@@zackzallie8735 I hope I'm not insulting your music knowledge here, but since Sly & The Family Stone has such a wide audience and is still listened to even now so many years later, it occurred to me that you might not be old enough to realize I was making reference to a song from the 60's: Richard Harris' *MacArthur Park.* If you're not familiar with it, I hope you'll listen and see how strongly I feel about Sly Stone having such a unique sound! By the way, Zack Zallie, nice metaphor. Or maybe you got the idea from MacArthur Park, too! :D

Yes, I can hear how new it must have sounded at the time, and how well they bring these simple, early electronic tracks together with the music. The most striking thing to me about the song is the rugged soulfulness of the vocals and lyrics - it really feels like he's singing about people who have had experiences they both want to talk about and can't or won't talk about. It comes thiough in his drawling voice, the phrasing, and also in the lyrics of the second verse...Incredibly poignant song.

Yes, such a beautiful track in its deceptive simplicity. It sounds rugged, worn but soulful, the understated pain here gets me every time. It really feels like he's trying to talk about experiences too painful to openly admit, something that comes through in the paradoxes of the lyrics to the second verse. "Doctor Wu" by Steely Dan has a similar feeling that the main character (voiced by Donald Fagen) is both trying to tell us a story about deception and pain (drug addiction) and trying *not* to tell it - because it's too painful and personal...his voice conveys this double direction.

Love how the voices are set very dry (and possibly a bit overdriven) so that the words cut right through. Every other part of the recording crystal clear by using spacing across the left and right with the rhythm (bass and drums) right down the middle.

Although I actually do not know much about Sly & the Family Stone, I think “Family Affair” is definitely one of the funkiest funk music I’ve ever listened to. Especially I like the low and cool voice of Sly Stone. I loved the lyrics.

Sly Stewart just knew how to write and compose songs that people wanted to listen (and groove) to. His absence from mainstream music for the last 45 years + is one of the biggest lapses/fall from greatness in the music industry ever.
