Hey Mark, as someone who is right behind you in this farming deal. I agree with everything you said. I would have bought more goats earlier and I would have got a few steers to top out the first couple of years to generate cash flow! Folks he is 100% correct!

As always, very helpful! Thanks, brother! “This is where everything is heading. This is the ultimate purpose of God in creation - a Christ-ransomed people with everlasting joy on their heads, sorrow and sighing gone, all creation transformed and applauding the work of God. Joy is the ultimate goal of God in creation. - John Piper”

Thank your so much for your advice regarding the livestock. Having recently retired with more time now and several acres of land, I have wanted to get my property prepaired for a small herd of cattle. I had wanted to begain a cow/calf program. But recently, I have really been considering a stocker program with steers. Your advice today is helping me to consider that option even more. However, like you, I pastor a church with many demands. But, my ministry is a calling from The Lord that I get great satisfaction and blessings from. I always find peace from your encouragement to others to keep The Lord first and foremost in their daily lives. Please continue to keep us updated with your programs and advice. God bless you and your family!

LOL, I was just telling myself this the other day bc of the small amount of land we have. "I should've just started with goats or sheep", but man they just don't seem as exciting as cows.

Jordan Green (aka "Farmbuilder") said you need to have like 50 sets to make cow/calf pencil out.

Something to think about, if you waited until spring to buy, those cows would have cost more. Probably not as much as your winter hay bill tho.
@puresouthpasturesfarm64602 ай бұрын
Yes! That’s true too. I bought from an individual off their farm. Could have possibly paid deposit and had them hold through the winter. 🤷🏼♂️. Oh well. We learned a lot that first winter. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Wait....a May fly in February? Say it isn't so. Seriously though, if starting out with sheep, would you suggest buying a sheep dog like Knox at the same time as purchasing your starter heard?
@puresouthpasturesfarm64605 ай бұрын
😂. That’s funny! Yes! I had sheep for a few weeks before we got Knox and I was a nervous wreck. They are helpless to defend themselves and our predator load is heavy. I kept them close to the barn… but you can only do that for so long before running out of forage. Then you have the time it takes to get the dog bonded to the sheep and adapted to a new farm. We went round and round on that. (I made some videos) All that to say, the earlier you can get a dog with the sheep, the better. What would be ideal is if the sheep came with a dog they had already been with. Then it’s just getting them adjusted to a new location. I will be trying to stagger younger dogs alongside the older so that as the old dogs phase out, or if someone has an unforeseen issue, we won’t be without backup. And the older should help train the younger That’s my novel for tonight😂

New submersible to your channel. Thanks for all the information. If i may ask a question have you ever dragged your paddocks after a move to break over the weeds and smear the patties for less fly and health issues or is it a overrated endeavor? Thanks
@puresouthpasturesfarm64605 ай бұрын
Hey Big -d! Thanks for the sub! I’ve never used a drag but I could see how it might be effective. I saw some content by Heifer USA that was talking about that. One thing that is helping us here, is our dung beetle population is making a strong comeback! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
