Steve is still surrounded by white tech guys, a message to black people to train and fight to get these jobs too. I say this as a white Irish london man. Beautiful film, brought me back. I didn’t know the difference between black and white when I was a child. Later in life I started notice hate, it was a very angry time in British history. I must say, being a Irish baby in london, was a cultural bath bomb because we were treated to some of the best reggae ever.

I enjoyed the movie, but there were some disappointments. Firstly I don't know why with so many Jamaican/Caribbean origin people in UK, they could not have found actors whose accents were more on point, at times it was painful to listen to. If the aim of the movie was to capture the feel of the Blues Dance, they did get some things right, but missed it on others. Usually the light was dim, or completely off, perhaps for filming purposes they had to do that. Secondly, I found the dancing borderline raunchy, yes we did slow dance and 'rub' but usually when meeting a woman for the first time at a party, most of them would not have taken kindly to a guy smooching and groping on them like that, although if you were in a relationship with her or knew her a little better, it would have been more acceptable. Minor point, I probably went to hundreds of Blues Dances, because my parents used to hold them frequently, a relative of mine had a Sound System, and there was a circuit of people in N. London, who used to keep and follow certain Sound Systems religiously so every weekend there was a Blues dance or two, or more to go to, I never saw Ackee and Saltfish served at a Blues Dance, it was usually curry goat and rice, and beef patties. Also by the late 70s early 80s most Sound Systems had two turntables, although I will admit that of all the accents the DJs was probably the most convincing. The music was pretty good, he hit the spot with "Baby My Love' which has got to be one of the all-time classics of Lovers Rock, and of course the Janet Kay tune from which the movie takes its name was right on point. The movie captured a slice of life which was really prominent in the lives of West Indians living especially in the UK, during the 60s-80s so on that score I'd say to Steve McQueen it was a nice try, and quite entertaining, bearing in mind that it was a movie and not a documentary so I can forgive some of the things that I have mentioned, because they really didn't take away from the fun or enjoyment of the movie. As for the storyline, I actually thought that the absence of a strong story line was actually pretty good, you're not going to get into anything too deep at a Blues dance, apart from a guy coming in and wanting to make trouble, boy meets girl, and vice versa, and a multitude of interactions some good and some bad in the course of the night, had the movie been anything longer than 70 minutes it would have needed more substance.

Quite disappointed in this programme as it was not a true representation of how things were, the producers should have done better.
