I have been studying Chinese for more than ten years. This series probably has the most useful and helpful videos I have seen. If I could have seen these videos ten years ago, my Chinese would have improved much faster. Again, these videos are great. The only thing I would prefer to be different is if the English translations were a little more direct. For example, in this video "jixu shuijiao" 继续睡觉 is translated to "go back to bed". The direct translation is “continue to sleep".

Steve D good suggestions!
@allmendoubt47846 жыл бұрын
去睡觉 means go to bed to sleep, as opposed to 去上床 which means get into bed. There are few direct translations to rely on. Phrases hold the key meanings, not direct vocab, and Chinese is less exact than English, its a cultural thing, continue v return.... I see your point entirely. If you're interested in classes in China with some side work I could put you in touch...

Hi, great stories / lessons on this channel. What level of HSK do they approximately correspond to? Thanks
@immersivechinese4 жыл бұрын
Maybe HSK 3/4? I'm not a big fan of HSK so I don't really pay any attention to it.

Hello! Thank you for such helpful videos, I love these! I am wondering wǒ méi tīngjiàn - is the “jiàn” a complement like gěi, wán and dào? And what verbs is it used with? 😃🤔
@immersivechinese4 жыл бұрын
Yes, jiàn (见/見) is a compliment, but not a general purpose one. Basically it can only be used with kàn and tīng. It seems weird that sound can be "seen", but tīngjiàn probably developed as a natural pair with the more logical kànjiàn.

if we download every chinese news / movie on youtube channel and then using software to make it slower ? will it work ?
@immersivechinese5 жыл бұрын
No, it will sound robotic and weird. That's why I use separate recordings for normal and slow in both the videos and the app.
@uchang45224 жыл бұрын

@johnroekoek123456 жыл бұрын
Very, very good. I also like to repeat the combinations you say like da4 jia1 hao3. As a Western I can memorize those tones and don't have to remember them separately, cause these tones are unnatural for us. This because we have to block our own tones in which we express our emotions.

These are amazing! But I have so many questions about grammar that completely contradict all the other grammar I have learned. Could someone fluent in both Mandarin and English or have a high level of Mandarin help me?
@immersivechinese5 жыл бұрын
Sure, what questions do you have?
@sabrina31385 жыл бұрын
First one: zai zuihou yitian buguan zenmeyang, wo bu neng zai chidao What is the use of " zai4 " in the sentence? Is it for again? Second one: ruguo, yige yue chidao wu ci yishang jiu fa ni yitian de gongzi. Why is the subject not in this sentence? Is it because it was mentioned before. Also, why is this sentence structured so weirdly? I have studied the structure of basic sentences like with Time, Manner, Time duration and stuff. In a sentence of Subject, time when, manner, location, instrument, target, verb phrase, time duration (this is in order of the actual structure), where would the number of times the verb is done fit into this. 抱歉, 我没有个老师。I have to study on my own, so the questions end up building up. I have more questions for later!😂

1. Yes, here zài (再) means "again". Zài is a pretty complex word actually and doesn't always correspond to "again" in English, although in this particular case it does. A similar example would be "bú yào zài zuò" (不要再做, don't do it again). I have an app by the way (called "Immersive Chinese") which covers 再 and 又 extensively in lesson 52, you might find it helpful. 2. As for the second one, it's a standard 如果...就 structure, similar to “rúguǒ nǐ qù, wǒ jiù bú qù le" (如果你去,我就不去了, if you go, then I won't go). As you identified, the example in the story is missing a subject. Chinese is a "pro-drop" language, meaning the subject is often dropped where context allows. The full sentence without any dropping would look like: 如果(你)一个月迟到五次以上,(公司)就会罚你一天的工资 (if in one month you are late five times or more, then the company will fine you a day's wages). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro-drop_language Regards the rest of the sentence, I'm not sure specifically which parts you find confusing. The first part, "yí gè yuè chídào wǔ cì yǐshàng" (一个月迟到五次以上) is normal, similar to yì tiān chī sān dùn fàn" (一天吃三顿饭, eat three meals a day) or yí gè xīngqī shàng wǔ cì kè (一个星期上五次课, have five classes a week). As general advice, I would say it isn't a good idea to analyse Chinese sentences too closely from a grammatical perspective. Applying the logic of European languages to Chinese will drive you mad! It's best just to expose yourself to as much of the language as possible and mimic what you hear, rather than trying to form sentences according to a formula.

Yes, "no matter what", "regardless". "in any case", something like that.
