Hi!! Follow me about my day as the school year comes to a close. I show you what an average day of a speech-language pathology assistant looks like in the school setting. Very busy, lots of things to do, and I give an insight on what I love and what I’ve had a difficult time with in the school setting. Enjoy! :)

This inspired me. I worked as a home health SLPA for nearly two years or so. I had to walk away last year due to some severe health issues. You have reminded me the joy I found in this job field and have inspired me to try and get back out there! Thank you for this awesome video!

I had the hardest time making a decision between OT and SLP. After some thought, I decided SLP. I decided to start watching your videos to get a better idea of what they do, and after watching this, I feel confident now in knowing that I made the right choice. Thank you for sharing what you do, and may I say, you’re excellent at what you do! I hope when I start working, I’m atleast half as good as you are.

OMG I can't believe I found a channel like this. I love your energy and enthusiasm with the kiddos! I am also new to the field worked in a clinic setting for a couple months but decided to give a school setting a try which I will be starting this upcoming week. Any tips for new school setting SLPA, for what to do the first week, scheduling, collab with teachers and fun activities that are your go to?

Since then I’ve just been working a regular job, and just recently got accepted into a SLPA program! I begin fieldwork hours tomorrow and am so nervous!!! I don’t have any experience whatsoever and the last time I experienced and learned any speech related things was back in undergrad 3 years ago. Any tips?? 😩

@KarinaKurlz
@KarinaKurlz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you! :) My school district actually didn’t offer training in regards to speech therapy. I received training on general guidelines and responsibilities, but in early intervention I received weeks of training. So it varies depending on the setting! I do work under an SLP, but I don’t work alongside the SLP. The direct therapy with the kids is provided by me, and the SLP is required to observe directly and indirectly for a certain number of hours.

Hi Emily! I suggest you really research what schools offer this program, because some schools may be flexible and offer it online, which may be the better option. After having a baby myself, I do think school would be difficult but not impossible!!

Hi I have a question. I’m looking into getting into this career field and I’ve been looking at jobs that says that you need a bachelors degree is that true or can I just get my SPLA certificate from a university.
@KarinaKurlz
@KarinaKurlz 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what setting you’d like to work in! I personally have my bachelors, and it helps for those cases where the job requires it. There’s also a lot of jobs that require at least 2 years, so a certificate will get you the job, but I guess the bachelors degree opens more options.

It comes with practice! My first year I set up index cards with the students’ name and their goals in front of them so I could get familiar with their goals. I also prep their data sheets immediately at the start of the session so it’s all in front of me while they begin any activity.

Hi I am a high school senior currently so I am not familiar with a lot about this, but I was wondering does every slp start as an slpa or is this a different job chosen seperatley and how diffucult is the schooling for you or on a broad spectrum?
@KarinaKurlz
@KarinaKurlz 2 жыл бұрын
Not every SLP has to start off as an SLP-assistant. You can choose to get a bachelors degree and go straight to a masters degree, choose to work as an SLPA for experience, or just stay as an SLPA with a bachelors degree. School for me, personally, was a little difficult for a variety of reasons. I had to re-take specific courses both related and not related to my major.

Do Assistants have to be supervised? Or do they work independently
@KarinaKurlz
@KarinaKurlz 2 жыл бұрын
You have to be supervised by an SLP to obtain a license, however the setting you choose will likely allow you to work on your own. You still have to meet supervising hours every week!

@KarinaKurlz
@KarinaKurlz 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the setting! Working in a school setting requires you to provide services by minutes based on a student’s IEP. So depending on the number of kids you see per day/ the number of schools you’re assigned to, it’s typically 7:30 am-3:30 pm
