If that was a city of millions in the US, there would be homeless tents covering the sidewalks. I’ve lived in the area (Zapopan) for 4 years. Great year round weather, great food, beautiful women and centrally located for multiple day trips. I’ve never had any issues with crime but the traffic does suck.

This one of my favorite Mexico, cities outside of the state of Quintana Roo. I only left to head elsewhere because I need coastal living, but, GDL is a city I would be more than happy to revisit. Hoping to head to Ecuador or Panama soon, if I don't end up back in Mexico for the 4th time in the past two years.

Buddy, you'll be surprised when you finally get Guadalajara's big picture. Although Mexico city is larger and a lot more crowded, Guadalajara is a huge metropolis with an estimated actual population of over 6 million which would be the counterpart of Houston by American standards. Downtown area is mostly flat but by no means is the city a flat place. There are hundreds of high-rises and some skyscrapers. There's a subway system, BRT, and the largest public bicycle network in Mexico called Mibici. It's a very cosmopolitan multicultural lively place with tons of places to go. The balance between its Mexican vibe and other influences is as remarkable as its balance between tradition and modernity. Keep looking.

I just came back from Guadalajara last month. I like the city overall and the people are nice. The food and shopping are fantastic as one would expect. However, the abundance of graffiti detracts from the city's aesthetic. Traffic is a challenge. A vehicle is a must for long term stays. The city is not "touristy" by gringo standards(no resorts or beaches). Spanish is a must here. The brothels are decent too.

ive lived in gdl for almost a year without a car, it's not a problem. can uber / didi almost anywhere for like 70 pesos lol and the weather is virtually always decent so you can walk pretty much anywhere. kinda depends on what area you're living in. most tapatias ive met only have a car if they live far, far, far away from work -- and even most of them dont want to drive and prefer uber/didi. you also see a lot of bicyles mibici. most ppl i know live in tlaquepaque and that area and they dont have cars. i know one person with a car, and they only use it for day trips to tequila, guachimontes, chapala etc.. agreed with graffiti, dog poop and occasionally human feces as well. i know very, very basic spanish and i get along just fine. definitely a less touristy city, i think that is why people like it. its a shame lola lolita closed... the stage shows ....

Guadalajara and Medellín are similar. They are the second most important city in their countries, deep-rooted traditions and very friendly people. In differences, Medellín is a little warmer, the women are equally beautiful on both sides. Guadalajara is more Modern and Technological. Medellín is more tropical and with more vegetation, although Guadalajara is very wooded and has a better climate. Better purchasing power and quality of life in Guadalajara, it is also a little safer than Medellín. Anyway, they are both great cities!

I have lived in both cities. I can tell you that there is better purchasing power in Guadalajara. You have more opportunities to start a business or find work. Mexico is safer than Colombia. Guadalajara has a lot of connectivity both by air and by land. Excellent Food and Restaurants, many sports and concert activities. Medellín is very friendly and they love to party, the climate is warmer, it has less connectivity, but the landscapes are beautiful. A matter of taste, but there are more Colombians living in Mexico than Mexicans in Colombia, with that I told you everything.

Bruh... Downtown Guadalajara is actually the danger zone! if you survived that then you're good everywhere else lol. Plus I am extremely surprised that you would think Guadalajara is "woke" (not to sugarcoat it by calling it Hippie). Guadalajara is actually the bastion of Conservatism in Mexico, even the most liberal of us are anti-woke. The reason being gay is "common" in Guadalajara is because we just don't think it's a big deal. In the rest of Mexico they still hold on to extremely prejudiced ultra-conservative macho views about sexuality. In other regions men feel their masculinity threatened but in Jalisco overall since we are the heart of Charro culture we do not feel as thought our manhood is on the line just cause some guys are gay. It just doesn't bother us.
