Karen was an award-winning jazz drummer as a teenager....before she started singing. Her brother wrote a lot of their biggest hits, did their arrangements, sang harmonies, and played keyboards. Karen is thought to be the best female singer of all time!

"We've Only Just Begun" was practically every couple's wedding song in the early 70's. I also like "Close to You". A very appealing reaction video.

Karen's voice is hauntingly beautiful and her drum skills are world class, R.I.P. little drummer girl. Richard's music choices and arrangements are genius, so beautifully well done.

I saw the Carpenters in 1972 and was blown away. Karen, besides having one of the best voices of all time was a superb drummer/singer. She played drums and sang at the same time

You just HAVE to listen to more Carpenters, including some drumming videos of Karen, who considered herself a "drummer who sang". Karen's voice and Richard's arrangements as well as their amazing harmonies will never be duplicated. She died much too early in life at age 32 from complications of the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa. R.I.P Karen.

Richard and Karen Carpenter were an active duo from 1969 to 1983. They were the number one selling group of the 1970s. All of the vocals you hear are just the two of them, as Richard used overdubbing of their two voices to create all of the harmonies. They sometimes used up to 30 voice tracks to create that lush blended sound. Karen was a contralto and was known to have perfect pitch with a three octave range. She would often nail her recordings on the first take (she was known as a one-take wonder). She had such a unique tone and timbre to her voice (particularly in her lower register) that even 50 years later, it is instantly recognizable. She was also an extremely accomplished drummer who had no problem singing and drumming at the same time. Richard was a musical genius in his own right. A keyboard prodigy, who selected and/or wrote all of their music to specifically take advantage of Karen's voice. He also was an extremely gifted arranger and producer. They would often spend months in the studio to create their albums, with their signature overdubbed harmonies. Karen's story is a tragic one, as she suffered from the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, and died of heart failure in 1983 at the extremely young age of 32. However, they left us with such a rich legacy of music (12 albums of original material over a 14 year career). If you would like to learn more about this extraordinary singer, I highly recommend watching the documentary: "Karen Carpenter, Starving for Perfection". It's safe to say there will never be another more beautiful voice than Karen Carpenter.

I've been a fan of the Carpenters since I was little, thanks to my mom and older siblings. It's so hard to come up with suggestions because there are so many good songs. My favorite when I was little was "Close to You," but the one I relate to most now is "Yesterday Once More." But I don't think I've ever heard a Carpenters song I didn't like, so you really can't go wrong with them.

Another great reaction, Adnan! In my life, I have traveled through many genres of music, but there has always been a core collection of bands who always remain with me and The Carpenters are one of them. When I was in a heavy metal band, I would leave a gig or rehearsal and oftentimes would listen to The Carpenters on my way home. A few suggestions, Adnan: The Carpenters: "Goodbye To Love." Gordon Lightfoot: "If You Could Read My Mind." The Alan Parsons Project: "Time."

More to try: A Song for You, Yesterday Once More, Close to You (their 1st hit(, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Top of the World, Only Yesterday, Ticket to Ride (a genius ballad arrangement of a Beatles rock song) and many more. There are NO bad Carpenters songs! Enjoy!! You don't hear music of this quality anywhere today. SO wonderful and creatively-arranged by Richard, the virtuoso. And beautifully sung by his sister Karen!

Thank you for this reaction. Karen was sad despite her success...she suffered with bulimia and anorexia that ultimately caused her death. She died very young. Her pitch perfect soft angelic voice sounds, now, as if she tried to sing her way to peace in her life. I get emotional EVERY time I hear one of their songs.

You are right, my friend, there is much to say about this group. About two talented people - a sister with a fabulously charming voice, also gifted with the talent of playing the drums, and about a brother - a musical genius who arranged all their compositions. And for me, this old group, incredibly popular in the 70s of the last century, has become a discovery of recent years. I listen to their songs one after another and I can't get enough. What a pity that such music is not composed now. And there are no musical groups now that sing and play like that.

I recommend "Superstar" or "A Song for you" to further showcase her amazing voice. She always said "The money's in the basement" because people loved when she sang deep, low tones.:

What a nice little rabbit hole to fall into. Karen was a wonderful artist who died far too soon. I think being able to hit lower notes is part of her magic. Richard was a great song writer and arranger as well. I suggest 'Goodbye To Love' from 1972 next. I think it's the 1st Power Ballad ever recorded with fuzz guitar. It breaks away from just repeating the verse line like most pop songs from back then, quite ground breaking. Love that song, tons more to come. Cheers.

Karen was a fantastic singer, one of the best, ever! Her feelings of loneliness were very real! This angel developed a severe case of depression accompanied by Anorexia-she essentially starved herself to death. Simply Tragic. ❤She never realized how loved she was by millions of fans. ❤

Happy to see you discovering some music from an earlier period than your usual interests. Another singer of note was Harry Chapin, who was not only a fantastic lyricist, but also a humanitarian who used a lot of his money to address hunger, both in the US and beyond its borders. He did this before it became popular. Some songs: Cat’s in The Cradle ( taken from a nursery rhyme, a poem for young children), Taxi, Sequel, All My Life’s A Circle.
