The green "jelly" (we call jello) salad has me laughing. Those were super popular when I was growing up in the 1970s. You can occasionally run across entire cookbooks at resale stores from the 1950s or 60s that are full of those recipes. But, the one that came to my mind when you were describing the version you tried, is called the Waldorf Salad. Instead of green jello, it's made with pistachio pudding, whipped cream, grapes, celery and walnuts.... I'm pretty sure. It's actually one of my favorites still. I'm sure you can find the recipe online. 😎
@annec81272 жыл бұрын
That is the most bizarre description of Waldorf Salad I've ever heard. Sounds more like "Ambrosia." I'm sure there are lots and lots of variations. To me (also American) Waldorf Salad is apples, celery, and a few nuts with a "dressing" of thinned and sweetened mayonnaise.

My family moved to Boulder in 1970 when I was in elementary school. (I'm dating myself here) and I remember when the Pearl Street Mall opened in 1977. It definitely transformed downtown. I'm glad you got to spend time in Boulder. (Fun trivia: For the locals, the flatirons are not mountains. They call them "foothills" because the real mountains are behind them.) So great to see your smiling faces and I'm happy to see you're spending time with Tim and Monique. (Follow both of their channels!) Enjoy your vacation and have a fantastic time at GenCon! P.S. We ate a lot of jello salad in the 60s and 70s and it was always (canned) fruit, not veggies. It feels like a retro food. I don't know anyone here in New York who eats it today. Not a big fan. And I love pumpkin pie (unsweetened) for Thanksgiving but am not really into the sweet potato pie.

It's important to me that you know that jelly salads are not common in Americans' diets! 😅 Gelatin was a weird fad circa 1960, and vintage issues of Good Housekeeping showcase some truly bizarre recipes. Some of these recipes still manage to survive, particularly in the Midwest, because Granny still brings it to the potluck every year so it's "traditional". But it's definitely not something you're bound to see at every restaurant or Christmas feast! Sweet potato and marshmallow is 5000x more common, and even that is something that not everyone does. Anyway, happy Gen Con!

Glad you had a chance to experience Colorado! I'm not a native, but I moved here over 20 years ago and if I had only two options of where to live in the world, it would be Colorado or Australia (not well versed enough to pick a specific province... yet). It really is beautiful and the people are so nice. I'm so glad that one of your experiences in the States has been to have indigenous food. It's something that is uniquely American (and yes, I mean all the Americas), but is not considered by the mainstream as such. Not to mention, it's delicious. Next time you are in Denver, look up Tocabe. It's a fast-foodish-style restaurant, where you go up and order at a counter, but they have "indian tacos" that are a fry bread base with bean, hominy, corn, etc. and your choice of protein, including your favorite and mine, bison. Yum yum yum! Fry bread is as delicious as you would imagine, given the name. Also, no thank you on the gelatin salad... 😣
