@johncinfloridausa22362 жыл бұрын
I once heard 2 guys talking about this song on the radio. One said, "It's about sex"; the other responded, " Yes, sex with Leonard Cohen." Which it sort of is, kinda. But it's clearly about love also, in my opinion (romantic love, not agape or filios). And it's love and/or sex in a Jewish or Judeo-Christian context. There are certainly many references to Jewish scripture (for example, David, Samson -- and not only to David as psalmist, but to David as adulterer: "he saw her bathing on the roof.") I read that Leonard Cohen wrote 100 or more verses to this song. One these gentlemen don't sing (starting "there was a time you let me know") certainly references sex; another they don't sing (starting "I did my best, it wasn't much") is very deeply religious, and it would fit a Jewish or Christian context. Listen to LC's original album version to hear how those verses work (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWofoyspdSFY80 ). It all seems to me to be about a sort of mysticism expressed in Judeo-Christian terms that could spring from earthly, physical love and sex. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. And please don't think I'm a jerk for writing all this! It's a really good song and it stands up to discussion, and I first heard it in 1991, on John Cale's album "Fragments of a Rainy Season" -- live, vocal & piano (also available on Various Artists, "I'm Your Fan," a tribute to Leonard Cohen, and on youtube). I've never quite worked out what it's all about. The Small Town Titans do an amazingly good job on this one, in my opinion. SO MUCH BETTER than the others I've heard (though John Cale's is still my favorite). This one is my second favorite. I think you have to be an old man to do the best version. (And I don't think John Cale could do a "Grinch" better than theirs.)
@BrandonWilliams-lk8qo22 күн бұрын
@@lwalker8992 not a Christian song, but a lot of biblical motivation. David's chord ( his songs and playing) the faith being tested, and the woman on the roof bathing ( Bathsheba was bathing on the roof and David committed adultery with her, then had her husband killed) The broken throne is the succession from David to Solomon ( instead of the kingship going to his elder son, it went to the son David had an adulterous relationship with, Bathsheba) The" tied you to the kitchen chair,...she cut your hair" referenced Samson having been tricked and hair cut by Delilah. His strength was then lost, and when it was restored and he pulled down the columns, he cried out in praise to God. The definition of hallelujah is just that, praise to God. There's quite a bit in this song.
