Im wondering if the assist hooks on the bottom are necessary...? If the assist hook sticks in the collor of the fish its harder to reel up its more like dragging the fish to the surface. 1st year using this method so im grateful for all the advice. Thanks for the video!

Not really. They are called verticals jigs because you need to be directly up and down from the lure on a boat. The jig “flutters” down as it drops like an injured bait fish
