Picture this: you're a 12 yr old kid from a conservative Catholic family visiting your 9 yr older brother at his college up north. As we drive down frat row, I hear music blasting from speaker turned towards the street and since they were on the 2nd floor the sound really filled the area. Itchykoo Park is playing. My mom was oblivious but I was absorbing every word from Steve Marriott!! Been a huge fan of Small Faces ever since, I am 69 yrs now!!

Listen to the Steve Marriott penned '30 days in the Hole' when he was in the supergroup Humble Pie. Nobody is a bigger fan than me, but the power of his voice, his superb harp, and the very naughty lyrics equal the brilliant Tin Soldier. I guarantee it will blow you away,

PP(Pat) Arnold has written "We were lovers at this time. I was the new black girl in town. I had soul, Steve had soul. It was natural we would connect. However, he wrote Tin Soldier for Jenny Rylance, she was the love of his life". PP is still a beautiful woman and has been very helpful to Steve's daughter Mollie. Mollie calls her her soul godmother.

I had the great fortune to meet Steve at a party in London around '77. He'd pretty well gone off the boil by then but he was still able to hold the room and spoke fondly of his earlier musical times. He loved that my sister and I were great fans and gave us loads of his time and sang 'Shah La Lee' to us with his very bluesy voice. We really had a great laugh with him but then he was off to some other place and we never saw him again sadly. An unbelievable talent and a party that I'll ever forget.
@cindyfalstrom72312 жыл бұрын
Wow, lucky you. From what I have read and heard, it appears that Steve was usually charming and kind to fans and "regular" folks, but didn't have much tolerance for those in the music industry or sycophants who tried to suck up. Jerry said he could have a tongue like a viper! I'm sure that was an unforgettable experience.

2nd December 1967 is 55 years ago. I was 7yrs old in January 1968, when I walked near a neighbour's radio in their garage, I stopped 'frozen' transfixed. WTF was I listening to? The Radio DJ said it was a Band called SMALL FACES. I thought it was a very funny name (for anything) actually. I told my friend, in front of his father, who interjected, saying "yeah, they're a great new Band" After that, I became very interested in the Drumming in music. My first Kit was a 7-piece Ludwig (Sparkling Silver) Rock n Roll forever.

I have lived with Steve Marriott as my "hero" for 50 years ... God, he should and could have taken the world by storm (more than he did) with a voice that was never out of tune, never struggling. I was an 18 year old, still in basic training when I visited NYC over Xmas in 1971. While all my pals proceeded to rent a hotel room and some ladies of easy virtue, I walked down to the Village and found an all-night record store and spent my first month's pay on about 30 import albums that I'd heard of but never saw at any of the record stores in Anchorage, AK. Two of those were "Ogden's Nut..." and the "Autumn Stone." I'd had a copy of "There Are But 4 Small Faces" for two years but never realized how fantastic a band they were until hearing more of their records that had never been released in the States. Steve's gotta be one of the most dynamic performers ever and just watching this brings tears to my eyes. I'll forgive him for Humble Pie and just send my fervent guest fishes to wherever he may be! RIP oh great one, you are remembered!
@cindyfalstrom72312 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul for for comments and your service. Although I do love the "hits" from Small Faces, I agree that the true gems are on the albums Autumn Stone is one of my favorites - a true masterpiece IMO. They were a brilliant, creative and talented band. I too wish Steve hadn't left, however, I also loved Humble pie up to the album "Eat It". The early stuff (especially the blues/rock) was wonderful and Steve so soulful. Although others may disagree, I was not a fan of the "James Brown funky" period after 1973. Sadly, Steve's was having alot personal problems, and it showed in the quality of the music, I think. Small Faces are my favorite band, right behind the Beatles, though.....

@@cindyfalstrom7231 Hula Cindy! No need for the thanks though--I enlisted at 17 for the sole purpose of getting the GI Bill which I eventually rode to a doctorate in history and a chance to infect thousands with my "librul agenda" at a small liberal arts college. Teaching history also gave me an opportunity to interspace small "subsets" of music, art, and literature among the typical litany of dates, wars, and various Fredericks and Williams. One of the things I ALWAYS do every semester is play my classes the Small Faces version of Willie Dixon's "You Need Love" (which NO ONE in over 30 years of doing so has ever heard) and then seeing how they feel about that in comparison to another version (stolen, of course) by my least-favorite band of all-time. As for Humble Pie, I thought their first three albums were a bit too country and schizophrenic for my tastes, but really loved "Rock On" and then for a year or two totally enjoyed "Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore." Sadly, after Peter left the band (his first three albums of course are all pretty good), they descended into just another one of the too many"heavy/blooze/boogie" bands that made the "pre-punk" era such a drag for me and after purchasing "Smokin'," I got rid of that and all their others (although I kinda wish I'd kept "Rock On.") I hope you've seen the "Reeling in the Years" video of the Small Faces, which sadly doesn't have some of the great, non-lip-synched songs I've seen, but it does have them work their way through the 2nd side of "Ogden's...." in its entirety which is certainly worth the price of admission alone. Would you believe that I actually heard a DJ on an Anchorage, AK, radio station play "Mad John" one evening which evidently was the follow-up to "Itchycoo Park" and definitely went nowhere very quickly. By the way, Steve had to be one of the most dynamic on-stage performers I ever saw! He wielded that guitar which was almost as big as he was with a grace and humor that was totally infectious and by all rights they should have been as big in the States as they were in ol' Blighty! My very guest fishes to you!

@@ailurophile17 Delightful talking with you. I too have a love of history, in particular the London rock scene from the roots after WWII, through the swinging 60's, with all the different genres and styles, then losing interest around 1973 +/-. The amount of talent concentrated in that place and time astounds me. This is how I discovered the Small Faces. Growing up in the US, I wasn't familiar with them at the time, though I was a Humble Pie fan in high school. I respect your feelings about Humble Pie, but disagree - "Smokin" was my favorite album and my 2 favorite HP songs - "I Wonder" and You're So Good for Me" are on this album. Schizophrenic is an accurate description for their 1st 2 albums. When HP formed, they admired the "Band" and Traffic" and wanted something organic and bucolic sounding along with the rocker songs. Steve was dead set against being the front man as he was respectful that this was supposed to be Peter's band. Also Steve was traumatized by all the screaming grabbing teeny bopper fans and just wanted to stand in the back and play rhythm guitar, write a few songs and sing back up. They were very democratic in that everyone was expected to contribute songs they wrote and performed, even their little 16 yr old drummer Jerry Shirley. That is why some songs are much better than others, and it can sound a bit chaotic. By the 3rd album, the record execs and manager said enough, you have the best singer in rock, and you keep him in the back? So, Steve became lead singer/guitarist, Peter lead guitar, Greg bass, and Jerry drums and thigs got tighter and heavier and they became much more popular. You knw the rest, Peter felt he needed to go solo and was replaced by Clem who was less jazzy/rock and more blues/rock. I loved the mid 3 albums - Rock on, Fillmore and Smokin. After Smokin, Steve announced to the group that he was bored being an English rock singer and wanted to go back to his soul roots, with mixed results. Steve's vocal were always scorching, but as I said, though I own them, the latter albums are not my favorites. So glad you are exposing the yungsters to great classic rock and i particular, our favorite little band Small Faces - Cheers friend......

@@cindyfalstrom7231 Cindy (if I may be so presumptuous): Thanks for the detailed history lesson. I was quite aware of how influential (for better or worse) those first two albums by the Band were in England (the States as well), but I would have a hard time finding any that were able to integrate "Big Pink's" mythologized Americana into a proper English setting. I certainly am a devotee of the first four Fairport Convention albums for their ability to create an entirely new amalgam of both English folk and American "folk rock." Gosh, even the first two Brinsley Schwarz albums seem to get bogged down by their attempts at recreating what was unique about the compositional talents of Robbie, Garth, Levon, Rick and Richard. And come to think of it, even a decade later Graham Parker's fabulous "Rumour" felll prey to the same delusions. Oh, and although I really didn't much care for ANYTHING that was popular from about 1968 onward, I really did like Traffic, right up until they decided to have their shoot-out (evidently with marshmallows) at the noodle factory. Wotta snoozer that was! BUT... I actually liked the first two Spooky Tooth albums as well so I was already familiar with Greg Ridley. And get this: I might have been one of only a dozen Americans who had a copy of the Herd's "From the Underworld" so I was familiar with Mr. Frampton too. In truth, my real love was for the original Merseybeat artists, my faves being the Searchers and the Hollies. In the early 70's, I read a fanzine that talked about the "mod" scene in England and then went crazy finding records by the Creation, the Eyes, and most especially the fantastic Move! All those albums are never far from my turntable. Heck, I even loved the first two Argent albums before they turned into a boring bunch of ELP wannabes. But then pub rock came around and thankfully the Brinsley's "Nervous on the Road" the beyond fabulous Dr. Feelgood and Ducks Deluxe and all those guys led to Eddie & the Hot Rods and began the English punk scene which saved my world from being squeezed between the Scylla of James Taylor and the Charybdis of Deep Purple. So sorry for the tiresome tome here, but it's always nice to find someone with even semi-similar (and seminal too) interests. And then came the Ramones, Pistols, Clash, Elvis, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, the Pretenders, Holly & the Italians, Blondie, Television, the Buzzcocks, the Vibrators, Wire, and all that other stuff I play for my students who still come to class wearing their damn Pink Floyd t-shirts that I promise them will end up hurting them when it comes time to pass out the final grades! Hors d'oeuvre, Paul (a fan of the Bonzo Dog Band as well)

@@ailurophile17 Thank you SO much for the "tiresome tome", I enjoyed it thoroughly. I wish I could have had such an entertaining professor when I was in college. You must be very popular with the kids. I too, have few people in my circle of friends and family who share my interest in early, mostly British pop/rock. Mostly their eyes glaze over when I start blathering on about Small Faces, Yardbirds, Animals or another semi obscure band I love - the Easybeats. You stumped me with Brinsley Schwarz - never heard of him/them. I will make a point of looking him up, plus some of the other names I am not familiar with. I have of course heard Fairport Convention and mourn the early loss of the lovely Sandy Denny. This is where you and I part ways, slightly. Although I like some songs and artists, I am not a huge fan of folk/rock (feel the same way about most prog/rock, though gasp, I do love Pink Floyd LOL!). I love the blues - early stuff like Muddy, Billie Holliday, Etta James and soul artists like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, etc. Which, of course is why I love the early British blues/soul/rock bands and artists like Eric Burdon, early Yardbirds & Stones, EARLY Rod Stewart (loathe the later stuff) and ultimately, of course Steve Marriott, the greatest blues/soul rock singer of all - IMO. I stopped listening to commercial radio in the mid 70's and switched to a local alternative station, so am familiar with the punkish and later alternative artists. Recently, a friend sent me a link to a 90's artist that currently interests me due to the charisma of the frontman Jarvis Cocker/Pulp. Right now I am fascinated, but he may not have enough to hold my attention long. What do you think? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWnFqmNmeaycmpI Babies/Pulp. Love chatting with you...
