It was better to growl because the damage on it didn't matter. Making the match up better was WAYYYYYY better there. Since it couldn't crit it was better to take less damage over time then put alittle damage on it.

Body Press calculates its damage using the user's Defense stat instead of their Attack stat; as such, Growl only reduces the damage of the Iron Heads. In contrast, using Magical Leaf means Torterra can kill in 3 Earthquakes instead of 4, reducing the number of times that Smallant has to go back to using Synthesis to recover HP after an Earthquake, and also presenting fewer opportunities for possible Iron Head flinching. Therefore, Magical Leaf is more consistent protection against flinches, and the HP saved on any Iron Heads is made up for by needing one less heal-cycle due to using one fewer Earthquake.

@yama_noki but if you did the math you he would have known that it would have came down to iron heads no body presses. And with growl it would have done less with that since it could crit. He had plenty of synths left so it would have had to get like 6+ flinches to work. Trust me I've done the math because I used torterra to beat Vito also the same way almost. I only got flinched once not 2-3 times but that doesmt change the fact that growl was 100% the safer play.

If he growled a second time, he would have to flinch 4 times instead of 3. Plus. He could have gone koal on an iron head, growl it doen to -6 and hope to win with like donphan or koal in the end.

@ yeah but how many pokemon know 100% accurate moves in the early game? Or how long would it take you to get to a pokemon that knows 100% accurate moves that you can catch in the wild? There would be plenty of mandatory battles before you can tick these boxes.

@@Slickcactus I have, without even trying. Start as Totodile in Crystal, Scratch is 100 acc. Water at 13, Bite at 21 Croconaw, eventually Surf, Ice Beam, Earthquake, then maybe just leave Bite or something for last slot. Don't bother using any other Pokes, become overleveled without even grinding. Done

Depends on your outlook, if you enjoy challenging yourself under increasingly harder circumstances it's fun for you. Hyper difficulty isn't for everyone and we all draw our own lines

If you go in expecting things to be genuinely unfair in increasingly obtuse and insane ways, yes actually That kind of insane difficulty is not something the normal player would enjoy though, and later in the game things do get very stupidly unfair (every trainer in victory road has a mega evolution, some of them have two I believe) so you have to go in understanding this

The way to look at it is that every battle's a (increasingly difficult) puzzle, and what we're seeing here is someone actually placing the pieces after analyzing the puzzle. The analyzing is very much part of the fun. But such a thing has to be up your alley

I'm someone who thinks vanilla pokemon games are wayy too easy and boring. But I have also never nuzlocked anything because I'm not SUPER obsessed with pokemon and I also don't really want to go through calcing for hours for fights and stuff like that. I tried playing this game as a normal playthrough and it was actually fun and challenging for me. If you enjoy pokemon but also think that the franchise games hold ur hand too much and make it too easy, romhacks like this and radical red are a breath of fresh air and very fun actually.
