Smailholm Tower, situated in the Scottish Borders, was built around 1450. This medieval tower served primarily as a defensive structure during a tumultuous period in Scottish history. Originally constructed as a fortified home, it later became a symbol of the region's rich history.
Sir Walter Scott, the renowned Scottish writer, spent time here as a child and drew inspiration from the tower and its surroundings, featuring it in his literary works. Today, Smailholm Tower stands as a well-preserved historical monument and is open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's past and its cultural significance.

Wonderful narration as always, Alessa! I had never heard of the border reivers until we visited the Scottish borders a couple years ago. What a fascinating area! I definitely learned a lot of new facts listening to your explanation. I can't imagine what it must've been like to live then. It would've been terrifying! It's sobering to remember this side of the story when you go around the borders area and see castle after castle. As an American, we see these buildings and say "wow, how awesome that they built all these lovely castles!" But the sad reality is that people did that to protect their homes and families from all the lawlessness!!!
