2024 Duramax oil filter, what's it take?

It's time for the first oil change on the 2024 Denali Ultimate 3500 HD. I also answer some questions from the last walk under video.

My 2023 3500 HD Silverado Duramax also came with the PF63. I did the first oil change at the recommended 5000 miles. Big mistake. The oil was excessively dirty. I also run a FS2500 by-pass oil filter I installed at 50 miles. I changed it's filter at the same time. I normally change the factory oil at 1000 miles, but this time I went what was recommended by the dealer and GM. Never again. I plan on changing the oil and both filters again at 10,000 miles to make sure I got all the nasty's out. I also sent in an oil sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis. Waiting for the results from the 5000 mile sample.

Except when new from the bottle, diesel oil is always black.

I didn't know that would take that much oil. Most of the things I do to my truck are not necessary, but well worth it...that's 1/2 the fun!

The plug on the transmission is used for setting fluid level. It has a stand pipe inside pan.

The cooler is present on my 2023. It’s also one of the reasons GM switched to the PF63 over the 26. Both fit though and both are fine to use. I’ve switched back and forth a few times, no issue.

Initially they used a pf26 then they decided it had better cold filtering with the pf63.

Would the diff fluid be too thick to use a vacuum pump to get it out? I’m sure putting a tap in your diff housing would immediately void the warranty.

Just did mine and the filter from factory actually had wrote on it to replace with the PF63. Course I put a WIX on it.

My 2024 high country dually gets maybe 14 at best with no gooseneck , with any trailer I’m topping at around 11.5 which ain’t bad

Have you done anything to deal with rust on the underside of the truck? Starting my research - sounds like the wax GM uses may complicate things.

I’ve owned three duramax trucks and generally keep them 5-10 years. Looking at 24s and I’m at loss. Smaller oil filter, no more external trans filter, and no drain plugs on either differential. I’m going to look at f350s for the first time.

I've cut them open, and they are well built. It's interesting that it's the same filter the 6.2 L gas motors take. Filter is 30% smaller than previous Duramax filters.

The drain is the cover, what is the problem? Its not like you are doing it every 5000 miles.

On my 6th new DMax. 2024 AT4. Fuel mileage is not near as good as previous trucks. Maybe because they jacked the hp or hyped up the computer for 24’s. Not that I care that much about mileage - just noticed a difference.

yep. 150-2oo miles less on tank of fuel vs my old one

The Ultimate only comes with the Duramax! It's a really good engine, I'm loving it!

Check the cat filter! The cat filter don’t have the back flow preventer! That allows all the oil to drain back to pan

The exact same thing happened with my 2024 GMC Denali ultimate. Came with the PF63 and dealer replaced with a PF26 during my first oil change visit. I will be replacing that filter myself with the same PF63 which the factory had installed on my truck. Any information on the main difference between these 2 filters and which one is better?

Agreed, this info would be great. Someone please cut them open and inspect. My 24 AT4 Dmax is due to arrive in a month or so, cant wait 👍

One thing I have noticed that nobody else has touched is that the pf63 filter has more cutout oil flow holes compared to the replacement filter which the dealership installed. Hope that helps. The owners manual also shows PF63 is the preferred filter. Page 60

@@rsbreeze I have not been able to get more than 3k oil life out of my new GMC 2500 Denali Ultimate. 1st oil change at 3k and oil life was at 8%, I’m at 4800 miles now and it’s at 50% now. It’s crazy, I assumed I could do 7k miles before an oil change. I don’t tow or idle, just normal easy driving.
