thanks luccas, thats what i thought :) im a physicist student myself by the way, so i am well known with the concept of waves etcetera. i was just wondering if the concept of lightning would be any different; the conditions are a lot more extreme. duivel114: yes youre right, the water molecules just pass on the movement to each other and almost stay in the same place (however, they start making a circular movement). oh, im from holland too by the way ;)

The air is HIGHLY resistant though. So much so that a static-electricity spark from your hand to a door knob is 35,000 volts, but very little amperage. So no, those lightning bolts are not traveling at "the speed of light" or anywhere near it.

actually no, because in the video you are not watching how fast the light moves you are wathing the electricity in it's path move. the light that you see is the instant it happens, you are not looking at a light beam shooting you watching lighting strike.

many ppl think that electrons in wires move with the speed of light, since u can send data through it really fast, similar to the speed of light. the thing is, in wires electrons move only a few centimeters per second (!). im wondering how fast electrons move in lightning though, anyone got an estimation? only answer when u know what ure talking about, please :)

OK who ever disputes the fact this video is fake is INSANE! In a mature thunderstorm the top of the anvil is all Ice,hail, and snow, which all have a positive charge while the base of the storm(rain drops) have a negative charge. the updraft blows all this matter around in the middle of the storm creating lightning. ALSO negative stepped leaders from the base of the storm travel down and cause positive "streamers" to rise and which ever one it connects to first creates the strike.

Lightning isn't an object to be seen. We only see lightning when it superheats the atmosphere. It has nothing to do with the speed at which it travels. And to be honest, lightning doesn't travel. There is, however, a charge that flows through the atmosphere at a speed of roughly 93,000. Light travels at 670,616,629 miles per hour. Do people ever bother looking things up when they post these things? Or do they just assume that because they learned it in elementary school that it must be correct?
@ChrisLesmerises
@ChrisLesmerises 16 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the emit you speak of does not form a single tracer from points A and C to point B (A ia cloud, C is ground tracer, and B is the point at which they meet.) The light travels from point A and point C towards point B linearly at the speed in which the electricity heats the surround air to a bright white emission of light. Basically the source of the light grows at a "slow" speed compared to the speed the electrons are flowing at. :D

@Enriquehack You have obviously never seen big lightning crawlers traveling large distances in the sky which can easily be seen moving by the naked eye, it's the same thing shown here but these bolts are only traveling short distances so to the naked eye it looks like 1 big instant light path which it is not.
@BerryTheBnnuy
@BerryTheBnnuy 16 жыл бұрын
Dada, electrons don't actually move very fast at all in either wires or the sky. They bump the electrons in the neighboring atoms. It's a wave, not a flow. Think of it like sound. The air molecules don't carry the sound, they just vibrate to the sound wave. Same sort of thing happens with electricity with whatever its conducting through.
@ChrisLesmerises
@ChrisLesmerises 16 жыл бұрын
You're not seeing the electricity, which does start from tracers in the ground that reach out toward the sky. You're seeing the heat spent as the highly charged clouds send their charge into the ground. Remember electricity is invisible, and light you see from electricity comes from the charging or overheating of particles in the path of the electricity.
@ISamuelII
@ISamuelII 14 жыл бұрын
"not watching how fast the light moves you are wathing the electricity in it's path move. " I was taught the electron path moves from the ground up in G2C strikes and the flash is made after contact is grounded. Some of these look like falling spliting objects burning up but we know better.
@Fizzo20
@Fizzo20 16 жыл бұрын
Lightning does travel from the ground up, at 0:16 you see it come from the sky... it starts out coming from the sky but when you see the bright flash, after that is when the lightning goes back up from the ground. The naked human eye can only capture it going from the ground up.
@BerryTheBnnuy
@BerryTheBnnuy 16 жыл бұрын
It can, but it's extremely rare for it to climb from the ground to the sky. EXTREMELY rare. This is one of those "the sky is blue because it reflects the ocean" kind of things. Complete and total bullshit but people spread it anyway.
@ChrisLesmerises

Lightning does not travel at the speed of light my friend. Electricity travels at a speed much slower, that is slowed even more by the conductivity (or lack there of) of the medium through which it is traveling.

@Gyrorobot So, the speed of light is roughly 2600x faster than lightning?
@emzirek
@emzirek 15 жыл бұрын
Even at this speed it's difficult to see. The way lightning works is all those "feelers" reaching out, try to "connect" with another body(cloud, earth, plane) to discharge extra energy. The cloud is negatively charged and sends out these "feelers" and the positively charged body "releases" electrons by sending out "feelers, too. The path where the "feelers are closest to touching is the path of least resistance and all energy(mostly) goes that path to ground out. Basically going up to the cloud.

@poopsyproductions 15 жыл бұрын
Yeah i've seen you spread this comment all over the place. You want to sound smart, but you left out a lot. Point is, lightning can go from the ground up, hardly ever. It can go from cloud-cloud, cloud-ground, ground-cloud. So, there's also there is different types, heat lightning, that's when it's too far away to be heard. Sheet lightning is the cloud-cloud lightning. Staccato is when it has all these branches. Most strikes are negative. A return stroke is simply the second, or third flash

Dear hexdrill... i'm not sure it is need to answer your questions, but i think you are not going to check if somebody have ansvered...but if i'm wrong here You are.... firstly the lighting doesn't hit the ground, it is weird but, from the sky, and from the earth two lightings appears and go throught each other. This sky one is much longer. While they meet the sound is released by the air warmed, and cooled back abruptly.
@robotichivemind
@robotichivemind 15 жыл бұрын
lightning can do either. Lightning results in atmospheric pressure differences causing an imbalance in charge between the earth and the cloud cover. Depending on which side of the sky-ground equation has the higher charge that's where the lightning strike will "originate" from. That's why you can have cloud-to-cloud strikes. If one "section" of cloud has a greater difference in charge from another "section" that's where the strike will happen. So there you go.
@koimaxx
@koimaxx 16 жыл бұрын
actually there are several types of lightning... one of the most common is whats called cloud-to-ground lightning where the lead stroke originates from the cloud towards the ground. the clip is an example of it. i guess what youre referring would be the return stroke of the lightning coming from the ground up which is the very short but very bright flashes also seen in this clip. hope ive made it relatively clear. peace
@DiogoMST
@DiogoMST 16 жыл бұрын
hum... i heard that lightning happens when 2 strikes collide. I mean, part of the lightning comes from the clouds, and the other part comes from the ground. If it happens that they get together, then a lightning is formed. Truly we just see the downward lightning, but perhaps that doesn't mean it's fake. And it's possible to have more than one strike per second. Unlikely, but can happen.
@Gyrorobot
@Gyrorobot 14 жыл бұрын
@enriquehack - just so you know lighting itself does not travel at the speed of light. light = about 186,000 mps (miles per second). where as lighting = is about 260,000 mph (72 mps)....... Lightning creates light but is an exchange of energy and is, therefore subject to friction so it does not travel the speed of light.
@Avezyyy
@Avezyyy 15 жыл бұрын
mmm noooo? conventional current flows from positive to negative (i.e. ground-up) however real current (consisting of free electrons) flows from negative to positive (cloud to ground). The opposite is the case for positive lightning (not shown in this video). At least this is what i get taught in physics classes...
@Audi2000t
@Audi2000t 15 жыл бұрын
to all those who say lightining comes from the sky you are absolutely wrong.... it is in fact that electricity which is lightining comes from the ground up.. yes im an electrician. its called electron flow... negative charge actually flows to positive, but we are taught the conventional flow which is positive to negative

That's pretty damn good! Excellent vid! However, I remember reading somewhere that lightning actually travels upwards from the ground to the clouds and it's supposed to be an optical illusion which makes us think it's the other way round. Certainly looks like it's going downwards in this vid. Now I don't know what to think!!
@SlavaVB
@SlavaVB 16 жыл бұрын
seems like the charges in the clouds are forced down as they ionize air while repelling from each other and the winner creates the most permeable electric field path and all the others back track or jump across to the main stream and bond from the high current magnetic field that pulls them together and fights the electric field repulsion
@NateMcL

@Kunnonkansalainen Buddy. This video is in slow motion. Lightning takes place in a split second. In order for the lightning to be show this slow, the video has to be slowed down immensely. Since the video is so slow, the clouds will not appear to be moving. Now shut up, and go to school or something.
@Ranma1981
@Ranma1981 14 жыл бұрын
@brainbug1643187942 From what I know from science class....when the charge is attracted to the ground it moves down to earth, following different paths of lowest resistance until it finds the ground and now a full electrical path is created and the electrical energy is pulled quickly to the ground.
@MrSquirrels

Just because you can change the battery in your car doesn't mean you're an electrician. "Bolts from the blue" are positive to negative charge lightning strikes, and are anvil-to-ground. So saying lightning doesn't come from the sky makes you wrong... partially.

Havent any of you heard of google or wikipedia ? LOL Look it up, there are different kinds of lightening, some dont even touch the ground at all! So quit your squabbling over it! Geez..... I think this video looks real, I dont know why all of you are saying it isnt...
@boonw
@boonw 15 жыл бұрын
Just to help some people understand, the initial crackling you hear when lighting strikes is the electricity spreading out trying to find the ground. When one of branches touches the ground, the charges race back to the column which that branch was in and rush into the ground causing the big flash.

@callmm
@callmm 15 жыл бұрын
sorry but you're wrong. lightning can come from the sky, from the ground or meet in the middle. this is because the cloud can be either negatively charged or positively charged depending on the alignment of electrons in the cloud.

A clever way to prevent a lightning strike would be to hold a very long metal pole up to the cloud to conduct the electricity down to earth but of course you wouldn't get such a spectacular display.
