Actually, the modification is not that difficult. I really don't consider it unsafe either, as the output end really has little or no power going through it after the mod. The following is how I performed the mod on this newer style Sonoff Basic: 1. The heavy black wire running from the Neutral post at the input end can be desoldered at both ends and discarded. 2. Then, a small cut (I uses a dremel with a worn down cutoff wheel - as it had a much smaller diameter than a new one) between the 2 terminals shown in this video can be made. NOTE: Using solder wick to remove a lot of solder in this area, and bending the 2 leads away from where the cut will be made, PRIOR to cutting makes this task MUCH easier. 3. I used a much smaller gauge wire (20 gauge will work for this purpose) to solder from the relay terminal (NOT the fuse terminal) at one side of the cut, run through the slot next to the relay, and the other end onto the neutral terminal at the output end of the device. I've built 3 of these devices over the past 4 weeks, and all are operating nicely. I hope this explanation is clear enough for others to follow - I'm not a videographer so won't be posting a video of this modification.

I used a dremel to increase the distance between the neutral and the relay contact. I had to move the fuse over a little but that was no problem. I do still get about 20VAC between the mains and relay contacts, any suggestion as to the path for this. Do I have to remove a resistor or something on the Basic V2?

Alternatively, desolder the fuse and input-side neutral wire, then connect/solder the neutral wire to the fuse and resolder the fuse's long lead to the board. AC&DC are on the same terminal block, but it works without needing a dremel.

Thanks for your videos. Excellent. I want to use a Sonoff RFR2 or Basic RFR2 as a GDO so I can also used the RF433 signal. However, I can't find any video instructions for any of you smart guys that have done it. 1. Is it possible? 2. Would you please make a video on this version for us? By the way, the insides of the RFR2 look nothing like the R2
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any Basic RF devices. And I have already noticed it with R2 that the circuit is much tighter, I could not make a clean cut I could recommend to others. What I would rather recommend to get a separate 120/220V relay. So the unmodified Sonoff drives a relay and the garage motor is connected to the relay output. Also keep in mind that these RF433 devices use fixed coding. It is very easy to listen in the signal and repeat it. This is why garage door openers are expensive and they use more sophisticated encoding.

@@csongorvarga The RFR2 looks different than the R2. I understand what you mean by RF433 being weaker. Not an issue for me. And I have more than one auto GDO. I have been using the Sonoff Basic from our video for a long time. I just want RF433 so I can use extra fobs to open door - because I am lazy. I'll pay for the RFR2 and a hub for you if you will work on this.

Hi Vorga, Thanks a lot for your good work. Since your video is done almost 6 months ago, is there any sonoff product that we can use without any modifications? Also can't we use the app with itching option updated in the ewilink? Kindly advice.

First, thanks for your videos. Informative and appreciate your insight on practical/safe advice. I'm far from an electrician and unfamiliar with the parts and terms. Is there a reason one couldn't find a switch that opens and closes the circuit based on the presence of AC power? 1. SonOff sends AC to Solid State Relay 2. Solid state relay will open/close zero voltage circuit based on the existence of AC Seems like that would be simple and basic device. My limited searching suggests the solution is rare/expensive.

Actually very good point. I was also surprised to find that it is actually very difficult to find mains relays. But that is certainly a good option as well.

Hi there i pressed the link for guide to BASICR2 but this does not look like my sonoff basic R2 do you know if it is possible to make the basicR2 work as garageopener?
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 3 жыл бұрын
I would not do that. The PCB layout is much denser, it would be very difficult to make a cut and not cut anything else. I suggest to check out a Sonoff SV. That has all the relay output separated and does not need an hardware modification.

I also was able to use a dremel tool bit to sever the connection between the two solder points. I placed a bit of shrink tube to isolate the fuse. Then changed the settings in eWelink app to inching (1.0s). Tested the connections and tested the unit.All is good, but I cannot get the garage door to open when sending a signal through the sonoff unit. It is on my wifi network. It is powered through wall outlet. But output connections do not seem to be working. Any ideas? It is running eWelink not Tasmota. Any help would be appreciated.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
First of all is the device working? I assume it is online in eWelink and you can switch it on and off. Can you hear the relay clicking? If not you may have cut too much and the relay is not getting power. If so, did you also soldered the jumper wire on the output side of the cut? If the answer to this is all yes, than it must be the garage motor connection which is wrong. But I would not be able to help you with that.

@@csongorvarga Thank you. I rechecked the solder connection and it had come loose when I squeezed the board back into the cover. I re-soldered and make some cuts on the cover to accomodate the jumper wire's new position. It works !!! Wish I could attach photos on here to show it. Now, Google Home only shows last state and doesn't revert to off state, but the eWelink app does revert to off-state. weird.
