I'm always so happy when there's a new video! Let me tell you, Charles, your no dig approach has me producing enough food for myself for a year, with very little "work"! So thankful I found your channel 5 years ago before I started gardening in my new yard! This method is so great and since there is no damage to the underlying ground, it's easy to rearrange where my gardens are and to build new ones, year after year. On indeterminant varieties, depending on conditions like spacing he does not remove suckers and cuts back the top that won't get ripe tomatoes before end of season. 2.) Our beets usually are disappointing. Carrots are hit and miss. I try to keep them watered well, but wonder if it’s a boron issue. Too cheap to get soil test so will try to rig up irrigation and do a test. I believe the nutrients are covered but if they run on dry side I suppose they can’t take it up. Our springs seem to be too hot. With in ground rows it helps to dig a 3-4” trench around edge to prevent lawn from creeping in.

I have a soft spot for dandelions because I have so few early flowers in my garden right now, so this year I kind of left some and dead-headed & thinned them like I would a garden flower. I learned man do they make excellent slug habitat! Something about the way that basal rosette hugs the ground, completely blocking out light and making it super wet underneath; I swear I found a slug under every single one I removed this year! And the slugs love to crawl up the stems at night to eat the flowers. It seems hard (especially in places where this is a native wildflower) to balance habitat vs pest harborage 😢.

I was rewatching the Small Garden playlist this week and appreciate the latest update. I love to see how everything is growing and also how you deal with any problems that arise. I learn just as much from what hasn’t been working as from the successful plantings. Your videos and books have helped me understand the rhythm of the growing season better. Today I harvested a spring variety of Korean radish and had green bean seedlings ready to plant! They were a little more spicy than the ones I harvested in the fall, probably because of the crazy blast of hot weather last week. A few had started to send up a flower stem. But still made delicious kimchi.

Edging shears are great and we used them at all our clients gardens after mowing for a smart finish. However we established something like a ditch in the soil of the beds and birders next to the grass, so grass grew out kind of sideways, and you didn’t cut into soil with the edging shears. Then all we had to do was zoom round with a hoe after to lose the clippings in the soil.

My basil has been disappointing and the aphids have eating it mostly. My allotment is looking good. Im holding back planting anymore seed till ive planted all my squash curcubits out. Which i have done now. Ive sown more sunflowers and really want some january king 3 plants so need to plant some of them. Hi Charles, go to your nearby sheep farmer and ask for some fleece after they shear the sheep... take it and fluff it out a bit and circle pieces around your small starts to keep slugs away... slugs do not want to go over hairy things.... and the sheep wool is biodegradable plus you are helping your sheep farmer put excess sheeps wool to good use!

My young carrot seedlings were mostly destroyed by slugs. With your carrots under fleece, wouldn’t it make slugs more welcoming? How did you keep the carrots safe? I reseeded the gaps caused by slugs and called it succession planting.
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Yes, succeed with succession! I did nothing at all to protect them or I would've mentioned that. As I said, I'm almost surprised and attribute it to the no dig soil environment having a good balance of slug predators such as beetles

Second year using no dig practice and I made a mistake building by latest bed. Now I have a few pesky weeds popping up in the middle of my garden. How do you recommend fixing areas where the cardboard didn’t stop the weeds? I’m thinking of excavating the area down to the cardboard and laying some new cardboard down. Hopefully that works.
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
That is normal if the weed roots are strong and I find that it's a lot easier and quicker to keep removing the regrowth. Over time and depending on what the weeds are, the deeper roots run out of juice and stop growing. Just keep at it, little and often, much better for everything then digging out and starting again
@apost099 Жыл бұрын
@@CharlesDowding1nodig I built the bed about a month ago. My worry with digging out the weeds is that I will punch through the existing cardboard and make the situation worse.
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
You remove the weed regrowth by removing only the top growth, above the original soil level, so you are not puncturing the cardboard

Here in the grim wastelands of the North I've got actual pea pods on the plants (started in the PT in Feb), I planted a whole packet of 3yr old PSB seeds as a test in your 60 modules and every one germinated so I planted them out, 40 odd were taken by the rabbits in the first night. Oddly they left the lettuce and beetroot. Salsify are sprouting haphazardly, Cutworms have taken many plants so far, but I grew plenty to replace them, carrots doing well, as are Caulis and Kohl. First time for Cucamelons and they're very slow after germination for some reason.

Ahhh, grim wastelands, sounds like you are going well!

Charles, I understand you don’t fertilizer’s and your “dirt” is fertile, but have you ever had it tested for nutritional value? I only fertilize my fruit trees but I do add “A to Azomite” minerals back in my soil. I wouldn’t believe that “composting” would create /build up minerals in the soil. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

It's a good question Mike, But I am suspicious of tests which can only evaluate what they look for and what's there, as opposed to evaluating the processes and interactions, including the biological part. I am using my plants as the test. There may be cases where some amendments are needed.

I've never seen you talk about corn. If you do mainly salad crops, growing baby corn would be nice...plain or pickled.

I grew it last year and was not impressed, a lot of space and work for not much harvest

I use blue water pipe to help cover crops yet I like that metal wire. Trying to find some cheap online in the UK. How thick should it be? 3 - 4mm?
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Yes 4mm, is not cheap but lasts a long time

Great video.Any ideas why carrot germination has been so bad for me this year? Its been weeks and hardly a thing showing? I also lost all my brassicas - every one! I have replanted though and put beetroot round the edges and thistle leaves and eggshell all over the place! (I had used leaves as a mulch for the bay - wouldn't recommend that!!)
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it's slugs. Look very closely and you often can see tiny green stones which is all that remains. If it's drier now, you have a chance at least

Been a similar winter/spring here in Somerset, Nova Scotia but much colder. We use fleece and plastic which really helps with the kale regrowth from winter as well as the newly planted spinach, onions, carrots and lettuce. We are in a rush to grow and preserve as much as possible this year as grocery foods are tasting worse and prices keep getting higher 😳. Fleece is incredible and we found acres of the stuff when we moved to this old 1800’s farm 2 years ago. Very grateful and thoroughly enjoyed your video Charles.

Is it that the fleece keeps the wind off? There is no heat advantage.

Sounds amazing and I so agree!

Both!!
@spoolsandbobbins Жыл бұрын
@@FireflyOnTheMoon it does keep some warmth in and using it together with plastic is even better. We mostly use it against the wind and pests though. We wouldn’t grow much here without it.

Edging the garden is the bain of my life. My garden is surrounded by kaikoura grass which spreads incredibly quickly. Do you have any tips to deal with that? Thanks.

I bought Sungold Select II seeds from Baker Creek. They usually do heirloom seeds. it says they are orange and will occasionally produce a red tomato but they are a selection from the regular Sungold by Reinhard Kraft. I'm wondering how close to the original they will be. I've never grown the original. This was my first attempt to find it.
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
That's interesting and good luck. I've tried a few such attempts to replicate the original and have so far been disappointed with harvest. I hope yours is close to the real thing!

My problem is sourcing enough 'topping'. i use our own horse muck which i collect but the huge problem is they are fed on a lot of hay & I get lots of weeds.

I live your small garden how big is it and how much compost did you need?

Have you ever experienced trouble from ants in the garden? Next to the aphids they maintain, ive had them kill/uproot tiny spinach plants this year. They seem to be makin nest entries right where the seedlings are growing, causing the root to die? Im not sure, but nearly all of them have died by now
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Sounds bad and I have a few nests, giving water helps keep them at bay

Hello, I just learned about your work and looking forward to following your methods. However, I read some amazon reviews and many people find it difficult to follow your methods. Can you just do 1, 2, 3 steps. Simple, straight to the point? Please?
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Thanks, and sorry to hear that, I wonder why. It depends what you are starting with. If there are many weeds it's worth laying cardboard on them, then about 4 inches compost on top. Keep removing any perennial weeds which emerge, after the cardboard decomposes within about eight weeks. Compost can be anything decomposed and need not be perfectly fine. You still need to pull weeds but it's easier when they are growing in compost. Annual maintenance is another inch also on top of decent quality compost.
