It's a slugfest! This is the first of many videos testing out different slugs in multiple airguns. In this episode, Travis tests out three different H&N slugs in 7 different airguns: 5 PCPs and 2 break barrels. All of these are under $1000 and most of them are much less than that, so now we have a better idea of how slugs perform in guns that aren't extremely expensive, guns that most of us have and shoot.

Apparently you missed the point about the whole idea of slugs they're more aerodynamic therefore they carry more energy down range so the very informative part is not they left us not knowing how much the energy was at muzzle and how much the energy was when it reached the target so how percentage-wise was lost verses what's lost with the a Diablo pellet that's what the whole deal of slugs is about and they failed to give us that information

Excellent! So many of us have been waiting for this for so long now!For those of us in America and other countries that can have fac rifles, slugs are the only way to go! They are humane, accurate, and most of all deadly! They are so far superior to a pellet in every way that, except for the price, there is not even a reason to use pellets any longer here in America. Yes, there is the issue of a situation where someone wants "limited penetration" or "limited flight time", but other than that, let's find out what EVERY RIFLE will do with slugs or hybrid slugs!!

@EDCandLace
@EDCandLace 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it will shoot lighter .217 slugs... .218 depending on your barrel and slug weight could cause you to have a stuck projectile. Try .217s first, 16 to 19g slug... Go to Ebay and there AVS, Griffin slugs are fantastic and they have some very light slugs... NSA makes some .217 17.5g slugs that would be worth a try. The thing is that you won't be pushing them very fast and the barrel has a low twist rate meaning the shorter the slug the better stability you will have. There's two ways to get a slug stable that's that's with a faster twist rate barrel or with speed (the faster it's pushed the faster it will spin in a given twist rate) . with break barrels you can't increase twist rate of course and you can't adjust power so that means the slug has to be short and light or you will have poor stability and accuracy. My TX200 MkIII .22 really loves Griffin deep hollow base .217 16 grain and shocked me at how well it shoots them but that is the ONLY slug it will shoot worth of darn. When i say it loves them i mean at 50y it's pellet of choice is JSB 15.89s (at 16.8ftlbs) and if i do my part it will put 10 in 1 to 1.25 inch all day long... The Griffin 16g will shoot under an inch at 50y ten shot groups consistently totally unbelievable that a spring gun is capable or sub inch at 50y ten shot groups with slugs... They out shoot the pellets consistently. Now they fall apart and start to group pretty wildly at around 80y and you will see tumbling by 90y... To give you an idea at 50y ten shot groups run a inch consistently at 75y ten shot groups will be 3 inches and by a 100 it's all over the place. Buy some light .217s and see, you may be shocked at the performance and i will say this... The 16g Griffin's are hell on pests even at 16ftlbs ME. That soft lead and gaping hollow cavity really opens up even at low energy levels... Want to see sparrows turn to a fluff of feathers? Push them at 950 to 1050fps from a pcp it's literally like watching a balloon filled with feathers pop and that's what it sounds like to. I would say if i was you to first try the 17.5g NSA slugs and if they shoot decently then buy a pack of the Griffin's 16s... The Griffins are much more costly then the NSA and if it's for target shooting then i would only get the NSA if they shoot well... The NSA preform well on game to BUT only at much higher energy levels then a break barrel the hollow cavity Griffin's will expand big time even at Break barrel energy levels. 400 NSA 17.5s cost 19 bucks, 100 Griffins cost 14 bucks...

Do you think the HW80 is going to like those slugs? (18 foot pound)
@EDCandLace
@EDCandLace 4 жыл бұрын
They can, we have a couple spring guns that will shoot slugs well. Our HW97KT (19.5ftlbs with JSB 18.13s) shoots a couple slugs pretty good with the best being AVS .217 20g cup base at 17.2ftlbs. My husband and I are heavily in to PCP guns so we have pretty much every slug that you can think of so we can try them out in our spring guns without having to buy some just to try. We have a TX200 MKII and MKIII .22 and a Pro Sport .22 (our MKIII is a tack driver with slugs but the MKII and Pro Sport shoot everything we have tried really bad lol) a HW30 .22, HW97KT .22 and a Beeman R1 .22. And we have tried slugs in all of them and tried many many different slugs in each. What we have found is that the shorter the slug the better and .217 slugs almost always shoot better then .218s in all out guns. The TX200MKIII will shoot Griffin deep hollow base .217 16g slugs better at 50y then it shoots its fav pellet JSB 15.89s its consistently will put ten in 1 inch at 50y totally amazing. The R1 will shoot .217 17.5g slugs pretty dang good but really only out to 40y and they start to open up quickly beyond that but at 40 and in the groupings are impressive for a super mag Springer shooting slugs. The HW97KT is a laser with JSB 18.13s for a Springer it will put ten inside of 1.25 to 1.5 inch at 50y and is a sub 1 inch 10 shot gun at 40y it's not as accurate as my Air Arms Springers but damn close. It really likes the AVS cup base 20g and will push them to 17.2ftlbs. I will say this when shooting slugs out of springers the lock time is INCREASED in every single one we have shot them in.. Pellets start moving and leave the barrel faster then slugs so your form and follow thru better be on point when shooting slugs in springers or groups will be bad... Shooting slugs in springers has literally made us better shots PERIOD in powder burners, PCP and springers. The guns become far more hold sensitive due to that increased lock time (lock time as in from trigger pull to slug exiting muzzle). The HW97KT will print (if we do our part) 50y groups with the AVS slugs of about 2 inches for ten shots. Now the TX200MKIII is shooting a deep cup (more like a half pellet half slug time round / Hybrid) and happens to love that slug thats why it pretty much shoots it as accurate as it does pellets.. The HW97KT is shooting a true slug so the groups being 2 inches is really saying something because there is no drag stabilization with that slug vs the deep cup slug is some what drag stabilised as well as spin stabilized... The slug the HW shoots well is only being spin stabilized. What's really impressive about the AVS slugs in the KW97KT is that the groups don't totally fall apart past about 70y like the Deep cup slugs shot out the TX200MKIII. We have shot them at 100y out the HW97KT and 10 shot 100y groups are consistently under 5 inches... Yes i know that's 5moa and thats not good... Speaking from a pcp gun point of view yes that's terrible but from a Springer shooting slugs that's amazing... The TX200MKIII with the deep cup slugs totally falls apart after about 70y even tho it's shooting 1 inch groups at 50... By a 100 groups are over 15 inches and a lot key hole... The shallow cup based AVS slugs out the HK97KT stay stable over a 100y flight. Test some out.... Shooting heavier then about 22 grains is going to be a waste of time... Get some .217 slugs between 15 and 20 grains and see what happens i would almost bet you will find one that will shock you... Start with the .217 NSA 17.5 grain... 400 cost 18 bucks... I haven't had one springer that shoots the FX hybrids worth of crap even (they shoot lights out in pretty much every pcp we have shot them in) (Griffin slugs are where FX hybrids was designed IE rat sniper) and the reason is the weight not the design... The Griffin 16g will shoot decent to very well in a lot of springers.... In fact a friend shoots them in his box store Crosman F4 .22 and they shoot as good or better then pellets and thats not a one off. Length/weight is the most important thing.... The shorter the slug the better likelihood that lower powered guns and slow twist rate barrels will be able to stabilize it. Be careful with .218s in choked barrels as 15 to 18ftlb guns shooting even a 20g .218 slug has a good chance of not being able to get the slug past the choke... Lighter .217s are no problem...

A .22 cal. Short rimfire projectile (29 grains), that has been slugged (passed through from the chamber and through the bore emerging at the muzzle of a .22 cal. barrel - preferably the one from which it will be shot afterwards), will work just like any other slug, if it is still undamaged after removed from a .22 Short with pliers and in perfect concentric condition after a careful slugging. Hey Travis, Thanks for the great accuracy tests and performance in break barrels versus pcps. I was wondering if; 1. heavier slugs are quieter than pellets and 2. higher fpe than pellets 3. does the slug increase or decrease the range versus a pellet due to ballistic coefficient? The reason I'm asking is because I am curious to know which one would be better for humane hunting for medium size game like raccoons, possums, or turkeys. Thanks again. Hello AD... I'm a life long shooter but am coming upon new information as times and products change or evolve in pellet design. Now that I'm retired, I take up my time reloading & shooting centerfire, carbon arrows and now very cool looking pellets and slugs. I tried to look up answers for my questions on your Airgun Depot website but could not find an avenue. So, I ask my questions here if it is okay with Y'all. 1) Could you please break down what and why the .217 or .218 OD of each pellet is significant and how it effects performance? Is there a formula for shooting the .217 with a heavier slug or pellet feasable? Is shooting the .218 better with lighter slug or pellet? Does the slug need to "completely" contact the rifling lands? I'm guessing these numbers are for inside diameter for the .22 pellets or slugs. How the heck do they group these measurements at the factory? (sized batches?) 2) Slugs & Slugs... Can I shoot slugs out of my Parrus .177 barrel or 16 year old RWS 48 .22 barrel or 12 year old Diana 350 .22 rifles that have rifling rather a slug barrel? Do I need a different barrel for slugs? I really like the concept of the ballistic coeffiency in slugs down range, though it may be moot in a springer and more pertinent towards more powerful PCP's zipping down range. (?) 3) Does "swagging" (resizing for consistency) insititute better performance, I wonder are there dies for this that you sell? Can I use my very old RCBS swage tools? (pejoratively) 4) When are Y'all gonna offer more variety in slugs, will prices go down, will count quantities in tins go up ???? Your YT video is 1.5 years old as I'm viewing it in June 2021, so how much do things change in airgun technology in a year? Thanks A Lot... I look forward to your response and will share it to everyone. L. James

Slugs like more power to stabilize. Twist rate is a factor. Distance to target is a factor. They buck the wind better than pellets. Like me I dont hunt past 35 to 50 yards you get them to group and you're done. Ignore a flyer here and there. I shoot NSA, AVS, ratsnipers and FX slugs. I'm looking forward to testing H& N slugs.
@airgundepot

Yes, they do need higher fps to get spinning faster. Unlike pellets that are drag stabilized, slugs are only spin-stabilized, so they seldom shoot well at distance unless they are going over 800fps as a general rule.

I got to say it's my favorite video by you by far. Okay with slugs the whole idea is that they carry their energy further longer Downstream because they're more aerodynamic so really doesn't help us much when you shoot at 33 yards and don't carry the same information out to 50 + yards. Also it would have been helpful if you would have given us the the Diablo pellet that gun particularly likes against the Slugs to see how they are out at 50 + yards. I realize that you're trying to sell the sampler pack but it would have been really helpful to give us the slug size and weight that each gun liked seeing how you have those at your disposal. Also a link to a PDF file which each gun manufacturer slugs versus the the Diablo pellets that they like at distances and how big the sizes are or the the foot per second upon impact leaving an impact of target. I realize you're trying to sell slugs and the sampler pack would be the best bet for us to try out with each manufacturer because each of our barrels may not be tuned to the manufacture specs that you're using at current time. Although you're handsome young man really don't need a picture of you shooting every shot if you could speed that up a little bit it's nice cuz we can see the gun and that but you could also put up a picture of the slug 10 that it's coming out of and each shot string slow it down to a pause frame so we can see the shots during the average and again the leaving the barrel foot per second and impact at Target foot per second to see how much is lost that information by percentage or pounds would be really awesome. So again young man you have left us with more questions than you gave us answers and I think the whole idea is for you to sell pellets and give good information so please do your research edit and give us good information. You could give us by manufacturer so we can look it up on KZbin I know that's a lot of work for you but we could Zone in on that if you want to do a group because it would be nice for you to do like six or seven Karl manufacturers or 10 Hatsan products and yes split it out between Springer's and pcp's. I don't know who does your research on what we need to part with our cash for your videos but they need to be fired. Please try to get your videos down to 3 to 5 minutes. Can't tell you how mad I get when I am 7 or 8 minutes into one of your videos and find it a waist of my time because you have failed to supply the critical information needed to make an informed purchase from Airgun Depot which is a great company to do business with. If you need for me to send you a quick little video on how it's done let me know I'd be more than willing to send you a quick little 3 minute video. I really don't mean to be a hater but you know I'm your customer and I sure would like to get some information that I need to buy the products that you sell.

@seanbrossard8178
@seanbrossard8178 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you did give the diameter and weight and average Fps but were at barrel or target? The whole idea is to show how much energy at impact that is why at least 2 points of impact would give us the ability to see the benefits of slugs over Diablo. you danced around that 800fps or faster is needed to get most slugs to stabilize. What I wanted to know is the areonomic coefficient of the slug versus the Diablo. Something like for every 10 yards 2%(23fps) energy is shed on this slug but the Diablo sheds 8% so the Diablo may leave the barrel faster than the slug and be more or close to the same at a 30 yr target but a 50 yards the slug is traveling faster and retained more energy. Because slugs will start to destabilize and we would like to know about were that happens at. So the benefits of slugs for hunting or the affect of crosswind will only be affective for up to a certain distance. Get were i am coming from? Is it cost effective to purchase slugs if I can only get out 10 more yards accurately and gain 20% more impact damage if am hunting a 3 lbs. Target. Not very cost affective. But let's say that is a 45lbs target and high crosswind and I can't get within 30yrds for that opportunity to take the shot, than yes worth the expense. Or am I just trying to get sub 1" shots at 50yrds and the numbers work out than again yes I would pony up the cash. But your video gave us no way to make that calculation as there was no fps recorded at 2 different points of impact. that would give us the ability to get the maximum acceptable distance for our application. Now I know you get that most of your consumers are in the budget friendly range hence the topic of the video. So why don't you give the information we need to commit to this kind of purchase? Does it really hurts your profits that much to give us the information needed to narrow down our choices to get the things that will work in our guns as apposed to serval barely used tins in our arsenal? We're is the customer service and loyalty in that? I know your going to give me some flipped response and not consider a policy change here. Trust me it won't effect your bottom line in the big picture. I am assuming that competition from other companies is fears and you do spend time and money to make us loyal customers. So my bottom line is your writer is not a shooter or this is your business model and not a good one. I don't mean to be to be ungrateful or mean harted just and observations from a frustrated customer when it comes to travis videos. I very much enjoy the top five with Jacquard the writing and editing is spot on.
@seanbrossard8178
@seanbrossard8178 4 жыл бұрын
@Travis Patten no what I want to know and several others have comment on the foot per second that the slug is traveling when it leaves the barrel and what the foot per second it is traveling when it hits the target at two data points (30yrs,50yrds,100yrds) but the speed at 3 target ranges even better. And why don't you get why we would need the speed at impact? This is physics plain math. And why do you think I would want to know when the slug falls bellow 700fps? So I would be able to cauclate when the slug would destabilise hence the farthest it will travel with acceptable accuracy. So for someone who does this for a living I don't get why you don't understand why we would need this. All this is just a way for most gunners to calculate the aerodynamic coefficients of the slug verse the pellet. So if that is printed on the tin that is what I need. Have you done ballistic calculations before? So here the information you need to know in a nutshell. Aerodynamic coefficient, spin rate(rpm) and the foot per second the projectile leaves the barrel. Then you can calculate when the projectile will fall below the properties needed to maintain gyroscopic pression. That is the quick and dirty. There are other things that come into play like temp, humidity, elevation. The two pioneers for the physics of this are Bernoulli and Newton 1st & 3rd law. So the quick and easy way for us to get this information if let's say you said the slug left the gun at 920fps and at 100yrds it was going 820fps how much farther would it go before destabilizing? So with that you would say the accurate range would be 120 yards but probably could push that out to 150yrds with reasonable accuracy.
