Yes, I can hear how new it must have sounded at the time, and how well they bring these simple, early electronic tracks together with the music. The most striking thing to me about the song is the rugged soulfulness of the vocals and lyrics - it really feels like he's singing about people who have had experiences they both want to talk about and can't or won't talk about. It comes thiough in his drawling voice, the phrasing, and also in the lyrics of the second verse...Incredibly poignant song.

Yes, such a beautiful track in its deceptive simplicity. It sounds rugged, worn but soulful, the understated pain here gets me every time. It really feels like he's trying to talk about experiences too painful to openly admit, something that comes through in the paradoxes of the lyrics to the second verse. "Doctor Wu" by Steely Dan has a similar feeling that the main character (voiced by Donald Fagen) is both trying to tell us a story about deception and pain (drug addiction) and trying *not* to tell it - because it's too painful and personal...his voice conveys this double direction.

I remember this coming out of the AM radio in my dad’s 67 cutlass station wagon. Mesmerizing even on AM mono radio.

Love the way he embraces and then glides thru the lyrics with his easy baritone. I remember when the song was released. Still sounds fresh.
