Here is a video all about the small flat rides I use to play quiet gigs. Included in this group is the famous Chick Corea Cymbal that was given to him by Roy Haynes. This is the cymbal that was used on the Chick recordings, Now He Sings Now He Sobs, Light as a Feather and other Circle and Origin recordings.
The kit I am using is a Gretsch Catalina Elite set from the early 1990's. I use this as my portable practice kit.
The sizes are:
16" BD, 12" and 14" toms and a Slingerland Brass 12" x 6.5 " snare.
The cymbals are a Paiste 16" Sound Creation Dark Flat Ride, a Paiste 18" 602 from the late 1960's (in the video I mistakenly call it a 16") and a Paiste Traditional Flat ride from the early 2000's.
The Hi Hats are Sabian HH 13"
I am using 2 Sennheiser MKH 80 Microphones for overheads and a AKG D112 on the Bass Drum

'Now he sings, now he sobs' was the first 'jazz' album I ever bought. Picked totally randomly from the shelf at the record store. I didn't understand it as it was completely different than what I was expecting, even though I had no idea what to expect. I had to listen to it for a while before I started to understand it...but it sure grew on me quickly...as quickly as Roy kissed that beautiful flat ride with his graceful stick work. My favorite drummer and favorite album, period!

I had a teacher lend me an amazing flat ride of his when I was first taking up Jazz. It was very motivating to be able to cut my teeth on such a forgiving cymbal, it helped me through the growing pains quite a bit. Helped me to really learn to play music on the ride, and it helped me survive being terrible...heh. I think I got through my Jazz infancy on the back of that flat ride. I think it was a brilliant move on my teacher to let my teenage self take that home for a couple of months and figure things out.

I’ve recently happened upon your channel Rick - really enjoy your approach. The 602 really shines when you play it in the Roy Haynes style. I also really like the lack of wash that I hear in all the flat rides. The fan cymbal adds such a wonderful sonic texture.

Totally agree with you on Roy being the greatest jazz drummer ever. Got an 18" 602 flat from the 60's and it blows my mind every time I play it. Great vid and greetings from Wilmington, NC!

So glad I found your channel, love your content, keep it coming! I got one of those paiste traditional flat rides probably in 2009 or 2010, it's simply one of the best flat rides I've ever heard in my life and it's one of my favorite jazz cymbals that I own. As you say, it really blends nicely with the group for more contemporary smaller combo playing.

You are an awesome drummer. Really glad I found your channel. I recently bought a used Stagg 20” flat ride for about $50. I was just curious, but I really love it. Looking forward to learning more about these cymbals.

I used to own an 18" 602 flat like that. I'm still kicking myself for selling it. I recently got my hands on a beautiful sounding Sabian 21" Limited Edition Weckl Serenity Flat Ride. I'm loving it. It's thinner and slightly larger than any flat ride I've ever owned, and it has an interesting and somewhat trashy crash to it. Bass players love it.

I saw Roy at Yoshi's in Oakland CA. He was feeling uncomfortable on the house kit (he sounded great) He had obvious brought his own cymbals. He apologized for not sounding like himself - he tapped the drums, then the flat ride and said "this isn't haynes, THIS is haynes"

I've owned a 60's Paiste 18" flat ride, a Bosphorus 22" flat ride, and a Saluda 20" flat ride. I've loved them all. The Saluda is the darkest sounding.

I've played a couple of flats including 602s, 2002s or Istanbuls. The one I liked the most was a 18" Sabian Ed Thigpen Crystal ride. A guy I play with owns one. He used to bring it to rehearsals, wanting me to play it. After I told him the story about Chick Corea doing the exact same thing, my friend stopped bringing his. I guess he felt like copying Chick.. :D If you ever come across one of these rides, grab it! Those are really special!

Hi Malte I have one that Ed gave me when I did a recording session with him. www.acousticbarn.com/rickspercussionsite/drumphotos/edthigpenLRG.jpg I will do a video on it at some point. Great cymbal and different than anything out there.

Hello Rick, Owning one of these and being given it by the master himself must be something special! It’s even difficult to say what exacly makes that ride so distinct. Trying to, I’d say it’s its fine complexity in conjunction with clarity. I’m exited to see what you have to say about it! Thanks for your videos and all the best!

I have the new 602 Medium Flat ride 20”. I don’t play jazz. I can’t swing a bat. But I can funk and play with acoustic piano and sax when I can. It’s just unreal. I’m an old basher that wanted to play soft and Masters and 602 are so nice.

I love my flat - a 22" Agop Signature, so polar opposite from any of these. I'd still like to find a 20" (or 19) that's more of a traditional style, with a couple of rivets... don't get me started on the Constantinople that I missed out on.

@rickdior Rick, those are some sweet flat pies you have there. :) Legendary. And you play them well. Hmmm...by chance did you ever gig during the mid-'80s at the Catalina Club in L.A.? I use to go see Dizzie and heaps of other cats there up until its doors closed. Nice, small, intimate club. Sad day. :( Anyway...thanks for the upload. Will have to check your other flats video. Cheers.
