I was lucky to see Steve Mariott with his band in the 198ties in Berlin. He was really one of the best singers I ever saw life - along with Chris Farlowe (Colosseum).

Brilliant song and performance. I understand the Small Faces often relied on their Mr. Nice to supply them with drugs, wisdom and encouragement to make their magic. Wonderful song and tribute to the Mr. Nice.

Best single by the band in my opinion because of intricate chord progressions. How this song was not banned by the BBC in June 1967! Maybe they did not know what 'speed' was. Probably thought it was all about a social worker lol.

And the beeb weren't wise to the nice giving them sweets.The beeb thot it was sweets from the big jar Soor plooms Cola cubes Sherbet lemons etc.Not purple Hearts,Black bombers Duraphen etc.And Seconal Nembutal,Tuinal,Seronal etc to bring or show you down and around.Its my 2nd best track from the small faces after Tin Soldier. How the 3 dead members died skint was very sad. That manager took everything from them and Kenney is or was the only one with a penny in his pocket coz he joined the who.As you know sir.But their music lives on and will never die. SF track after Tin Soldier.

@PIPEHEAD2 жыл бұрын
No, I'm afraid you're slightly off the beam there ! At the time this was written, you could get speed off any fat person you knew, it was prescribed for that, and basically you could get it anywhere. The Nice, I think you'll find, is about somebody with something that was a bit more difficult to get hold of - something you wouldn't get if you broke into a chemist's, shall we say ? Rock on, man !

This was the time (summer '67) when Small Faces released their first album on Immediate. An excellent collection of great songs which, in my view, has been completely under-rated. Compares well with "Ogden's", which usually gets all the plaudits.

I wonder if they ever opened for The Nice with Keith Emerson on Hammond Organ with knives? I also hear they had very poor management which kept all the money and paid them pocket money. The contracts these folks signed in those days were scandalous, it was like slave labour plus expenses, they’d turn up at gigs unable to buy a drink or a burger.
