Hello Karina! I love you and your videos soo much. You have helped me so much only if you really knew the struggle lol. I recently just graduated in December with my bachelors in speech and I am trying to become a SLPA here in NC now, and the process is very overwhelming, but thanks to you I am managing lol. Luckily, I was offered a job position already but the licensing and registration process is really confusing and I am just trying my hardest to be thorough as possible. Thank you for such great and helpful content. You really are making a difference❤

I know in my town's school district they'll hire slpa's who are in the process of obtaining a license, but they give you a certain amount of time to finish. I thought that was pretty cool, since it is difficult to get clinical hours.

Hey just recently subscribed to your channel ❤ it. Especially because I am also a mom and my situation is a little different. I want to go back to school for SLPA, so wanted to see how the schooling is and if I can still work and have some family time? My program where I live is 2 years with 2 classes a term. What are your thoughts if you don’t mind responding. Thank you!
@KarinaKurlz Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think that sounds very doable! 2 classes seems manageable, and will give you the time you may need to really understand the material while learning and having time for other things. It's all about balance, of course, but I recommend getting any experience you can while also taking classes. It helps a lot in understanding/practicing the material and to have a better understanding of what you'll be doing once you do become an SLPA

I'm confused. How do you apply for SLPA license without having the necessary fieldwork completed? Don't you need to complete the hours first in order to get your license? I live in CA and it states that I need 100 hours for fieldwork. I will be attending a SLPA Associate degree program. but the school doesn't offer help finding placement for fieldwork, so im on my own. My biggest worry is not being able to get the fieldwork hours completed.

Hi Karina, congrats on getting your license it sure is an accomplishment. I’m working on getting my slpa license with asha at the moment and was wondering if you could give me any tips in regards to getting my clinical hours. TYSM
@KarinaKurlz2 жыл бұрын
Hi! For clinical hours I suggest you reach out to potential job settings and let them know you’re working on getting your license. If that doesn’t work you can still apply for your license in your state, but with the condition that upon being hired, you complete those clinical hours. I hope this helps you!

@KarinaKurlz2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can definitely still become an SLPA or even an SLP by completing the prerequisites. In order to work you’ll need an SLPA license, so 1st step will be to see what schools by you offer a degree in that. You’ll likely be able to complete the prerequisites fairly quickly with a degree in something different! :)

Im currently attending an online college with my current major being Associates in Health service. Im moving back home to Oklahoma in 2023, am I wasting my time with pursuing this degree in Health service? Should I be thinking about transferring to an actual online school that offers an undergraduate degree in SLP?
@KarinaKurlz3 жыл бұрын
This is difficult to answer because I’m not sure what your goals are! I would imagine that a health service degree is more broad and can land you a job in a lot of places, whereas an SLPA program has its own challenges when trying to get hired. Each has its own prerequisites and/or hours to be met, and the work settings may be different as well.

@KarinaKurlz3 жыл бұрын
I believe you have to go through the same process for a license in TX. If you already have some of the requirements, such as the observation & clinical hours, I recommend just providing proof when submitting the application!
@nicolehughes53733 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video! There is very little info about the SLPA route. If you didn’t mind me asking, what made you choose SLPA over SLP? I’m nearing the end of my undergraduate career and am leaning towards SLPA.

Hi! That’s great and super exciting! I took what’s called a jurisprudence exam, and that was completely online. I remember it being pretty short and very much about general information as an SLPA and the laws in Texas. It’s a no fail type of exam, so nothing to worry about!

Hi! So if we have all the pre-req courses we apply for the license to start the clinical hours? Or where can we go to get the clinical hours?
@KarinaKurlz2 жыл бұрын
Hi! For a license in Texas you’ll have to find the clinical hours on your own, and that’s usually the hardest part. The hours can be completed at your college/university if it’s offered. If you’ve completed all the other requirements and are still needing the clinical hours, you’re required to submit a clinical deficiency plan form which is explained in the SLPA application. Hope this helps!

You don’t necessarily have to be an SLPA. If you want to work while in graduate school, being an SLPA is a good option to gain experience, but it isn’t something that you have to do. I have friends that were never SLPAs. Those friends completed their graduate degree and are now working as SLPs.

I graduated in end of July and moved from CA to Austin and have been having the most difficult time finding an SLP that will help supervise me for the 25 clinical assisting hours!!! It's so so frustrating! 😭😭 I've been turned down like 5+ times. I just want to rip my hair out! I called and emailed UTA about the SLPA program (that helps you get the hours you need) a couple months ago and the first time no one answered, second time someone answered and they even asked around the office and no one knew what I was talking about. It was the right number and everything. 😅😓😭 It's so devastating
@KarinaKurlz3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard! I’ve known people that have been stuck at this exact step and unfortunately move onto another career. I’ve also known friends that reach out to places and have luck! The best advice I can give is to keep on trying!! Look into private clinics, home health, every setting possible. Have you tried Preston Wood Pediatrics? I know they have SLPAs that work for them. And if you reached out to UTA, it’s in the Dalila area.
