I'm a shop slob. I'll be the first to admit it. But I'm tired of being disorganized, so I built this small tool chest of drawers ( * detailed plans available * ) and I'm already in love with how much it's cut down on my clutter. In this video I'll show you how I made mine, and how you can make a small woodworking tool chest too!

You mention perhaps a lack of wall storage. I have been making small shelves between the wall studs. A 2x4 and drilled in though the stud to the board. For a bit bigger shelves use a 1x6 or 1x8.....then small board across the front on the stud to keep items from falling - a shim will get that board out even further and make better use if the shelf space. These little shelves are made from scrap wood and really tidy up the shop - small bottles and cans...tools..booze..soda.. tapes and anything small. Might work for ya.... cheers

The esthetics on this build are amazingly beautiful. Just this simpalist of touches here and there have combined together to produce a set of drawers that have gone from simple to sleek and chic. I love the way the dovetails and screw covers at the bottom are proud of the work and give it that custom feel. I would love to have this in my home as a storage box for my embroidery threads - it would be perfect, so looks like this might be my next project (when I have the time and the space). Great video so I've subscribed.

I just built a similar cabinet for the exact same reason, shop slob. It's not anywhere near as pretty and doesn't have dovetails anywhere, but it works and now I have more places to put more crap! 6 drawers, each 4 inches deep and 42 1/2" wide. (don't ask) Anyway, it amounts to 42 1/2x4x16x6=16,320 square inches of new storage space. All from a bunch of cheapo used plywood and a stack of 2x12s ripped to 1 1/2" strips for the top.

Great video. I also have a ridgid table saw, and I am very curious how you made your zero clearance insert plate, as I am struggling to get square cuts because the regular insert plate flexes and is not level with the table or square to the fence
@Craftswright
@Craftswright 4 жыл бұрын
It's a great saw but that is a HUGE problem with that model. The throat plate is as solid as a wet noodle haha I should probably do a video on it, but the short and skinny is: - Take a scrap piece of 3/4" plywood double-side tape it to the top of your saw (with the blade and riving knife removed) - Turn your saw up on it's side and remove the black dust shroud - From underneath the saw take a pencil and trace out the throat opening, including the tabs for the leveling screws - At the bandsaw or with a jigsaw remove the waste and tune the fit so the piece fits IN to the throat perfectly - Double sided tape your new template on top of your final stock - Take a router with a straight pattern bit in it and remove the waste material leaving about an 1/8" lip - Fine tune the fit and you're good to go!

Hi, really great video and thanks for the links. I've ordered several off your list. I noticed the tool you were using to check for square - seems like a great approach. I've tried finding them on the internet and it seems they're called pinch sticks. But the only one I found to order was on etsy and it was tiny. Did you buy them or make them? I looked for a CNC router SVG file as well. No go. I'd appreciate any help you could offer pointing me in the right direction.

Nice work! A friendly safety tip though -> where you show the miter gauge trick, you're using the fence as a stop block. I know its not a through cut but if the piece happens to bind on the fence it can kick back like you wouldnt believe if you're pressing on a miter. A solution to this is to use a reference surface pressed on the fence that doesnt travel to the blade. A squared up piece of wood or whatever.
@Craftswright
@Craftswright 4 жыл бұрын
I would totally agree with you in most cases, and in most cases I do use a spacer that slips away once contact with the blade is made, but since the miter gauge was reversed, which puts inward pressure on the stock instead of outward, and the cut was so close to the fence (less chance of twist followed by kickback) I wasn't too worried about it. Ideally this should be done with a table saw sled 😁

@@Craftswright didnt even think of the reverse miter haha. I see wood pushed against fence for a cross cut and my butt hole puckers lol. Good stuff though, thanks for the polite correction, I wasnt trying to be pedantic fwiw.
@Craftswright

Didn't take your comment as pedantic at all! Was good insight and in all reality you're correct - I could have made that cut in a safer manner even with the miter gauge reversed!

@@Craftswright Well, the content was interesting. Mostly thought the general delivery was good. The BG music was limited and subtle, not over bearing but enhancing. Your narration was rather professional in delivery in a folksy gentle humor sort of way. Couple of visual jokes caught the eye without distracting. Looks like you had some fun with the tool chest build and with making the video presentation.

1st video I’ve seen of yours, nice work! Just subbed. Now for my opinion. The plywood your drawer bottoms were fast and easy but, I really feel take away from the handmade look of the cabinet. It would’ve been just as easy to cut a wider groove in the carcass sides for a hardwood runner that would attach to the drawer sides. The drawer front would extend to the sides hiding the runner for a very clean look. My .02 cents worth, hope you don’t mind.

Thanks for the kind words and the sub Tom! You're totally right, and I don't mind your .02 at all, keep em coming in the future in fact. There are a few things on this build I would change if I had to do it over again, that probably being one of them. I just thought the concept was fun so I wanted to give it a go, with the bottoms also being the slides, but yes hardwood runners would have looked nicer and also hidden the sliding mechanism for the drawers. Cheers Tom!

great video! Could you say more about the blue tape trick? Is it primarily for visibility? Or maybe it helps with having few marks to sand out later?
@Craftswright
@Craftswright 3 жыл бұрын
Yes on the visibility, plus one more: when you use a pencil mark there's no "stop" for the chisel to fall into. You could cut to the left, right, or split the pencil mark. With a cut line, or the tape, there's actually something for the chisel to fall into or bump up against, making for a more accurate cut.

Hi nice work, couple of questions if you have a moment - did your wood come dried already? and whats the device you are using at 3.54 to help with the mitre cuts?
@Craftswright

Hey Kingsub, the wood I used came from the mill already dried yes and the jig I'm using to cut the dovetails is the @JonathanKatz-Moses dovetail guide which is really great! Hope that helped :)
