A cool example I can think is Shadow Dio's 623X grab from Heritage for the Future. It's a very reactable command grab where S.Dio envelops his hand in a blue fuck-off aura, making it pretty useless in neutral. On oki, it wouldn't be great on any other character, but S.Dio is a character with a ludicrous amount of oki options (cross-up, fake cross-up, double cross-up, double _fake_ cross-up, etc) with two extremely ways to set-up a hard knockdown (2A loop combo or regular throw), meaning that 623X is a totally valid option after a little conditioning. @TheLostSeven2 жыл бұрын
Another example of this type of move being not only good but practical (it at least 1 way) is from Soul Calibur 2. You have Taki's unblockable that's cancelable into sidestep for continued pressure. The thing that makes this such a great part of her gameplay is it makes the whole screen dim and fire appear on her hands even when you cancel as fast as possible, so you can mask the intent to hit them with it because they are used to you making the whole screen go dim over and over again until you let one rip. And its not a small amount of damage either, its a pretty sizable hit that you can just sneak in every now and then. Love SC2 and just wanted to share how sick it is you can make a person not react to a very slow, but painfully obvious attack, because she uses to reset for pressure so much.
@lordflashheart37412 жыл бұрын
Well, while 1 of Taki's unblockables (she has 2, but only one is really useful) is one of the better ones in SC2, lots of characters in that game has unblockables with the same utility as most of them share these properties. Taki's is quite good because it's one of the faster ones, but plenty of the cast has these tools to be sneaky with. Shoutout to Cervantes who probably has the best one, as his 1a+b when cancelled leaves him backturned for a few frames, making him able to use his bt a+b, which is a safe mid that leads to a vicious combo that will do more damage than actually landing any of his unblockables.
@OccuredJakub122 жыл бұрын
It's rare but I've seen charge Dusts used in high level play hitting raw. They're meant to be used when the enemy's mental stack is high and they're expecting every other option aside from this. Or the famous Axl antiair dust where the player uses the fact they're partially offscreen and the enemy is expecting to block a faster antiair, plus that they tend to block low right after landing on the ground to get a fully charged Dust to hit. Uncharged Dust is also a mixup with it that means enemies are discouraged from just punishing it right on reaction lest they get counterhit.
@HarveyVolodarskii2 жыл бұрын
I remember at one point you said you don’t play the newer Smash games, so I figured I could quickly say that Ultimate’s big slow kill moves are for the most part a little better. King Dedede’s Jet Hammer hits ledge, which works really well for Dedede because of his great ledgetrapping. Mii Brawler’s Exploding Side Kick has a lot of armour and some neat momentum tricks. The shotos’ Focus Attack and Little Mac’s Straight Lunge are rare examples of utility big strong moves; because they can be cancelled, you can armour a hit or two while recovering, which helps a lot because these characters have dogshit recovery. Ridley’s Skewer admittedly kinda sucks but it deals the most damage a single move can in Ultimate (it’s like 60% it’s crazy) and it also crumples which sets up a tech chase. Byleth’s Amyr has comical amounts of super armour and also essentially instantly breaks any shield it touches. I think the only big strong move you never see in Ultimate is Kirby’s Hammer Flip? Kirby’s so stubby that you’d much rather be using your advantage on an actual combo instead of some meme shit that returns you to Kirby’s godawful neutral.

They also require full meter to activate so you really need to be mindful of your meter usage if you want to finish the game with a bang. *Well besides Tager. Bowser's armoured attacks at one point we're separated into light medium, and heavy armors (with the heavy one being broken by Pikachu's up smash at 100%) and in pre patch, his fsmash was all heavy armour which made it very polarizing to deal with, but in p+ (current patch) it gets more armour as it charges starting with none, which makes it a really fun move to interact with. It's not the best move but when the opponent feels pressured, Bowser's fsmash can do them in.

Melee Falcon Punch has about one practical use I can think of, but it's very difficult to pull off and only applicable as a Rest or shield break punish (which are very rare for Falcon as well). The idea is to use the aerial FP (which has more knockback than grounded), but also to position yourself "inside" the opponent to create a DI mixup on a normal or reverse hit of the move. Since the knockback is so high, bad (or even no) DI can result in KOs at much lower %s than you could attain off fully charged F smash (highest % and KB of Falcon's kit) which doesn't have the possibility of reversing on an in place opponent. You could argue just using the same reverse hit mixup with knee or bair for possibly higher % through combo potential and more favorable positioning of your finisher, but removing the middle man with FP is a genuine option, although there are cases where it won't work such as the opponent being under a platform.

F. Riesbyfe in Melty Blood AACC has my personal favorite example of this. Her 236 special is a pile-bunker hitgrab. She lurches forwards to stab you and if it connects, she leans back as her weapon slams forwards and you get launched across the screen. Normally it's only something you want as a combo ender, because it's pretty unsafe. But if you charge the B version of the move (and it's a damn long charge), it becomes an overhead that does EX-move-level damage and just looks fucking awesome. You can use it to hard read some defensive options, such as backdash or shielding, which it just outright beats. Just generally not something you want to go for unless you know you're already in their head and want to instill the fear of god in your opponent. Best part is that it doesn't really look like an overhead either, so you get people second guessing themselves and panic blocking and then BLAM they're excessively dead. If it wasn't overhead it'd be utterly useless but as it is, it has just enough utility for mind games. It made me fall in love with the character honestly, when I first started playing all I wanted to do was land that move. Man what a sick character, shame I don't think she'll ever be in another game.

shout out to one that fits both unblockable and charging(kinda) In GGXRD Axl can hold his sparrowhawk stance for 150 FRAMES (so 2.5 seconds of just standing there) for it to become unblockable. it actually has more use than you think, as all the attacks of sparrowhawk stance go full screen opponents usually want to wait until you go out of it, so you can just stand there to become unblockable

"Fighting games have attacks in them" And Big Yellow has cool videos on KZbin. Jokes aside, another good video. If you decide to make a followup to this type of topic, Taunt Attacks (and Taunt Special Abilities) would make for a interesting topic. A couple were talked about, but there's quite a lot more that couldn't make it in, and it would be fun to talk about the occasional practicality of them.

for the "charge attacks" part, Multiversus is a GREAT example A lot of the chargeable attacks in the game gain new properties when fully charged, like harley upsmash's hitbox lingers a lot longer and multihits when fully charged, where normally it is just a fast swing

I'll probably sound dumb, but it makes sense in my head. If I could bring another genre of game into the mix, competitive puzzle games. Some puzzle games have slower "attacks" than others. The "attacks" are you building up your board and setting up a combo you can quickly do to attack or counter attack by clearing it. Building up your board is slow and takes time compared to clearing it, you could liken setting up your board to the startup of your attack. Puyo Puyo is the big one I think of. The board setup is slow, but also your attack itself is slow when you start clearing your board. While you clear your board for your attack, you can't do anything until your full chain combo is finished, and your attack doesn't actually "launch" or "connect" until your combo is finished. In that time, your opponent can set up their board for their counter attack while you're doing nothing launching your attack. This might sound like it's weird on its own, but Puyo Puyo has a "counter" system called Offset. If you are being attacked, you can launch a counter attack to soften the incoming attack, or completely reverse it to the opponent if your attack is flat out strong enough. So that's where these slow attacks and this counter system come together to make its attack and counter system. You build up these big, slow attacks that do heavy damage to each other, but counter them while these slow attacks are launching. And I think it's beautiful to see these big, slow chains doing massive damaging popping back and forth during intense matches. And, as a direct comparison, compared to something like Tetris in VS/Battle mode. Where if you do a big clear or combo in Tetris, you send the attack instantly to your opponent with no delay. Your opponent instead has to react to your board state to preemptively counter your play. The general pace of board setup is a bit faster I feel and the speed of attacks is much faster than Puyo Puyo. Hopefully it's not too confusing, but I think it's interesting to see the difference in attacking speed in a different type of competitive game. I don't know, I think it's cool.

Shoutout to NASB Toph dstrong for being the coolest slow move. F21 and has a massive blindspot, but insanely safe on block (+22), and can be used to control an entire platform. You can use it to catch techrolls on plats, and shark for teeters and grabs, and even anti air, if you get a good callout. It’s a really fun and unique move to use, and one of the best conditioning tools in the game in my own opinion

One of the slow as fuck moves that used to exist in older version of For Honor was Shugoki's hug. It was a 1000 ms move (because in FH timings are counted in ms instead of frames) that had zero tracking (it was so slow you could walk around the move) and had insane recovery on whiff. But that move had an interesting attribute: if you were in red health, it became an instakill (red health is I believe below 25 or 20% health). One of the things you had to do with Shugoki was managing armor, and when you had armor you were uninterruptible (you started with armor, lost armor on damage taken after 1 second and got it back if you avoided getting hit for like 5 seconds or something). So if you had armor, you could just eat an attack, bet that it would put you in red health and pre input a hug. It was silly, still a bad move on a terrible character back then, but I enjoyed doing Shugoki dittos and having me and my opponent do a hug duel :D

I don't play many fighting games, mostly just plat-fighters, but I still wanna share my 3 favorite big, slow moves. Ridley DSpecial (Smash Ultimate): I still can't believe that there's a move in Smash that lets you fully impale Donkey Kong and the Duck Hunt dog. On top of being incredibly satisfying to land given how small the sweetspot is, it deals absolutely ludicrous damage, AND sets up tech chases. Etalus NSpecial (Rivals of Aether): The main purpose of this move is to slam it on the ice Etalus can place on stage to grant him armor, and because of how slow it is, you usually only see players use this move after they've KO'd their opponent. However, sometimes you'll try to get some armor in a riskier situation, maybe when the opponent's offstage or when you're both on opposite ends of the stage. The opponent will naturally try to challenge you and stop you, and sometimes this results in them getting walloped into next Tuesday because Etalus gets his armor by slamming down a giant fucking ice mallet. All the power and showmanship of Warlock Punch, but with additional utility! Naturally you could also use this move while the opponent is frozen, but it's much riskier given they can roll out once the freeze ends. Sylvanos UStrong (Rivals of Aether): hehe funny disjoint go brrrrr

One good example of a charged unblockable attack that's actually quite solid is Jubei's Black Panther in BBCF. It's a scary frame trap that can be charged to become an unblockable. It even has a just frame that allows you to keep the fast version's shorter recovery while still being unblockable, letting you get full combos from it.

Level 3 4b9 (Bedman's charge move in strive at max damage) is the slow move im most used to and i love it. It's pretty rare to get it out but its 50 damage on block and leads to a more potent s/t mix because of bedbuster (grab into !H), and if you ch hit it, which is more likely then not because if someone isn't blocking it, they definitely pressed something to try to win back their turn. It does as much damage as a weak super and launches the opponent a goofy amount into the air, so you can combo out of it and get oki. OR if you have meter. You can get install and still be up to +5. With H error stocked, which most of the time is a end of round checkmate

No clue if you'll ever see this, but I've got a lot of things to say about this video: 1. That is a rad choker. it amazes me how you manage to flex how good you look every video (different attire, painted nails, the choker, the eyebrow work, etc). 2. 5:37 and 14:03 killed me. Seriously I have a cold rn and I think I might have popped a lung. 3. You are as good as Smash Bros is at making me want to try games I haven't played. First Gen 1 Pokemon and Guilty Gear! 4. If there's any big slow move I particularly like, it would probably be Brawl/Smash 4 Ganondorf's Up-Smash. It's slower than my mental speed but it's also incredibly safe due to the surprisingly very low endlag. It doesn't have too much raw utility besides maybe some up-air combos at early percentages, but it's safer than a motorcycle helmet (essentially since most players don't have the balls to challenge it).

Really love your videos like this, talking about random subjects that you find cool. Focus attacks are definitely one of my favorites considering the fact they have armor and can be dash cancelled adds a whole different sort of mind games. It's kinda funny to put your opponent in this situation that is much more urgent than simply switching from crouching to standing. Yeah they can try to hit you but what if you release earlier and then get the level 2 ? It's gonna be the same for your opponent since either way gives you a crumple if the opponent wasn't blocking.

Hello did you say inject Bedman into every discussion ok got it One of my favorite slow moves is Bedman's Task A'. The reason why is because it's such a simple yet effective flip on a very standard concept. At first, Task A' just seems like a slower version of Task A, but as soon as it hits the opponent, you are teleported right in front of the opponent at great frame advantage. This allows you to combo if it hits, or start a blockstring if it's blocked. The reason I love it so much is because of you don't know about it, it's a genuine shock to get hit by. You might just sit there, waiting for what seems to just be a slower version of Task A to come over so you can block it, but then... Bedman has just appeared in front of you, and he begins schmixing you as he usually does. It's almost like a pseudo-jumpscare! It doesn't even stop there! By replaying the move with the Deja-Vu seals, it becomes one of Bedman's best ways of getting his most stylish combos and setups! I can't do em, but they're fuckin AWESOME. Thank you for listening to the insane ramblings of this local ADHD autism hyper-fixated girl who is incredibly bisexual for this twitlonger spouting terminally ill Carl Clover lookin ass twink

@ioncavegrandma92562 жыл бұрын
He isn't really an ultimate player. Also while the move is slow it isn't much of a commitment as you can cancel the first 70 or so frames into shield if it won't hit or if you want to use it as a mixup/movement tool with b-reverse. The sephiroths I play against typically use it as "the move i use when i break their shield or they are recovering" because sephiroth generally struggles to edgeguard otherwise.

my favorite slow attack is Ridley's down b in ultimate. the move is slow enough to be reactable, but is still fast enough to catch most things as a read with enormous damage and a guaranteed tech chase. where the move truly shines is platform tech chases, since you have a 1/3 chance of deleting the opponent's stock, and even solely based off damage it does more than 3 up smashes which cover the entire platform and will always be able to do so after a skewer
