these other sailing channels are bouncing around the Carribean or the south pacific, and all they do is make vids on going back and forth to the market, or eating some kind of fish ona deserted beach. All fine aand dandy ….. once in a while. You might be interested in knowing that in one of those seaport towns in N.S., there, tied up is the actual sailing ship that they used in the movie starring Marlon Brando. Anyways, kudo's to you two great folks who are riding north to the bounding main.
