Ok, problem with radioactive animals is they get the same issues as humans. So their immune system will break down, they will get cancer, they will die from the same thing that kills the humans. Killing them is not only to keep them from migrating somewhere else and expose others to radiation and illnesses they've picked up due to their immune system breaking down. It is also to spare these pets from a painful and horrible death from radiation poisoning. It was both a necessity and a kindness. Like the soldier kept repeating: "Don't let them suffer!" And they showed us so that it would sink in how our mistakes affect the innocent. You have such a great heart, great soul. Great respect. I look forward to your further reaction.

They needed to show it because it happened. Because people were obligated to do unimaginable things to save lifes. And there was nothing graphic. Don't put yourself above these people because you never was put in a situation where you needed to do something like this.

The animals were dangerously radio active and were a threat to humans and any other living thing the come in contact with. They were doomed to die a slow painful death from radiation poisoning. That is why they had to be put down.

@@adnanatthemovies My guess is that they wanted to make sure we saw that both livestock AND pets had to be aggressively euthanized...that is why they show the soldier killing that old woman's cow at the beginning AND the killing of the pets. 👍

Much of the material in the show comes the book "Voices of Chernobyl". It's a collection of the experiences and accounts of people who were impacted by the disaster. Lyudmilla's and Pavel's stories come directly from accounts in the book. I'm actually afraid to say that the show actually toned down the horrors they experienced; The show actually intensionally leaves some facts out because they were too disturbing

Oh boy...episode 4...this is pretty much the toughest episode to watch for almost everyone. Something that does not often get mentioned is that many of the men who went out onto those incredibly radioactive roof sections actually volunteered to go back out more than once in order to save others from having to be "biorobots". Also, that huge revelation that the Soviet State knew about the fatal flaw in the shutdown system and both covered it up and did nothing to fix it, all the while lying to even the plant operators about the safety of the RBMK reactors, is something that could only happen in a totalitarian state like the USSR...where there is no free press or free scientific establishment for whistleblowers to talk to when they know about wrongdoing by the State.👍

I've really been enjoying your reactions to this series. This is probably the episode that most upset me when I first saw this series, and it seems to be the one that most reactors find the most difficult too. I guess it's because as humans we all share a tiny bit of responsibility for what happens in the world, no matter how small, while the animals are always completely innocent.

Remember - those animals were just as effected by the accident as the people were. They hammer "Don't let them suffer" for a reason. And because humans caused this, it's up to them to fix it - even if that means merciful deaths for innocent creatures who don't understand what's changed.

We appreciate the videos when you have the time for them, don't worry! Always glad to see a reaction episode to this series show up, too. It's a gruesome and yet fascinating piece of history. Though this episode-- what they do to the pets here is so awful (if necessary). I had to go and hug my own after I finished.

I did the same when I got back home. I always do it, but the feelings were different after I watched this episode.

That part at 4:05 shows a part of the process of the cleanup, which is using various kinds of detectors to figure out where the radiation has spread to. It does not contaminate evenly, the radioactive particles are carried on the wind, so some areas will be more radioactive than others. They need to know where the most radioactive places are so they can generally avoid them. The areas where there is a smaller amount of radioactive particles are the ones they would look at cleaning up, if that is possible...but with the most radioactive spots it is mostly about marking them so they can be monitored and left alone. The 90 second time limit for each "biorobot" going out onto that most dangerous section of roof was calculated to be 50 percent of the total lifetime limit of radiation, but as we saw there were men that were not able to get back to safety in 90 seconds...and as I noted in my other comment there were many heroes who went out multiple times. It is safe to say that a significant number of those men had their lives significantly shortened by their exposure.

It's crazy to think when Russia invaded Ukraine in the current war, they actually occupied the Chernobyl area and hundreds of there soldiers got radiation poisoning. Because they dug trenches into the forest where it is very high radiation levels still.
