Honestly, the little girl is a pretty good actress. The way she keeps a straight face while saying monotone/robotic lines, she kind of makes the character work.

I guess he is analyzing the series from a millennial perspective, that is why perhaps the dialogues and the situations acted out may seem strange to the new generations. This is not the only show from the past that shows weird situations or strange dialogues to many young people.

It's great. Cheesy and great. The 80s had shows which still contained a lot of 1950s morality and aesthetics, and if you grew up with it, the nostalgia only makes it better as an adult. Also Harriett is the greatest character in the show.

I watched it back in syndication. Granted i was 2-6 back when it originally aired, so I watched it when I was like 7. It was harmless enough. Entertainment for a child. Now The Charmings was horrific. Snow White and Prince Charming wake up in 20th century and try to be a suburban family, complete with the Evil Queen as the mother-in-law. Lasted 21 episodes across 2 seasons, and the first actress playing Snow White quit after 6 episodes.

I feel like there is an amount of irony in the shows intro that you aren't giving it credit for. Even by 80's standards, the opening is cheezy. I think this is supposed to be contrasting the then-modern 80s sitcom against a 50's sitcom introduction to highlight to irony of the characters being an ordinary family... with a robot. I kind of wish situation comedies would come back into fashion. I think the concept of an everyday family living in a bizarre situation is kind of endlessly charming. A everyday happy family on the moon. An everyday happy family during the apocalypse. And everday happy family on a pirate ghost ship. Keep em coming. I'll watch every one of them.

@ChachiTelevision1979
@ChachiTelevision1979 9 жыл бұрын
***** Good point. I guess the reason why the Cavemen show and Rob are in a different league from Heil Honey is because the former two had bad executions while Heil Honey's premise alone could have only worked as a four-minutes sketch but was attempted to be drawn out as a long-running sit-com. It is definitely in a class of its own badness. I don't think it's merely because it's Hitler -- there are tons of comedies that use Hitler as the punchline (most Mel Brooks comedies, Danger-5, etc), but this one went for the easiest jokes and would probably draw a blank very, very early within the series, which is why it was just so horrible.

You know, personally? From what I saw of the series from the clips that were shown in this video, I think I can see the charm. Albeit, the cast doesn't look like they're anything fantastic, but the little girl playing the robot? She really seems like she'd be the one that made it good. Call me crazy, but her performance just seems really well done. I would honestly watch this show purely to see what she could do with her role. And the robot in general just seems like a very likable character.

They are inconsistent with how they treat Vicki. In some episodes they're (usually the mother) telling her how much they love her like their own daughter, and in one episode the father casually says he'll replace her with a new-improved model. If she is an appliance to help around the house with no self-awareness, conscience, emotions, etc... that's one thing. But they played it like she had feelings some of the time when she would cry, joke, experience jealousy, or do things that weren't programmed.

@@behindthescenesphotos5133 I was re-watchng Small Wonder recently because of this video, and one thing that struck me is the dad is kind of a jerk. In the exact same episode, he will one minute say he wants to test Vicki's ability to be human-like, then in the next minute deny she has feelings and tell his wife not to treat her like a child. Like, what the heck is this guy's problem? If you want her to learn, you treat her like a child, period.

It would only have lasted so long. At some point the producers & writers would have had to make a choice: 1)Vicky goes through puberty--what on earth kind of "upgrades" does "Dad" give her? *shudders* or 2) Vicky never grows up. That only works in cartoons. Maybe they were really just spoofing 80s sitcoms the entire time, including that annoying habit of suddenly going so dark and serious sometimes. Has anyone ever forgotten the bike shop episode of Diff'rent Strokes? *shudders again*

I know this was mentioned on the version on the main site, but this show seems to be kind of a knockoff of Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump, which is a comedy manga/anime about a genius inventor creating a little robot girl and trying to keep it a secret from everyone in town. I have the movie set released by Discotek and judging from those films the series is actually quite hysterical. Kinda juvenile, but it has a goofy charm.

Thanks, N.C., for an actually objective and balanced review. I have nostalgic affection for the show, because I was just the right age when the show premiered. I was into geeky stuff, and I was the same age as the actress playing VICI (Tiffany Brissette), so I had a crush on her. As an adult, I can tell how massively cheesy the show is, and I can't defend its many flaws. Still, the level of hatred and vitriol that people aim at the show frankly mystifies me. It really was just cheesy and generic in the way many '80s sitcoms were. I know it's faint praise, but there really *are* a lot of worse shows out there. I think you hit the nail on the head: There's a tonal mismatch going on that leaves viewers more frustrated than bored. Keep up the great work!

That OPENING THEME actually sounds allot more 1950's like than 80's like! THIS show ran on SYNDICATED tv, not network ( something this guy failed to mention in his ranting ) and weird shows like THIS ONE tended to do better and last longer in THAT format, thus accounting for it's longevity. I'd say "Hariett" was also a bit reminiscent of the Gladys Kravitz character from Bewitched - particularly in how she would get nosy and witness in amazement weird things pertaining to the girl being a robot ( exemplified at 2:29 ). Speaking of "Harriett", I never got WHY she had such a crush on that pudgy and less than handsome boy.

It's one of the best shows of my childhood .. till now I watch it eagerly .. I can't understand how u judge it like this .. it is only fantasy .. like other famous fairy tales like Snow White .. Cinderella .. Santa Claus .. they r fascinating, unreal though .. we must take it like this .. by its charm and magic just like kids do

I'd love to see a WTR of Noozles. Saw only part of that cartoon as a kid but it stuck with me for decades. Something about a child-oriented cartoon that involved xenophobia, eternal solitary incarceration and parallel worlds doomed to annihilate one another on account of mankind's mistreatment of the Earth.

Did they really take this one down on you? Well I'm happy you replaced it. This show was strangely one of my favorites while growing up in the 80s. It fell into that awesome around dinner time slot. Cartoons are over. Prime time hadn't started. The news is about to start... Small Wonder! And the live action Punky Bruster. Then what was that weird show with the 2 guys... One of them had a funny Arminian accent? Then lastly... NIGHT COURT! I don't know why but my little clinical 1980s sarcastic mind loved Night Court more than ALF! .... Wow. We were lucky growing up when we did. TV and movies really turned to shit just as we became teens. Thank God for Anime!!! XDDDD

Cheesy? Definitely, but as a kid I'd be lying if I didn't say that when this show was on I was watching. Nearly all the shows that were directed toward a family audience or children had a HIGH cheese content in the 80s. I think that's why so many people look back so fondly on them. Even if you say, "That show was so cheesy and terrible, I don't know why I watched it.", the show had an effect on you because you clearly can remember it. People say the same thing about Full House, yet there is enough nostalgic popularity around the show that 20 years later it gets a sequel series. Shows like Small Wonder stay with us cause in the end all they wanted to do was entertain, whether the shows charm came from it's cheesiness or just the absurdity of the general concept it's a show a lot of people remember whether they liked it or not. Oh, lastly I was convinced as a kid the neighbor girl's hair was a giant wig. Also the girl who played Vicki grew up to be hot.

Apparently, if rumors are to be believed, they originally had the script from the original Japanese show translated and ready to record the episodes with, but the English dubbing studio really did loose the script so they had to make it up as they went along. And apparently the guy who sang the intro was really drunk when he recorded it.

For people like me who didn't understand the Gutenaf joke, I'll do my best to explain it. "Gutenaf" sounds a lot like "good enough", so when he says "you couldn't leave Gutenaf alone" it sounds like he's saying "you couldn't leave good enough alone", which used to be a more popular phrase back then. It basically means "you couldn't have let it be". In a nutshell, they named the character Gutenaf to make way for a little pun.
