Steve Marriott's inspiration for writing this song came from "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" by Hans Christian Anderson. Steve was totally smitten with with Jenny Rylance who ironically was Rod Stewarts girlfriend (Rod replaced Steve when he quit to form Humble Pie). Jenny was 5 yrs older than Steve and only regarded him as a friend - ("I ain't no child, treat me like a man"). After 2 yrs, Jenny & Rod broke up and Steve aggressively wooed her and won her with this song. PP Arnold has written "Steve and I were lovers at the time, but he wrote Tin Soldier for Jenny Rylance. She was the love of his life". Jenny and Steve were married for 5 years before she left him due to his constant touring with Humble Pie, heavy cocaine addiction and erratic behavior. According to family and friends, Steve was devastated and never got over her for the rest of his life, even though he went on to marry twice more and have 4 children. Two more beautiful love songs Steve wrote for Jenny were "Afterglow (of your love)" and "The Autumn Stone" The drummer for Small Faces was Kenney Jones, who after Faces broke up, went on to replace Keith Moon in the Who when he sadly passed away. Small Faces were a perfect band. All four members were incredibly talented and they were a huge influence on future groups.

Great song from this Era. Written by, later to be Humble Pie's Steve Marriot. He wrote this song for one of the original Ikettes, PP Arnold but liked it so much he kept it for himself, lol. This song is very pop-rock with a bit of psychedelia thrown in too. Great for 1967, good today. They're English. Nothing to do with Vietnam, it's about getting into someone's head, not their body. About one of Marriot's early girlfriends 🙂

P P Arnold is singing backing vocals on this version. There is a live version from 1968 on KZbin with P P Arnold. There are also live versions by P P Arnold and her band from 2017. Great singer (as was Steve Marriott).

I mean, it was of it's time.'lazy Sunday Afternoon', 'Itchygoo Park'...they were all just pop songs of the day. Steve Marriott was having fun and finding his way. Forming Humble Pie with Peter Frampton and launching into hard rock was where Steve's vocal talents needed to be. 'Live at the Fillmore' is probably one of the best live albums of all time. My dad and Steve's dad Bill were good mates. They lived a few a streets away from us in Manor Park London E12. One of my best ever weekends was watching West Ham at home one Saturday afternoon, seeing Humble Pie play down the road from the stadium in East Ham in the evening, and then on Sunday lunchtime going to my dad's drinking club and Bill Marriott bringing Steve in with him! Home win, watch your heroes, and then meet your hero. Steve was as good as gold. Bit hungover and didn't stay more than an hour. But for me it was East End nirvana..........

When Steve Marriott left, he was replaced by Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. Then they dropped “Small” and became Faces.
@Darrenski Жыл бұрын
Yeah, when he left they had to recruit two other guys just to fill the void he left and they didn't come close.

Under-rated 60s band, but the only one name checked by The Byrds when they visited London for the first time and sang about it in Eight Miles high "Rain gray town, known for its sound, In places, small faces unbound"

Small faces comes from them all being short, steve was like 5' 0" and the faces part was london slang, if you were a face you were someone to be seen

It looked like you were enjoying the drumming. Kenny Jones took over the drums in The Who after Keith Moon's death and it is easy to see (and hear) why - a similar "controlled chaos" technique. Steve Marriott was one of the UK's greatest blues and rock singers.

really cool. love the old school psychedelic vibe. feels like it would go well with The Byrds. i had never heard this before, never heard of the band -- or of the later version of the band with Rod Stewart either. fun stuff, y'all. thanks for doing this.

5:46 Try the studio version of I've got mine (not the version included in a cheesy 60s movie thats on KZbin) and the instrumental title track off ogdens. If you're a video gamer you'll know it from the GTA V trailor (I think it was 5 anyway).

@MindFeather I'm not a video gamer either, this was knowledge I got from my 'cooler' kids : ) chess is my game. Its just that whenever I play the instrumental off ogdens nut gone flake (the track has the same title) they always say 'oh cool this is the GTA tune'.

Also listen to 'you need loving', if you've heard anything of led zeppelin you'll instantly recognise it. Steve was Page's first choice for his then new band but he turned it down. The lyrics are almost word for word the same as whole lotta love, right down to the last line, delivered exactly as Steve does. I used to think led zeppelin were a very original band. When my dad made me aware of the SF in the late 70s I realised how derivative they were. Plant bases his entire delivery on Steve Marriot. They didn't even credit you need loving on whole lotta love, which imo is pretty low. Anyone with ears can hear it. In today's courts I'm sure he could have made a big claim for that. Steve was ripped off by management all throughout his career, but when other musicians are doing it as well. That must have really stung him.

Brilliant band,the first album with Rod Stewart was originally labeled as Small Faces before later issues just showed Faces,for some,myself included,considered the greatest rock band around for an all too short time before Woody joined the Stones & Stewart became 'Hollywood'
