I was a little sceptical but gave it a try. I’ve been rather shocked to average 100+ trapped slugs a night in a small 500g butter tub. Slugs decimated my sunflowers, and this was a desperation move to save the runt of my seedings . So far it is outgrowing the damage the few not attracted to the trap are doing, and the are signs that the skeletons of a coupling the other chewed up sunflowers might be trying to recover. Thanks! :)

Thank you for the scientific based research. I bought the traps and use beer. I have seen videos of using yeast mix but too much work. So now I am running a pub for slugs and slugs for worms. I reuse the beer, no not for drinking, for the slugs.

I have used both pellets and beer,but with an open container,when it rained,I had to replace the beer,but this is an excellent idea,use a plastic container which I already have.Thank you for posting this video.👍

In the "for what it's worth" department, I saw a time lapse video where a university tested beer traps. It was eye opening. Yes, you may catch and drown a few slugs, but easily three times as many came, drank and left.

I was wondering that. So how do you make them fall in?

Years ago when I lived in Vancouver, WA I had a big slug problem. Tried the beer solution and it worked great, until it didn't. I found out my cat was drinking all the beer so there wasn't any left for the slugs. Oh well. I guess my mistake was using a saucer without a lid.

I tried this once. I smeared the inside of the tub with butter or cooking oil, above the beer line. I was told that this prevents them from climbing out again after they've drunk the beer.

Here's a tip to save yourself some beer...use yeast and plain old water instead! It's the yeast that attracts them! Cheers🍺

Then instead of beer, try 1 cup water mixed with 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp flour and 1/2 tsp yeast. It should work as well as beer.

@@waltp3373 That's a great idea! I did buy slug pellets and tested it v. beer, and I guess my beer was no good because the slugs all went into the pellet container! Oh well, more beer for me then I guess.

You can't see how slug pellets work. The slugs usually go underground to die. I even saw one 'blue' slug in the soil still apparently healthy, so the poison seems to be slow-acting.
@AndrewTheFrank3 жыл бұрын
I found the same problem with the pellets. Swapped to using beer and was throwing out dozens of slugs a day.

Yes this method is so powerful. I just drain the slugs out and recycle the "beer" inside. The only drawback is that I need to clean it every second day because it catches so much slugs.

This isn't a fair comparison, the pellets don't kill the slugs right away like the beer, the pellets immediately stop the slugs from eating then a few days later kills them, the beer drowns them right away, so technically the pellets are better, less clean up, but the beer is faster

Maybe you can put the baits with starch somewhere else away from the garden. Maybe this will attract slugs elsewhere without killing them
