I don't mean to play down the impressive amount of work this must have taken and the vision behind it, but I legitimately don't think this looks better than the original. Lots of critics in the comments, haha. Lots of stuff said is fair, especially when we’ve had a pretty rigid idea of how the game is meant to look for decades. But even still, effective art style or not, I think this is a really sweet project. It feels like an AU where the game was made on a console that came out between the N64 and GameCube. It’s got the plastic-y feel of sunshine with the levels and textures of the original game. The developer absolutely succeeded in accomplishing what they wanted to do.

This project is really nice! There's a lot to love about this but my favorite part is that they added platforms, pillars and little thresholds to make everything look more like someone actually build the castle (and levels) with an intent. The original in many parts just felt like random geometry. See 8:36 - the little window that leads to the Drown House level actually has a little balcony and the added curves make it look like it's an intentional thing, rather than just a cut out square that had no explanation. Of course, this must be taxing like crazy on the polycount and it's understandable that this wouldn't run on original hardware, but that's fine by me. Would love to see more of this idealized version of the game!

- A lot of noise textures added with no rhyme or reason here. Stars are the most obvious offender, but its all over the game. It makes the textures look splotchy and ugly. - Cliffs also look weird and undefined, like there was a cloud render texture chucked over the top with no real definition added. - A lot of smoothing and beveling looks good, but I'm not sure about the gameplay implications. In this video itself, you can see Mario interacting oddly with some rounded surfaces. - I wish the paintings had some geometry and 3D frames. With the rest of the bevelling, the lack of 3D picture frames feels like an absence in this art style.

My comment isn't a hater comment. People have been doing high detail reimagings of SM64 for over a decade, no doubt inspired by Nintendo's own remakes (SM64DS, SMG2's Whomps Fortress, SMO's Castle Grounds). This romhack is one part of that creative conversation, and I do think its a fine one to have. My criticisms are to help it, not to stop it.

one of my earliest memories of a video game was when i was three. i was in a mcdonalds and i recall seeing a screen with a video game on it, and the area of the game looked like the first room in peach's castle in mario 64. but a couple years later, when i saw someone playing through the game again and they entered that area, it felt.. different. like the game i saw at mcdonalds wasn't really super mario 64. it's really weird that the castle from this newly made romhack feels a lot more like the castle i saw at that mcdonalds 22 years ago than the actual real game. i have no idea why that is and i will probably never find out either

The game probably has an out of sight out of mind thing, which isnt a problem in base game cuz the lower poly count when you turn back to load it in, even with the emulator. But with the larger poly count of the castle, and having to load all that back in in an instant, crashes the game. Or I'm stupid idk.
