Kayak Fisherman Is Surrounded by Great White Sharks

This month, I set out to film kayak fishermen in California. I was curious to see if any great white sharks could be found nearby. Kayak fishermen are actually a water activity I've not documented with sharks nearby in the past. That's because I haven't tried. This is footage from my very first day of trying. The results are not surprising.

I’ve been open ocean kayak fishing in So Cal. For 30+ years and it’s really disturbing to see these guys dangling fish over the side and basically training whites that kayaks mean food. I get that they’re trying to keep their catch fresh until they go in, but it’s just careless and naive to essentially troll a few large halibut baits next to their kayaks in waters well known for whites.

It’s amazing to me how timid that first shark was with the kayakers. It wanted that dangling fish so bad, but didn’t go after it. It seems to me that hanging the fish over the kayak like that is pretty dumb.

Human exhibiting stupidity in this instance, dangling a distressed fish as bait. Then later on when attacked, they become helpless victims while the shark is only doing instinctively what it's born to do, catch food. Luckily for the stupid fishermen, it's not a tiger, much more a bull shark, that's out there...

They are in a vessel with basically zero protection, dragging live, flailing, bleeding fish. When something does end up happening to one of the fishermen, it will be the sharks that are made out to be the monsters, which can potentially end up getting many sharks killed. It's ridiculous the way they drag those fish (not to mention cruel to the poor fish).

As someone who fishes in saltwater in a kayak I know to never, ever keep a fish on a stringer! Where I go in Florida the issue isn't Great Whites, but bull sharks and alligators/crocs. And holy crap I thought all saltwater kayak fishermen knew not to do this!

I think what made the situation a little bit less tense is that most sharks in the area this was filmed seem to be young. As the videos of this channel show they will often be very careful if they face a thing what is as big as they are. Maybe a greater shark, 15 feet long or so, would have acted different? But I think it is indeed a very risky behavior to put a wounded fish in the water in areas in which greater sharks of any kind are known to be present. I mean it is the same why you should not have food in your tent if you sleep in bear-areas. You almost ask for troubble... The animals are no monsters, but they are powerful and you should not create a situation which increases the risk of an attack.

Most all kayak fisherman I know in SoCal, myself included, are using the kayak cooler bags, clipped to the front deck of their kayak, to avoid dangling 1/2 dead Yellowtail off their kayak. Between Seals and Sharks, something is going to rip it off your game clip and possibly dump you in the water in the process. A few years ago, a local kayak fisherman landed a 30lb Yellowtail off La Jolla. He was bleeding it out in his kayak, when a 12' Hammerhead swam up parallel within inches of his kayak, tipped his head to the side, trying to peer into his kayak, attempting to see the yellowtail. He obviously followed the blood scent trail up to the kayak. There's just too many sharks, mostly GWS, here in SoCal and you have to be smart.

@@emmansk7 I just bleed it really fast in the kayak, quickly rinse it, zip it in the cooler back and clean off the deck. Then paddle quickly away from the kill site. You just have to be careful and a little lucky.

Thanks, I've had three (that I know of) encounters with GW while kayak fishing. And they were much closer than that. Within ten feet of me and closer. I about shit my pants the first time, and it's always scary to have them circling and swimming underneath. It's good to see these videos, helps me understand them better. I would never tow fish. Regardless of sharks, Sea lions would not hesitate to grab a fish and they could flip a kayak over. They would also attack you if you tried to get your fish from them. Spear fishing is awesome, but not for me. That's begging for trouble.

We had a spearfisher taken by a great white a while back where I live. All they found of him was a small part of his wetsuit. His son was with him when he was taken but got away safely. A while after that a diver was killed near where her partner was spearfishing. We're a known high fatality spot for great whites (Perth, western australia) but people still do it. Crazy.

Did you see when it spotted the drone shadow ? then spy hopped while trying to bite the shadow, and realised the drone was above it, and then trying to jump out of the water at it so these drones need a good zoom and a pilot with this level of knowledge to avoid affecting the sharks behaviour if the drone is made and we’re talking in a totally different medium These sharks are visual predators in particular great whites and mako. No wonder there is a problem with predicting the behaviour. Interacting in any direct medium, not only completely changes their behaviour and also risks over stimulation and potential for injury particularly if they are swimming outside of the cage or in one of those useless Perspex boxes. As for Osearch!!! Their contract should have been gone as soon as it was exposed! Can you believe they had enough clout to be able to have the channel that exposed them shadow banned……. The fact that the 2nd encounter was in shallow waters was probably the crux of the matter. The first shark was inexperienced and too cautious to attack. But the second one was big enough to take on the "large opponent" (aka the kajak), but the water was too shallow to dive down and build up sufficient speed to attack from below.

A lot has been written about the superb eyesight of Great White sharks, but that visual acuity obviously works just as well ABOVE the waterline, as evidenced by their ability to discern the front of the kayak, or perhaps the face of the fisherman, from the rear, whereby the shark ALWAYS closes in from the rear of that flimsy water craft. This biological fact about GW vision is sobering and frightening to contemplate.

I keep reading people shocked at the kayakers stringing their catch. Spear fishing requires the stringed catch to be attached to the diver or a nearby anchor line (No Kayak). Hahaha! These sharks are intelligent. Their amount of caution is strange considering they are an assumed top predator of the sea, next to the Orca pod. Showing the sharks curious approach is so important. I love this channel! Many people have a vicious image of these majestic fish. Such awesomeness 🤙🌊 Lol the 🏊‍♀️

They’re in waters known to have whites so, yes, it’s surprising that they are essentially trolling halibut. Sharks may be intelligent and cautious but, there is plenty of other video evidence showing them going after chum bait chunks on the end of ropes, so you can’t watch this video and a shark being cautious and then make the assumption that the shark is going to leave the fish alone. Had the man left the fish in the water, it’s entirely possible that the shark would have eventually felt confident enough to grab them. It wouldn’t take much to pull the kayak over and who knows what would have happened after that.

All my family surfs/boards & we haven't seen a white ever. This channel has taught us that we most definitely have swam with the "Fish are friends NOT Food!"Lol It's from a movie. The Drone "pov" makes it extra interesting watching these magnificent creatures! Its amazing to see the Sharks react to different situations, & not act as "expected" (like eating the Fish or eating the Human). If Great Whites were the "brainless, voracious eating machines" that main stream media want you to believe they are, both of these kayakers might have been in the "drink" almost immediately! (or wrestling the🦈for their 🐟back)!! Instead, as I've learned here, they are very careful & curious of their world around them. Great Whites are transient. One also only hears about the negative encounters, not the many times a GW was nearby and was uninterested and no encounter occurred. Therefore one is biased towards thinking that they are always aggressive towards humans. Here, in South Africa, we see GWs chilling in the surf near surfers all the time. I think they enjoy it.

the ones here in SoCal are probably teens or sub adults--they might view a Kayak as a larger predator...trying to 'filch' a meal might be dangerous or even fatal. Nevertheless, they might learn that they CAN, in fact, grab the catch without much danger; Now Hal from 'Sharks Happen' is of the opinion that Kayaks and boarders are a point of aggression for larger white sharks--THEY view the object as 'intruding' into their chosen spot to feed, hunt or patrol, and they act accordingly.

@@fenzirulfr Mexican, Cal, Oregon and probably Washington and BC white sharks have those expanding seal colonies (especially elephant seals) they patrol==big, fat and full of calories. These HUGE pinniped colonies of 'plus size', easy to catch pinniped snacks don't exist in Australia (or the Med for that matter, another one time hotspot of total consumption attacks by white sharks). White sharks are more mobile and their diets more varied: fish, rays, sharks, sea birds, reptiles, and mammals of various kinds. They are willing to take advantage of feeding opportunities when they happen. Some white sharks have simply adapted to a bony primate being a viable meal. You COULD say that humans are the cause of 'unfriendly' white shark encounters: the US marine mammal protection act allows seals and sea lion number to expand; White sharks are also protected from human harassment in many places, so THEIR numbers expand. With lots of food and growing numbers of white sharks, it's only a matter of time before we get more 'encounters'.

In the first encounter, the white shark checking out the seaweed, was exhibiting it's instinct to go after a potentially safer and easier meal. Interesting how it was associating the seaweed at the water's surface with the distressed fish that were also at the surface which too me, is bordering on abstract thinking.

I've lived in Malibu my while life, and there's an old story from the 80's about a half a kayak that washed up on shore with human legs still in it. I don't know if it's true or not, they used to keep shark attacks real hush hush, but its scared the kids for decades now.

It seems to me like the shark can't make up its mind about taking the chance and snatching the Halibut from the kayaker. Maybe because they're close in size and it might not be familiar with kayaks. I'm kind of surprised to see that the kayak is yellow. Isn't that color known as Yum Yum Yellow because sharks are attracted to it.

I have come to notice that the shark seems remarkably intelligent, so much so that either based on experience and clearly has been doing this for a while, seems to know exactly how the kayak is pointed and continiously stays with in a radial zone of about say 30 degrees behind. It is evident that this shark knows exactly where to stay without being seen and it seems that it is testing this theory by going closer and closer to the kayak. That is just fantastic and phenomenal to see. I also know that some catches break free, perhaps the shark again with experience knows that the fish will make a break for it by going the opposite direction of where the kayak appears longer, now knowing it is a threat and thus will swim in the general direction of the shark, something the shark is waiting for. Could be or it could be curiousity. People need to understand that we do not know anything, literally ziltch. In order to deem something a fact one must know everything of anything from then, now and what will be. This is just my personal take on what could be happening here based on my own analyses of what I am seeing, do not butcher me for it.

I live in coastal Northern California,I had a close encounter with a very large white shark in 2011.My kayak was 14 feet.The shark was at least 16 feet long.that encounter changed me forever.It was one the most beautiful,graceful and terrifying experiences I’ve ever had out there,and I’ve had many but that experience was truly magical. It was like encountering a very intelligent,ancient creature that knows more about you than you will ever understand about it.I feel like I encountered a creature that could only be compared with a Tyrannosaurus Rex…only way more intelligent and more ancient.Long May they live and balance the seas.

It's interesting that the shark appears to be in the range of 10' of length or so. This would imply a young adult fish and one that is on the cusp of graduating from a fish diet to sea mammals. That being the case two things seem plausible, the shark is uninterested in the catch of the two fishermen as it represents an insufficient calorie content for the effort it would take to feed on the halibut. You see this behavior as larger sharks swim in the company of relatively small fish without attempting to feed. Secondly, the shark may not be experienced enough to connect the kayaks to kayakers who would make a more calorie rich meal. This might be because while in transition from a fish to mammal diet the shark may not be fully conditioned to gauge a suitable target. The puzzling part is at 10' the presumed maturity of the shark seems like it would already be more aggressive in pursuit of suitable food.

Love your content! Can you recommend a drone to use if you are on vacation! I am going to Hawaii and it would be good to get visuals of the water so we can stick to areas with less shark activity. We tend to avoid areas with fisherman anyway but lots of shallow water encounters happening

I love your content! it really shows with as much close proximity with humans that these creatures have that they really generally dont give a hoot about humans unless they invade their territory somehow or they get mistaken for fuds .. with as many humans and sharks in the same area it makes sense why shark attacks appear to be up, though i am guessing if we were able to keep a per capita statistics of people in the water to shark in the water the numbers likely would not have increased..

My relatives grew up in Torrance and spent a lot of time at Torrance Beach and Redondo Beach. Do you ever go to either of those places to film? I've been there a lot over the years myself (from Oklahoma) and the last time we were there, they took us to Huntington Beach as well. That was in 2012 when they took us to Huntington Beach and about a month after we were there, someone caught a large Mako about a mile out from the beach there.

At some point if you’re able to film at night, it would be interesting to see the sharks difference in behavior. Assuming they do feed more at night, I wonder if part of the almost cathartic/inquisitive behavior you mostly observe is because the sharks have full bellies after nighttime feeding???🧐

You can take some precautions, don't swim at usual feeding times, around 5pm. Don't swim in overcast weather, and if you see seals stay out of the water. In fact, in Malibu, a shark attack has only happened once. So enjoy swimming in Malibu. 🙂

Just spent a few days in San Diego visiting family. Flew my drone around the sea lion colonies at La Jolla. Didn't see a single one. I have a lot of work to do in terms of determining the right time of day/year to find them.

This was so interesting. I was going to ask why these fisherman are leaving their catch in the water to attract predators...doesn't seem like a good idea. New Brighton State Beach, Santa Cruz County, has been known as Shark Park for last several years when juveniles reliably gather following a warming water trend. Plenty of video available, though usually not of similar quality as these you take and edit. You took footage of diving pelicans a few months ago. There are more brown pelicans this year in Santa Cruz than ever, perhaps seeking food in Monterey Bay as southern fish dwindle. I have seen pelicans by the dozens feet away from surfers, on both sides of breaking waves, to pursue fish balls.

Ok im not a fisherman (hunter i get my best sleep while hunting) but with dead & dieing fish in the water for the amount of time the shark kept coming in & out. I wounder when fisher throws out line with bait if that makes shark want to see about that?? Before your videos i would believe sharks would come in hard ( attack??) To get dinner. That's really surprising to me that the fisherman would let a fish dangle like that. It's just ringing the dinner bell for smaller sharks even. A spear fisherman I know in the keys, says that the sharks he has to worry about are the lemons and black tips. They will def charge him for the fish and come back.

Hi - Mali, forgot your real name so Mali will have to do for this comment. My father and his friends (and me to a minor degree in comparison) LOVE to go spearfishing out at the channel islands. One of your initial clips with the spear fisherman caught my eye. I’ve always wondered how often sharks may be near the and how they might react to a human going up and down in the water column (alert? Aloof?). If you could get some more footage with spearfisherman/free divers - or even urchin divers (should they let you inspect their precious ‘secret’ spots), I would be eternally intrigued and grateful!
