In this short seminar, I go over the major differences between Slow Pitch Jigging and Vertical Jigging. Showcasing that even though both tactics are jigging, they are 2 completely different styles. I cover and explain the basic concepts of the methods, the gear used, the rigging, the jigs and finally the species of fish you'll be targeting. Then I take you out on the water for some hands-on action, putting you in the driver's seat, giving some great examples of both styles of deep sea fishing jigging. All this information paints a dynamic picture of 2 similar styles of fishing, that couldn't be any more different. Thinking about getting into jigging, and want to learn some basics about the most popular styles, or maybe your a seasoned salty soldier looking for a way to explain these differences simply... Then this episode's definitely for you.
Enjoy ;)
Tight lines & good vibes.

This was a great 1 Heath , I'll have to try both when I get to the salty environment. Just got myself a sailboat , hopefully it doesn't drift too fast for the slow pitch action. Leaders in the saltwater fishing is heavier than the main line , I guess it'll make it easier to hoist the catch into the boat. In freshwater fishing it's usually the opposite , a lighter leader than the main line so if you loose your catch you'll only loose a small section. Hopefully my boat will make it south soon , so I'll get into the bite with some of them toothy critters :) Maybe we'll meet on the water some day Heath , would be nice to get some lessons from the master :)

Thanks a million for watching leaving some great feedback and sharing your story. I think you'll be just fine drifting in your sailboat and doing some slow pitch. That's all I do is drift and if my line goes too far out telescoping I just reel it up and reset. You are correct about the leaders when it comes to the difference between rigging up for saltwater and rigging up for freshwater. No leader is not really meant for hoisting the fish onto the boat if you get a bigger fish you want to consider a net or a gaff. The heavier leader is meant to prevent cut-offs and chafing from the fish's teeth. Good luck in your fishing journeys and on your adventures into the South. Hi Heath, I really need to try slow pitch jigging. Hopefully I get to try it next summer when I go back to NJ for a visit. I have a spinning rod that has a good parabolic bend with 20 lb braid. That should get me started. Unfortunately, we don't have the variety of fish up here that you have in FL. Thank you for taking me fishing with you and explaining the two different types of jigging. Hope your family is well and say "Hi" to the Fish Slayer and the Fishing Girls. Take care and good luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey thanks for watching. That setup you have with the spinning rod and the braid sounds like a great startup kit. Regardless of the variety of species you have getting into the hookup is always fun and it never grows old. I really do hope you get a chance to get out and experience getting into the bite with this method. Thanks again for always being here and making my day better. Love to hear from you and see your message in the feedback section. All the kids say "Hi Mickey". Hope all is well with you and your family I know winter is coming so stay warm. Thank you very much Captain Heath. Question... Should you use 4 strand or 8 strand braid for Vertical Jigging? Does the braid profile change over continual use due to the strain and stresses on the line? Thank you very much for your response.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Жыл бұрын
Either type is good, 4 strand is thinner and made for going deeper.. braid has a very resilient life span, as long as it doesn't get nicked your be fine for a very long time, no use does not affect it.

Awesome! Thank you for very informative and detailed video! Question for you: I noticed you are using spinning reel with left hand retreat when vertical jigging but right retreat on slow pitch reel. Why is that? I see a lots of people do the same. I'm so used to spinning with left hand and every time I go trolling for salmon or jigging for halibut I struggle switching hands with conventional reels. Am I the only one? Thanks!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Жыл бұрын
No you're not alone. Most folks have trouble with adjusting to the left handed spinner. For me personally I'm not sure, never really thought about it, I am just able to switch it up without any trouble. Funny this is, a right handed spinner is what gives me trouble.

@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your support of the channel I truly appreciate it. The conventional reel is on my slow pitch rod, which is a spiral wrapped rod. Meaning the guides are wrapped in a counter clockwise fashion from top to bottom, from the base to the tip of the rod. These rods are made for conventional reels so the line never touches the rod. My vertical high speed spinner is on a standard spinning rod that has jigging capabilities. The guides on this rod are set in an inline fashion.

Thank you so much for your videos. Wife and I are moving to West Palm Beach area from Texas and we can't wait to get the boat out on the water of off Jupiter inlet. Honest question here. Would we be able to just use braid line and use slow pitch jigs with my current medium to heavy action spinning rods with any success? Or does it have to absolutely be a slow pitch rod? Thank you! Maybe we could all go fishing some day?!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. You will be just fine using your current setups just use about a 20 ft or so monofilament leader of about 40 lb test. Remember the important part of slow jigging is not too reel on the fall. If you follow that important part of the method and technique you should be just fine with what you have. Hope this helps. Heath are the hook at the top of the jig for vertical jigging? That would mean the fishes mouth is always against the leader? It looked like the hooks on the fish you caught vertical jigging were attached to the bottom when lifted the fish out of the water.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Жыл бұрын
Vertical jigging you typically have a single hook at the top, yes sometimes the fish bites through the leader, but you can switch it up and out the hook on the bottom. Slow pitch you have 4 hooks, 2 on top and 2 on bottom

Can slow pitch jigging be done effectively on shallow water like 80 feet?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes you can effectively slow pitch dig in shower water. You will just have to use a lighter jig like 100 g or 75 g. At the same time you have to watch what rod you're using as they are weighted and effectiveness towards the gram size jig you would be using. For instance you wouldn't want to use a rod that's waited for $200 to 500 gigs on a lighter jig like that it won't react properly. You would need a ride probably designed for jigs as light as 50 g up to about 300 g. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it.
