Go in and put the fire out.
On October 25th, 2019, Stockton Firefighters responded to reports of a fire on Yosemite cross of Sonora. Engine 2, Battalion 1, and Operator 1 responded from down the street- and arrived on scene quickly of a single story, single family dwelling with heavy fire showing out back windows on the Delta side of the structure. Engine 2 gives a radio size-up and goes to work. Battalion 1 is immediately behind and assumes Command. Operator 1 is a clerical position responsible for the day-to-day staffing of the department (as well as dozens of other tasks); and is in charge of Accountability on fires as well as filling other non-IDHL ICS roles.
Firefighters worked quickly to knock the fire down and search the house for any trapped or downed citizens. Crews found no one in the house, and turned their efforts to extinguishing the fire that had extended into the attic space. Truck crews arrived on scene and provided vertical ventilation. Firefighters transitioned into overhaul to ensure all burning materials were thoroughly extinguished. No injuries were reported.
The fire was put 'under control' within 12 minutes- from the first 9-1-1 call to the blaze being 'knocked down' (this includes alerting and responding time). Stockton Firefighters believe that a contained, uninterrupted fire has the potential to double in size every 60 seconds. We believe that an aggressive interior attack is the best chance to save life and property.
FYI about this particular video: On the only day this year, Engine 2 happen to have a four person staffed Engine due to a training opportunity for a 'junior operator.' Upon arriving on scene, the four person crew work incredibly efficiently to advance hose into the fire and extinguish the blaze. (This was a glorious throw-back to before staffing-cuts in 2011, when all Stockton Fire Engines were staffed with four). Due to the fire's location close to the firehouse, Engine 2 was on scene for minutes 'alone' before other apparatus arrived- which is not usually the case. Despite being on scene as the only Engine, the crew was able to work extremely efficiently and put the fire out as other units arrived. It happen to also be the first 48 hour set that a previously seasoned Engineer was riding as a newly-promoted Captain. His first size-up is cool, calm, and collected. Well done.
We thank you for your views, support, feedback, and comments. Comments that contain profanity, incite controversy, or are intended to 'troll' will be deleted. We can not express enough that this video is intended to educate the public on what Stockton Firefighters must encounter- not host a platform for people to argue about personal issues or the fire service. We reserve the right to delete comments as we see fit.
The Stockton Fire Department consists of 12 firehouses that protect 350,000 people. Stockton Firefighters are on pace to respond to 53,000 emergencies in 2019. This includes an average of at least one working structure fire a day.
We are proud to serve and protect the citizens and City of Stockton, California.

SWEET.... Its sad that politicians decreased companies size down to 3 ! This is a prime example of why 4 FF ‘s should be the standard. The first due Engine was amazing , without communication they pro actively anticipated needs and made them happen ie Attic Ladder , Water Supply and humping hose on the porch. Congratulations to the “ new “ Captain and to the two “ probies “.

Okay, I'm an observer, not an operator, but; for the vent crew, two inquiries: 1) Good that the saw started, but I've heard it's better to start on the ground and carry (idle) running. 2) Is traversing the roof without sounding a reasonably acceptable procedure. I realize I sound like armchair firefighting, but I'm honestly curious regarding the significance of what I've read in the past.

An idea to kick around - getting onto a ladder in roof access can be clumsy and awkward swinging a leg around a ladder that can slide laterally when weight is transferred onto it or when fully extended and nothing to hang onto with the top rung at the roof line. This can be a bit daunting if the roof has a steep pitch and footing is borderline secure. If I had a bit of free time at the station house, I'd be working to create a ladder with snap in extensions to both side rails on the fly section of about 3' - 4' so that the vent crew can back onto the first step between handholds on both sides. I've used such a system and the increase in security and confidence in getting off the roof in both a routine manner and in a hurry is pretty dang high.
