The Dynaco A-25's are from earlier than 1975 and the capicators in the crossover network should be updated. There is no crossover for the woofer, it's natural roll off at higher frequencies is designed in. Also the Dynaco speakers are not both of the same age. Great review. A friend of mine once owned 16 of the A-25's. Thanks.

Just found your channel and subscribed. You made excellent points on smaller speakers in small rooms. I’ve owned my Dynaco A25’s since 1974 and they are still my main speakers. Other speakers have come and gone, but the Dynaco’s are still my favorite.

I have a pair of Dynaco A25s I bought from my brother in 1980 for $50 (big investment at the time for a kid washing dishes). I've kept them through the years, and love their neutral character and presentation; haven't needed recapping yet. I have only recently updated the rest of the system to include a new Pioneer Elite AV receiver, a pair Polk Rti28s for rear channel speakers, and a Yamaha 10" sub. The Polk's are a revelation (to me) and have a great rich sound, and surprisingly good bass, and the Yamaha sub helps augment the Dynaco's bass shortcomings. After scoring a vintage Thorens td147 turntable with a B&O cartridge, I am in love with my vinyl again. The totality of the tonal spectrum of the speakers is finally where I want it, and they all complement each other with a nice balance.

Great review! Dynaco A25s were my first speakers as a teenager in 1973, and I loved them. I acquired another pair decades later for $5 at a garage sale, and I used them to good effect as a subwoofer for a 5.1 HT system, where they were nearly flat down to 32Hz! I also own the big brothers of your Quartets, the Forte 1s, which are great but pale in comparison to my DIY system compiled from two different brands of superb quality pro (Altec/JBL-ish) drivers from the 70's/80's, triamplified, and supplemented by a pro cinema sub; their rich tonality, lifelike dynamics and beguiling imaging are the best I've ever encountered, let alone owned. Multiamping with DSP is a game changer!

That was interesting to watch, Dave - thanks for sharing. I've got a pair of Dynamo A25s that I've enjoyed with a harman kardon 730 for around 4 years and have enjoyed them. I recently switched out the HK 730 for a Schiit Aegir and Saga S and they sound even better now. It was nice to see they fared well in your shootout. Well done video! Cheers, Tom

Just came across your videos. Love them! I have gone back and forth on a bunch of bookshelf speakers, but still can not find anything I love as much as my Dynaco A25s. Paired with either my Marantz 2230, or my new to me Fisher 800C - they just shine. And I really don't find them lacking in bass actually. They do get appreciably bassier when you get up close to them, but I frequently am surprised by what they put out when listening to bass-heavy tracks.

Interesting video. I have Dynaco a25s on stands in the bedroom. Both have Seas 10 inch woofers and 1.5 inch Seas tweeters. These speakers do not have a lower midrange peak to falsely sound like they reproduce a punchy bass like many other bookshelf speakers do. They may sound a bit shy on the bass, but when you feed them good low bass they will surprise you. I think you didn't feed them recordings that had good low bass. In fact, most people find the a25 put out too much bass when fed a quality recording especially when placed in a corner or on the floor. If the bass isn't in the recording, you won't hear it. Nice job with the video.

Really cool to see this kind of comparison, and yes, I did find it very surprising. I've compared the ML Motion 15s to the KEF 150s, and vastly preferred the former. The KEFs had bloated midrange and bass I had to tame, and ultimately ended up using the foam ports. I tried the KEFs on 3 separate amps, with and without a sub, and in 2 different rooms. With the ports, bass was anemic, and without it, bloated and unnatural. It had a very budget sound to them. I had to upgrade to the LS50s to get that refinement and balance I was looking for. I agree that the MLs also have anemic bass as they are designed for HT to be used with a sub as you said. But I never got that midrange coloration since I pair them with an REL sub.

One of my favorite songs for rockin' out is "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Blew out the woofers in the car stereo I had at the time when the drums do that Bip, Bam, Boom part. It went Bip, Bam, CRUNCH, crunch, crunch, buzz, buzz. Was just listening to The Best of Judas Priest Living after Midnight just the other day. Was at the local stereo shop here in town a couple of years ago listening to some soft jazz and classical music when a fellow walked in. He said he wanted to listen to something, but that I wouldn't like his music. I said, oh yeah? as I pulled out my limited edition White Zombie album and Black Sabbath's first album. Everyone thinks audiophiles only listen to soft jazz and vocals for some reason, not true.

I've spoken to Nelson Pass. Nakamichi licensed his stasis 1 topology and made products themselves based on that zero global feedback design. Incidentally, it wasn't a thermally stable design and was prone to oscillate under certain conditions. Modern speaker magnets and voice coils are immensely faster and more powerful than vintage.

I found the Dynaco a-25's to sound really good on a desktop in near-field. But, lacking bass, the Elac B6's were better up here. Then, I found a pair of ADS L810's and I was hooked for life! Incredibly accurate and with the perfect match between dome tweeters and mids. I still have them on the desktop, as they easily won the bookshelf shootout I performed. Finally, I found my holy grails; the L910's. The same mids/tweets as the L810's, but they sound bigger as they're in larger cabinets. And, the dual 10" bass drivers, built into their own separate bass cabinets really seal the deal. For me, they're the end-game loudspeakers I've always craved. Both the L810 and L910's are in the 93-94db efficiency range, so I'm presently looking for a Dynaco tube amp to power them, though they do love high current and the Adcom 555's bring that juice by the bucketload.

@trog69 4 жыл бұрын
@@MODAC I should add that the L810's are really much too large for a desktop. They're made to be placed on stands that lift them about 10" off the ground. They weigh 60lbs/each. The L910's are truly floorstanders though they also have large stands that lift them about 10" off the ground, though I haven't been able to get the original stands for the L810's, the L910's came with them, though I haven't gotten them up on the stands, yet. The L910's are about 100lbs/each. The ADS L-series is known for truly remarkable accuracy throughout the freq. spectrum. Sealed cabs provide exceptional bass response, though of course with less output than many ported speakers. Both the L810's and the L910's bass drivers, dual-8" on the 810's, and dual-10" on the L910's, are built in their own bass cabinets, which explains why they're so heavy and have such great bass.

Interesting. I tested both Martin Logan 35xti and Kef Q150, but I overwhelmingly preferred 35xti. Q150 sounded decent and smooth, but the vocal sounded like the vocalist was singing behind the band. Sounds of guitar, violin and cello was smooth and fascinating. In contrast, 35xti was much more detailed, realistic and airy. The vocal sounded like the vocalist was singing slightly in front of the band.

Nice review! I've heard the KEF, though, and did not think they had much bass? Whereas the Dynacos on a vintage Harman Kardon 430 do quite well in the lower registers, so I was, a little surprised there. The volume alone dwarfs the KEF bookies. Perhaps it's synergy with the Stasis gear?

I found the upper mids harsh and brittle to the point of being unlistenable on some recordings. Mine are fairly new and I hope the 70hr run in that is recommended will change that. How long have you had yours? Did their character and your opinion of them change over time? Would you recommend them overall? Like you I do think there are some good qualities about them. I once owned the Dynaco's back in 1975. I tried really hard to like them but to no avail. Maybe it was because my other speakers were Original Large Advent's which I dare say is NOT a fair comparison since the Advent's were an incredible value for the money. The Advent's definitely do not need a sub woofer as they go down deep in the bass. They were made to deliver much of the same performance as the once highly regarded AR3a at a fraction of the price. There is nothing made today that can deliver that degree of bass performance at such a low cost. I should add that I also once owned the Smaller Advent which I greatly preferred over the Dynaco's. I guess I'm just a fan of all things Henry Kloss.

What makes speakers so fascinating to me is how each one is so different from each other and for that reason I believe that the speakers have more to do with the sound of a given stereo system than any other component. If we can't agree which flavor of ice cream is best why would the choice of speakers be any different? There might be 28 flavors of ice cream & even more than 28 flavors of speakers & doesn't that mean there's a speaker for every taste?

I have two pair of large Advents one is an early version, the other is the later one with the rounded edges on the front of the cabinets. I also have AR-5's, Cizek model 1's, Avid 103's and Dynaco A-25's as well as others. (I admit I am a big AR and Dynaco fan) All of witch have equal or superior base than the advents. In the late 70's I was using the Large advents with a Dynaco Pat- 4 and ST-120. During this time a friend was pushing Cizek speakers on me and asked me to take them home and just try them. After comparing them to my Advents I bought the Cizeks and did not use the Advents for years. The Cizeks were that much better.

The A25s had many permutations of baffle layout and drivers. SEAS and Scan Speak woofers were used at different times, presumably manufactured to similar specifications. For many, including myself, they were an introduction to true hi-fi sound. Dynaco's electronics components were also outstanding.

I recently discovered your channel and like it because you are not a professional reviewer and because you review real world equipment under real world conditions. It was interesting to me that the Dynaco A-25s, a 1968 design, came in second and surpassed two much more recent designs. I think this was because of their smooth balance and natural tone. Paradigms are decent but I never cared for their woolly and overly warm bass. I agree with you about the upper midrange issues with the Martin-Logans. If the A25s were available today, I may well prefer them over many newer designs.

I'm somewhat less dumb now.) and also some typical pot and button problems. I don't want to abandon it even though it's been in it's box for almost 20 years. I'm currently using a Vincent SA-500 integrated amp with a tube front end.

Hi and best regards from Guadalajara, Mexico! So...what is a small room? My listening room is roughly 170 Sq. Ft. and I just traded my Elac debut 2.0 F6 towers for a pair of Kef’s Q350 (bigger brother of the pair you reviewed). Bottomline...I think I need to go smaller! I have to admit that my listening room has the worst acoustics. Tile floors, cement walls, large windows, but I can’t make major changes in consideration of my wife happines factor. Curious think, in the adjacent roon, I have a pair of Wharfedale Dimond 3 from the mid 80s. So...when I listen to these very small speakers with the effect of the subwoofer coming from my listening room, I get both clarity (these were best selling speakers) and a very deep and exact bass. Anyway, just wandering what do you consider to be a small room. Stay safe. Thank you. Great video.

Size is relative. I would say that a small room is generally like an ordinary spare bedroom or office/den. If you can’t add a rug, soft furniture or window treatments and the acoustics are really bad, maybe consider some nice headphones...?? Thanks

The only speaker from your list that I am personally familiar with are the Celestion 3s. I owned a pair over 30 years ago and I liked them. Very small, limited bass.

i have some KEF Q15.2... i think better bass (and front porter which i preffer) and smoother upper range, love the performance... it would be nice to have some vintage polk audio monitors to compare and other vintage speakers like sony's boombox speakers pioneer, etc
