A recent study Jason Hawes and Benjamin Goldstein for the University of Michigan and published in Nature Cities Journal claims that urban farming and small scale gardens have a carbon footprint that is 6x larger than conventional farms… but is that conclusive? This has been a VERY hot topic in the homesteading communities online… so let’s dive in and see what’s REALLY going on.
Here's the study:

There is no defense for his twisted fiction. Big farms have diesel tractors that have a carbon footprint and small farms don't. Small gardens don't use a lot of chemicals that are carbon based. Small gardens absorb carbon, not produce it.

Well, not quite. Yes, the global warming hypothesis is junk science wrapped in fraud. However, gardens are part of the carbon cycle, so they trap carbon for a very, very short amount of time before releasing it back into the next stage of the cycle. This is also why planting trees doesn't work well. Yes, they sequester carbon for a while, but they release it back when they die. Gardening that uses artificial fertilizers takes carbon that has been trapped for millions of years as natural gas and uses it as N-based fertilizer, so it adds to the net CO2. That, however, is a GOOD thing. Earth's CO2 has been sequestered by shellfish for millions of years, trapping it as CaCO3 (limestone), coal, and oil. Humans are restoring the natural balance by putting the CO2 back into the carbon cycle by building roads, burning coal, and pumping oil. The plants love it! For a variety of reasons that would take a chapter to explain, CO2 does not drive earth's climate, but it does drive life.

Climate change is all about government collusion with corporations. Government gets the control, and the corporations get the money. Almost all the "research" is funded by grants looking for the "correct" results, so we get one conclusion: The earth is getting hotter due to humans. The raw temperature data (not NOAA's adjusted data), sea ice extents, and tide gauges show this is a lie. It's politics, not science.

I see your point but not all use a bunch of chemicals and that tractor covers an area that produces 1000's of plants where most home ones have like 10 of each type. T think the real test is the carbon footprint in reference to the carbon footprint that is reduced do the the plants. To me it is more of the square area vs # of plants in the area. If the home garden is reusing there stuff then the carbon footprint should be min. So then there is the square foot vs number of plants vs length of time in years. Then there would be a more proper study. Thoughts??

@@SilverScorpion Around here (eastern Idaho) all of the farms use chemicals, sad but true. Most are trying to move away from the toxic ones and they put down cow manure before they plant, but they still spray fertilizer during the growing season. A lot even do crop dusting and that's a big footprint. a lot of the home gardeners in our small city (just about everyone) get a trailer load of manure from the dairy up the road once every two or three years. That three mile round trip in not much of a footprint. naturally big and healthy plants draw more CO2 out of the air than those on chemical steroid fertilizers. Some big farmers are selling off the unused parts of the plants for use as fuel in electric power plants and that is another footprint, whereas home gardeners compost the plants back into the soil where the CO2 is processed by mother nature for soil building.

Thank you for commenting on this "research". It's interesting there are no widely publicized articles about the waste of resources or "carbon footprint" secondary to carefully tended urban yards with the constant mowing and watering of the huge corporate green "yards" requiring similar maintenance on a much larger scale. Small family gardens provide "cleaner" food than most fresh produce found in grocery stores, and at a fraction of the cost. Thank you again.

I read that article too. Such a small sample. How many home gardeners have greenhouses or use motorized tools as was discussed in the article? What about pollution from factory farms as compared to an organic garden? I am suspicious about the funding for this. Somewhere I suspect factory farms had a financial input in this study.

Yep. It’s definitely suspect. The primary author seems like he is not against small farms/gardens, but I am concerned about sample size for sure. You just can’t draw conclusions from 73 gardens. How many practice permaculture? I feel strongly that a small farm or urban garden that uses permaculture and sustainable gardening easily is better for the planet than a Big Ag farm that uses monocropping and cropdusting with chems

I heard about the article too. A lot of it seemed to come down to the idea that if each small garden needs (for example) a shovel, a larger parcel 10 times the size, would still only need one shovel, so only use 1/10th of a shovel would be utilized per unit area. Essentially it was an economy of scale argument. I think the take home was that if one enjoys gardening as a hobby, but want to reduce one's carbon footprint, that individual should consider taking up online gaming instead. Online gaming requires zero shovels. ;)

Any gardening in soil that was already productive would at best be CO2 neutral, and likely would be less of a CO2 sink that just letting cropland go to weeds. But I would tend to think that people should look less at gardening as CO2 sequestration and more at it as a way of growing food... although that said, many of my best garden crops are the wild edible weeds that I didn't even plant. So for me, my garden is a quasi garden/fallow plot each year with all the weeds I grow. ;)@@no_name4aday

These people are absolutely insane. I went to university for environmental science and back between 2007-2013 when I went to school they said conventional farming was the worst for the environment and has a higher carbon footprint and that it was best to buy local, grow local … nothing is following the philosophy of science anymore… nothing is following scientific ethics! I’m so glad you’re well versed in this… sample size is important, repeatability is key … people should be able to repeat this experience and get similar results to say that the research is true …

yep. A sample size of 70 or so is WAY to small to publish conclusive results. You need like 7000. If only 5 of those gardens didn't know what they were doing and were being stupid and wasteful it drastically skews the results.

*as a farmer* (not crops ) farms regardless if for meat or crops are very regulated, require certifications and reporting each year which could be the reasoning behind the outcome, as we are required to be in a certain range. This report is probably just a way to most likely start charging (eventually, I’m very untrusting lol) a gardener that may have more than just a couple of regular flower beds, such as green houses, etc. A lot of crop farmers have moved to no till to create a healthier soil. A lot of tasteless fruits & veggies are caused (in my opinion) by picking them too early for store sale. Not saying that it isn’t from soil, pesticides, etc. however in the past 25 years the government has found ways to make money and certain groups have found ways to make money from the woke and then they collide in reports that are sometimes (in my opinion) fear mongering or onesided. When I looked at this I am wondering what year they started tracking urban farming (it may have said but I am a chronic skimmer), what baseline are they using for that, does run off from cars and rainwater from buildings affect that? I wouldn’t be surprised if cities/towns start finding a way to tax the practice or over regulate, not so much to keep people from doing it but to fit into the quota they have to fit into for EPA/environmental rules and if they can’t, will it be banned in some areas all together? I love the idea or urban farming even if it’s something the town/city workers manage just to help supply food to the homeless but also to create community and in a prepping community some allies. 🙂

A tasteless tomato 🍅 can be grown in any soil or farming system by simply over watering. I had wonderful tomatoes in a high tunnel but forgot to turn off the irrigation water one day, next morning it was swampy. We picked tasteless tomatoes for 10 days, and then they began tasting good again. I assume excessive moisture just dilutes everything too much.

Yeah, we small gardeners are responsible for dumping thousands of tons of toxic chemicals into the ground and aquifer on a daily basis (or is that agribusiness? hmmm...). We make that carbon footprint even larger with transportation to the processing plant, running the plant, making and using chemicals for preservation, transportation to the warehouse, transportation to the distribution center, transportation to the stores, and so much more. I think about this when I walk out to my garden and eat a fresh tomato off the vine or an apple off the tree. If you look up the addresses of Jason Hawes and Benjamin Goldstein, you will notice that they live in Fantasyland. I have been growing stuff for 60 years and will stop planting when they plant me. The big difference is that our planet had no problem supporting 3 billion people, it cannot support 8+ billion.

After you establish all the garden infrastructure by year 3, then are you not in the same category as long-term farms? In year 4, perhaps the carbon foot print could be substantially less, depending on what metrics they are using. No infrastructure, no transportation, more appropriate watering practices, seed saving, more nutrition, appropriate pest control. Good video, thanks

If there was many acres of wooded land that had to be cleared just to turn it into a field to grow crops, what would the carbon footprint be for that? Hello sarge I heard this from other Canadian garden channel. My thoughts on this. Needs more data points from every single country across all walks of life. The whole cycle (production, manufacturing and transportation of resources and food ) needs to be considered imo. Where are the fertile resources coming from driving to get soil or chop and dropped in. Fertilizer ( nitrous oxide)leaching out from the systems? Where is the water coming from pumped from aquifers or hand watered from rain water? Are trees removed to farm or grasslands (converted lawns)? How much of the food is wasted? Looking beyond just the CaRbon but the whole cycle. Every single thing may have footprint but some things significantly reduce it. Take CaRe

This paper is complete BS. My entire garden uses ZERO fertilizer, ZERO fuel based tillage, ZERO purchased infrastructure. Half the fun is taking found materials and repurposing to garden uses.

There is nothing wrong with carbon dioxide, it is not a pollutant. It is the lifeblood of plants. If we think there is too much carbon (there's not) we should simply plant more trees.

Well, we definitely should be planting more trees

The Biden admin yesterday referenced this study, indicating that they may need to look at the impact of small gardens on the environment. They seem to have an agenda.

I think you're missing the point entirely. This is not about reducing carbon. It is about they're desire to cintrol food. The do not want you eating unless they say so.

Great video on line called CO2 The Gas Of Life. The assumption that carbon dioxide or carbon in general is toxic is absolutely wrong. We are carbon based life forms, (even kids watching Star Trek know that). Imagine the lush beauty of the Earth when dinosaurs roamed. The less carbon dioxide there is the less oxygen there is, and the fewer people, plants, and animals there will be. Do you really think that's better? Or do you think the WEF is conning us ...again?

thanks for watching. My thoughts on this are complicated. I think in general the Earth would benefit from more trees, less people.... but none of us are going to volunteer to be culled right? So we have to live in some kind of harmony with nature, but we also aren't about to give up modern technology like cars, planes etc. What are your thoughts on permaculture? To me, that is our best chance to achieve some kind of balance between modern humanity and the other species we share the planet with

Trees are good but overrated, much of the earth is better suited to grasslands.

So now it is just a matter of time until John Kerry and the World Economic Forum (WEF), 2030, come for our home gardens. Not a big surprise! It is all about control. 😢

We only had to jobs folks take care of each other so that we could take care of the garden that takes care of us. If you grow the soil and help mother earth heal. It does not matter what you throw in that soil it will grow. The problem is everybody thinks they have to farm a product except for the soil. That's why we're desertifying the entire planet Earth

I think for generations people did not understand that the soil is a resource that must be replenished, just like any other resource. Now we have to play “catchup” and help people understand why regenerative agriculture (permaculture) is the sustainable future we need to feed the planet
