Lovely little paintings, I don't live in a city but will try your idea of splitting up a board with tape. Nice video.

Thanks! Splitting up the board is a good way to make the most of a panel.

Beautiful little snapshots. I love this idea because it must really help in not getting too precious about them. I think those trees look like London plane trees. I sketched some in Cavendish Square (off Oxford Street) a while back, and I read that plane trees were introduced here because they’re very good at coping in polluted atmospheres and purifying the air.
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80073 жыл бұрын
It really is a good way to break the scene down into its most simple shapes, and not get to specific about anything. Nate here, you are right about the trees, and thanks for the info on why they were planted. Fascinating!
@carolinegreene3723 жыл бұрын
@@paintingwithlindseyandnate8007 hi Nate, the sign in the Square says they were introduced to London in the 1600's because of their ability to thrive in polluted atmospheres, though it’s hard to imagine the pollution levels being that bad then (maybe they were worse, who knows)! I think it states that they were brought over from France. Good to see the weather forecast is looking hopeful for warmer plein air days from Monday!
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80073 жыл бұрын
They were burning a lot of coal back then so I’m sure it was very polluted. Could you imagine London in the winter with a thick layer of coal smoke in the air? Yikes! Isn’t that what happened in the 50’s when that deadly fog hit London and killed a bunch of people? I might have my stories confused. Either way I am glad they planted these plane trees because I absolutely love them and can’t wait until spring!

The third one from both of you really stood out. Guess I'm a sucker for that golden light.
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80074 жыл бұрын
I think the third one turned out the best as well. It was certainly the most action packed location! Lindsey was practically in the middle of the road, and the sidewalk was heavily traveled by pedestrians so there was lots of talking and explaining going on.

Most definitely modern and historical English sketches... the cars facing the 'other' direction are dead give-away! (-: Such excellent carving of shapes and tones, as always.

You really should. It takes the preciousness away, and forces you to focus on the most basic elements of a scene.

Hi Doug. You really must try out the taped off board. It’s a great way to sketch out and idea, work out a color palette, and warm up. You can always cut out the little paintings and sell them or hand them out as gifts when you are finished. Let us know if you need any tips!

If you wanted to separate your little paintings on you panel what would you use to saw them apart, without ruining them. A table saw?

Great fan of your work, amazing work on your site. You seem to be having fun with your sketches and I was curious about your brushes - do you guys use Handover brushes, they do look like Handover?
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80074 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris! We mainly use Rosemary and co brushes. For studio painting we use the flat ( bright) Ivory synthetics, and for outside I like to used bristles in both flat and filbert. I have a few round brushes as well.
@chrisblight60694 жыл бұрын
@@paintingwithlindseyandnate8007 Right, the Handover have a similar brush as the R&C, long flat bristles which I'm a fan of, although it's been a while now. Anyway, thanks.

Love these vids, What size wood panel are you using? And how do you cut them up without destroying the paintings (if you’d be so kind)
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80073 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay! I believe the wood panel was an 11x14. Cutting them out was tricky. I just covered the dried painting with parchment paper so the saw dust didn’t cover it, and cut very very carefully.

This is great, thanks for sharing. Did you limit yourselves to like an hour for each painting? Also, can I ask what the surface is you’re painting on? A lot of green is difficult to break up, appreciate any tips on that. Perhaps it’s material for another video? Thanks!
@paintingwithlindseyandnate80074 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam!!! We tried to limit ourselves to about an hour/hour and a half per painting and we work on a 11/14 plywood board sealed and three coats of Gesso. We have 1/4 inch artists tape and used it to divide the board into eight sections. Yes, greens are hard to break up especially when there is a lot of it! I think the best way to break it up is to assign a foreground, middle ground, and background green to the scene. The background green will be a little bluer, less yellow, and the values will be closer together. The foreground greens will have more warmth, so that means reds and yellows, but also darker in value, more contrast, and more saturated in general. The mid ground greens should be less saturated than the foreground, but more saturated than the background. You would also want to make sure the values of the green clumps get lighter as they recede, and the values get closer together. Does this make sense?
@sallygruber27494 жыл бұрын
warm shadows? Cool! Lol!

Love the idea of this video. I'll try this next time out. I see that Lindsey has a Strada easel what does Nate use? A Daytripper? I looked for a bio about the two of you but didn't see one. Both American? Studying in London?

You really should give this a try. It’s a very helpful exercise! Lindsey is indeed using the Strada easel and I’m using the daytripper. Love them both. We moved to London from the San Francisco Bay Area in November 2019 and are making the most of them time we have here. London is an amazing city with so much to offer!
