Small Boat Hits Great White Shark Head On

In this video, I share a variety of interactions between boats and great white sharks, including one accidental boat strike on a shark larger than the boat itself.
A vast majority of boat owners are good people, with a true appreciation for nature, but a very small minority could probably improve their approach to respecting nature.
Some folks have often claimed that sharks can't get struck by boats simply because they either move out of the way or hear the boat long before it strikes. This video proves otherwise. We also examine the protections put into place for whales and how boats approach them versus how boats approach sharks within a nursery.

Also, people who say sharks will hear the boats may not realize just how well sound travels through water. When boats travel along the surface around divesites, the sound is so overwhelming for divers below that you have no reference point of where it's coming from...even whales spotted 3 miles away sound like they're singing and clicking right next to you.

As my grandmother used to say “there’s always some fool who will poke a sleeping rattler with a short stick.” As for myself, I always feel sad for the children or pets of people like the jet skier who harassed the birds. The impact on our beautiful home of human lack of respect for nature and mistaken belief we are at the top of “great chain of being” is obvious. Due to exactly this, the South African government has imposed MPA's (Marine Protected Areas), but over and beyond that it's illegal to approach any sealife within 300yards - what IS ok, is for boats to move ahead of sealife and cut motors to allow the sealife to approach them on their own terms. Accidents happen, but so so many can be avoided.

It is illegal to harass wildlife in almost every state. “No person shall pursue, drive, herd or take any bird or mammal from any type of motor-driven air or land vehicles, motorboat, airboat, sailboat or snowmobile” (California Code of Regulations Title 14, section 251). Also, “No person shall harass, herd or drive any game or nongame bird or mammal or furbearing mammal. For the purposes of this section, harass is defined as an intentional act which disrupts an animal’s normal behavior patterns, which includes, but is not limited to breeding, feeding or sheltering” (CCR Title 14, section 251.1)

Especially in the ocean! That's 100% not our territory but we treat it and its inhabitants so poorly, with no respect or compassion. Underwater, the sound of an outboard motor is overwhelming. It is difficult to determine from what direction the sound is coming. Ask any diver or freediver who has visited a place like Cozumel and he/she will tell you, you have to constantly keep your eyes up while surfacing because you just cannot get a bearing on where the boat is coming from.

Love the channel content about the white shark behavior you film from your drone. Commercial drones have really changed the field for viewing all sharks and whales without the animal even knowing your watching them at a reasonable price for the drone because not everyone can afford a helicopter to watch sharks or purchase a expensive drone. I hope I make sense trying to explain it. Can i suggest you could maybe add the estimated length of the white shark or other sharks in the top right corner of your video because if I'm wondering how big the shark is, then maybe your viewers have the same question too. We can and should do better for these beautiful vital creatures for our ecosystems to thrive. I was appalled to see a shark tour boat speeding through a known shark nursery. They should know better and if they don’t why? They need to be giving tours with education as a background in the sharks environment and passing that on to the tourists through appropriate behavior in the environments they are touring.

Finally you found the most damage and harm to sharks, whales and other marine creatures on water surfaces. Boats, motor skis, ships are responsible for MOST near shore shallow water injuries to these marine creatures. When people saw a dead shark with fishing hook injury, or fishing net injury, hundreds of thousand of tongues slash the fishermen online, but totally ignored the thousands times more injuries/death caused by the machines. You need to mount a loud speaker on the drone to warn the marine machine operators that they are endangering marine lives. Good work, keep it up. 😎

Swimming after work was one of the few recreational activities we had. When the sharks and barracuda were in the neighborhood we waited it out on the beach. Except for one time. About an 8’ blue shark was between me and the surface while I was snorkeling. Thankfully the tide was incoming and pushed me underwater till I hit the shore.

Obviously I’m not the great Malibu Artist but I’ve been sailing and diving the area for over 40 years and I’d say that it typically is much clearer in the winter time. That doesn’t explain if the footage was taken in the summer but on a calm day it’s pretty clear year around. The winds come up between 12 and 2 in the warmer months bringing chop which reduces visibility.

I wonder if a speed limit on all motor craft within a certain distance from the shore would be of help. I feel sure that this area will become more populated with all kinds of sea life as time goes on, if allowed, as it should be. But that would make more regulations and education necessary - for everyone’s safety. I don’t see that happening.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that sharks food source’s are declining and the more human contact they have the more attacks on humans will occur. So for the people that keep getting really close to sharks hopefully you realise that its your fault that they don’t fear us and what we use in their hunting grounds

Harassing sea life is animal abuse no different than abusing a dog or cat or any animal . These type of people should get violations of $$ or something to teach them a lesson.
