Having turned 50 recently, I bought myself Cornwall IV’s and put them into an 11’x10’ office. Mid-life crisis? More of a “holy crap, you survived 50 trips around the sun - you deserve it!”Essentially, I bought speakers for the size of the house I want but don’t have yet. However, I built 12 acoustic panels to compensate for small space and paired the CW’s with a Yamaha AS1200 and SMSL 400m DAC. The experience is phenomenal - I really love the sound stage. It sits in front of me, but not by much. It’s like being in the first row or two of a concert. I demo’d the Parasound Hint 6 but found it too laidback. The sound stage was further away and not as engaging. Anyway, I’m quite grateful for my setup and was really happy to see this video. Nice job and thanks for sharing.

Hahaha, so great! So many funny moments and an excellent review! I would rather error on the side of a bigger speaker than a smaller one. Scale is such an important thing to me and I find that big speakers usually do a better job. ( Loved the part where she tossed the paper).

I can't believe you put stuff on top of those Cornwalls because anything you put up there will simply dance right off of them. LOL! I know from experience. I can absolutely guarantee you Cornwalls soundstage is absolutely amazing in a large room. Amazing! 🙂 Mine are Cornwall 1's circa 1979 BTW. I have since updated the crossovers from Crites.
@RobertLindabury
@RobertLindabury 2 жыл бұрын
@Tweed Penguin The crossovers didn't "need" replacing. My Cornwall 1's had the original crossovers and a year or two after that Klipsch had updated the crossovers to improve the sound. I've had these speakers since 1979 and never had to do anything with them. I wanted to see how they'd sound with updated crossovers so I bought them and installed them myself. They were not expensive and the swap was easy. So, no, it's not sad.

Thanks for the video and great channel! I have a similar size listening room/office (2.6 x 5.5m) and am currently considering some Forte iii's to run with my 35w EL34 amp. Might change that idea now after your comments on imaging. I'm running some older dual concentric 6" Tannoy 613's floorstanders. Had considered some Tannoy XT6F or Klipsch R6000f. What have been your favourite speakers in your room for that holographic sound powered with your tubes?
@SmallRoomAudio
@SmallRoomAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel - and welcome to the channel! I think tannoys are one of the best for holographic imaging. Sonus faber tend to be very good, and I’ve had success with kef’s implementation of their concentric driver too. Best imaging I’ve ever had - Sonus Faber Electa amator at the high end (although they don’t really suit a very small room as the tweeter can be a bit hot), or tannoy mini gold reference at the more affordable end.

Nice video. I am in a 10X12 foot room--so even smaller than yours. I have a tubed monoblocks but they just dont match up well with my Sonusfaber Oly 1s. I got a e-purify Class D amp which DOES make the fabers sing. I still want to switch up to my tubed amps on occasion so I am thinking some Hereseys as a 2d set of speakers. I also run dual Rythmik subwoofers.

I have owned both klipsch Heresys and Spendor 3/1 s. Although they really are very different from each other, I find both appealing. I particularly like the Hersys partnered with a turntable. I have never found the Heresys shrill, beaming, or even particularly characterful. What I notice is that the klipsch reveal other components characteristics, whereas the Spendor reveal recordings. Also, I suppose the issue of size really diminishes when you are sitting nearfield because you really do not hear all the nasties bouncing off the walls in confusion and chaos. One thing the klipsch Heritage series do particularly well is play full and detailed at low volumes. Of course, a larger room would be preferable.

Hello, just discovered you yesterday. Fun video! Good luck with your channel! I watched the review of the Schiit Freya. I must admit I’m a bit of a Schiit fanboy. I own the Bifrost 2 DAC. I’m interested in introducing tubes into my system and I’m unsure if I should start with preamp or amp. Currently I have a vintage McIntosh C31V pre and a couple of vintage Mac amps. My speakers are Revel Concerta 2 F36. They are super revealing. Would you mind weighing in?
@SmallRoomAudio
@SmallRoomAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, welcome to the channel! I think schiit products are great - genuinely fantastic equipment for the money. I would definitely explore the Freya Plus for tubes, I know it gets hype and publicity, but that’s simply because it’s really very good - the way it should be!

@@SmallRoomAudio Thanks so much for the reply! So for my clarity, (I’m old - 67...sorry for being dense) would you buy a tube preamp before a power amp to add to your system? It’s nice to see younger people doing classic component reviews. Most of us are like Gandalf’s age 😂.
@SmallRoomAudio
@SmallRoomAudio 3 жыл бұрын
He Steve, in this case I’d say yes - mainly because a tube preamp can have so many different sound flavours depending on mode and tube type. Flavour to taste basically! I love the fact HiFi and music in general is essentially ageless - a fantastic hobby we can all share! 👍

@@dman7776 to be completely honest I don’t think there’s a way to know for sure unless you try them. It should be big enough to get a great sound from them though, because you can get away with sticking them in the corners - just be weary of bass trapping as they can generate a good amount of low end and you don’t want it too boomy!

@@SmallRoomAudio I use them with a McIntosh MHA-150 Headphone Amplifier which also puts out 50wpc. When not using the Harbeths I use the Focal Stellia closed back headphones. It's the perfect, small, near field system. Considering the M30.2-XD's which are the bigger brother to the P3ESR's. I come from a frame of reference from the 1970's with Altec, JBL, Marantz, etc using MUCH larger gear, but these days smaller is WAY better for me.

6 x 2.5m or 161 square feet isn't tiny, it's just weird. Eighty square feet is tiny. (Just ask people in insanely expensive cities, where 161 square feet may be a decent apartment.) So you need a channel called Weird Room Audio. Bonus question: Are you Mick Talbot's illegitimate kid? Asking for a friend.
