I Am Spartacus I’d just like to point out that $100 million isn’t particularly expensive as far as modern combat aircraft go, and that they’re actually $78 million a pop for the A model (you know, the one that the Air Force uses). Not to mention that they have exceeded the capabilities of many contemporary aircraft, so regardless of how high the requirements were set, it’s doing fairly well for itself.

Breaks down into three pieces that wrap in a towel and store in a duffle! Went with a H2 buffer to tame the little beast. Purchased my first cry havoc unit in Jan 2018 and put it on an 8" 9mm AR that I assembled. It has a law folder and brace and fits in a 50 cal ammo can. Shoots great too. I love the folding pistol grip as well. Really turns it into a sweet small package.

This is a case where I think an integrally suppressed .300 blackout would make a lot of sense. You dont really have to worry about resupplying a downed pilot and having an exceptionally quiet weapon would be a huge asset for someone alone in enemy territory

That was my thought as well. Even if they had a detachable suppressor it would be ok. No reason to announce your position every time you have to use the weapon.

That's a very valid point you guys have, when a pilot is going to use this, it means he/she was downed behind enemy lines, the less attention the pilot draws, the better. What I've heard was, that the Air force had some requirements for this new PDW, and one of those requirements was that it must be able to reach out to targets at 300 yards. That might be the reason why they didn't go for a suppressed 300BO. Also the accuracy requirements might have been an issue, as 300BO doesn't produce the kind of accuracy that 5.56 produces and 5.56 is pretty much being purchased by the 100's of thousands by the air force, meaning now they need to purchase ammo specially for these PDW's.

@@Jarrow13 Also consider that the 300 BLK sbr question has already been answered in that no organization in the military has decided to switch away from the tried and true mk18 style platform matched with mk262 5.56 NATO. It took the military around 20 years to get the 5.56mm sbr to work right and the advantage of 300blk is not as much as people think.

That is a really good point but I'm not sure I would want a gun strapped to my arm if it was the only good arm I had. I think a pistol at that point would be more accurate if shooting free hand. Off some type of cover the rifle would take the cake but you don't need a brace for that. But it gives more options to the end user, and in a survival situation options are your best friend!

I was a USAF fighter jock, post-Nam through Storm 1. I have no actual combat time but was 'combat ready' for many years and I have talked to a lot of crews who did including Nam POWs. The biggest problem I see is that, unless the USAF gets serious about small arms training for the crews, the weapon is worthless. During my flying career I was supposed to 'qualify' with the M-15 (.38) once a year. Often even that did not happen. There is a vicious circle of not taking small arms training seriously and ignoring the training which leads to more apathy toward the weapon. It didn't help that, evidently, during Nam, a lot of .38 ammo sent to war was defective with under charges of powder. Word of this spread like wildfire. The USAF spent extra dollars to buy S&W Model 15s with adjustable sights then NEVER allowed them to be fired and sighted in. Even when we DID go to the range we shot 'training revolvers' - not our squadron's guns that were kept stored in an armory. The training guns were fired thousands of times a year and suffered significant wear and tear which added to the lack of confidence many had in the issue weapon. I personally campaigned to take the whole squadron to the range annually, have every flyer shoot and sight-in his individual weapon and qualify with it. A lazy NCO running Life Support opposed it as drawing weapons and returning them to the armory was 'too much added work' once a year. Never mind that firing YOUR weapon would give you some confidence that it would actually shoot and that you could hit something with it! Yes, some fliers questioned whether or not the squadron's guns would even fire. On the rare occasions they were actually issued during 'exercises' (without ammo!) I demonstrated how a pencil with an eraser dropped down the barrel into an empty cylinder on a cocked .38 would fly out the muzzle when the hammer was dropped thus proving the gun would fire! There is a phenomenon I observed with many fliers that I think applies to GIs in general: 'if the USAF issues it, it must be junk!' I know one flyer who became a POW who refused to load his .38 as he thought it useless and threw it away as soon as he was on the ground in North Vietnam. Also the level of ignorance regarding handguns at times shocked me. One of my squadron commanders told our Life Support branch to only issue five rounds of ammo so there would be an empty chamber under the hammer. This man had flown two tours combat in Vietnam and had no real idea how a modern revolver worked and he was totally uninterested when I tried to explain how the 'empty chamber' was a holdover from the Single Action Army in the 1800s. During my career I figured the .38 (and the later M-9) had only three serious uses following bailout in enemy territory and going Rambo against an enemy squad or platoon was NOT one of them: 1. To hold off a mob of angry locals till the army showed up to accept your surrender 2. POSSIBLY to shoot the soldier who finds you hiding and then take his rifle - problem is few fliers knew how to use any enemy weapons. I did, but that is another story. 3. To use on yourself in areas where POWs were routinely tortured and killed or start a gunfight you know you are going to lose Use number three brings up the probable motive for the USAF to develop a rifle that could be stowed in the seat pack survival kit. In our current areas of operation, 'save the last round for yourself' again rings as true as it did for the cavalry in the Indian Wars. In the theaters we send our crews to fly today, they may as well shoot it out with the enemy as becoming POW is not a viable option. So I'm damn glad they have developed the rifle and would have loved to have had one under my ass the 2,000 hours I had phlying a Phantom. But I stand by my opening statement about significant training for the aircrews. As you see, the Corona Quarantine gives me a lot of idle time to type.!

I was a USAF HH53 CSAR pilot, and we carried the GAU5. Never fired the thing, but smaller size was useful when getting in and out of the cockpit. Compared to today’s weapons it was very light.

Hey Chris. What do you think about the feasibility of this system for hot swappable barrels? Heavy fluted barrels and drum fed might make a good light support weapon. Repeatability of sights isn't an issue on this one. Cry Havoc said their system can handle the heat but didn't know about the upper. What do you think?

I think GAU-5A is more compact than the Sig MCX because the GAU-5A disconnects the barrel from the upper. The MCX with the stock folded is still longer because the barrel is still mounted to upper.

I was at Aviano when these first came out and just happened to qualify when the pilots got these new rifles and man they're slick. Super compact, much more than a sig. And they're just as accurate as an M4 imo. Great handy rifles imo and the pilots really loved them.

CAR-15 was not a survival rifle, but a carbine, usually carried by special forces teams and leaders of combat units, if available. It was the basis for the M-4 carbine.

To a non military person like myself s suppressor for this rifle seems like a good idea. They are such noisy guns that can be heard for miles. I'm sure they though of that and there is a good reason. Could it be that a combatant with a suppressed rifle may be treated differently from downed aircrew if found?

More likely that a suppressor is a rather long and bulky thing, and may have to get rid of things such as signaling tools, emergency rations and water purifiers, and possibly ammunition.

An interesting product, however... How is this elaborate QD barrel system superior to just push-pinning the upper and lower receivers apart? A breakdown and reassembly method, I may add, which requires no special training, since any serviceman who knows how to clean a rifle already has it down. Seem to me like someone figured out how to sell something to Uncle Sam which he didn't realize he already had.

Not really. Springs could possibly get weak if taken on and off hundreds and hundreds (perhaps thousands) of times. Gun would still work fine just have loose tabs.

The G-forces from flight would press the mags hard into your body it would be quite uncomfortable/painful, also pilots are really not going down fighting insurgents with no anti air weapons.

I have both the Dolos & the Cry Havoc TD systems. Even though the Dolos seems quicker to assemble, the Cry Havoc system is much better. The gas tube is well protected from damage, you’re not limited to a couple of handguard choices, and you retain zero after numerous breakdowns and reassemblies.

Dolos can only use a proprietary handguard the Cry havoc can use any handguard. also the locking mechanism is more secure on the cry havoc

Obviously I'm not qualified to say what the air force should or should not use. But I'm curious if the HK MP5K or MP5K-PDW had been used for aircrews in their packs. Then again considering it's the Air Force, what condition their weapons are compared to the Army and Marines that are all worn out and held together by cheap 3rd party knock off parts.

@@SmallArmsSolutions Agreed. 9mm is 9mm, that's got a max effective range of 50 yards, nevermind if you're just using FMJ. MCX Rattler with a 5 inch barrel is still devastating out to a hundred yards when feeding M855A1, the low velocity gel tests I've been able to find are quite impressive.

Just a question.. Why not just use a 10.5 inch barreled upper and break it down by taking the upper off of the lower? seems like a trained pilot doesn't need a fancy break down barrel if he can just assemble 2 pins and be on his way...

Not Sure You get a much shorter package this way. The length of the upper crosses over the lower, so splitting the two results in less saved space. Taking down from the barrel reduces the overall length of the system in terms of packaging.

Detaching the barrel allows for stuff to get inside the gun as well. Looks like the bcg needs locked back.i know they chose this design to save space but I think a short barreled sig side folder would be a better choice because yea this thing breaks down small but it still has the same overall footprint and because it’s in parts you need a case for everything.id rather have a sig or a 5.45 ,5.56 krink just strapped down

Yep, a mix of all of these things. MAC did a direct comparison to the 10.5" and the overall length disassembled is still longer than this one with a 12" barrel, plus all of your internals are captured.

This was a weird series of events which led to him picking it up. I was over at his house to record videos and he asked me to pull some info on USAF firearms for a model plane video he was about to do. For whatever reason this was near the top of the results. When I searched for details, Midwest Industries store page was at the top AND they had them in stock. When Misha went to order one the next day or so, they went out of stock, showed backordered, but when he backordered it, he got an order confirmation and a ship notice shortly thereafter.

I don't see the need for the folding grip, it seems like a unnecessary failure point. I can see the brace over the issue M4 stock if perhaps the pilot is injured.

Seems like a taxpayer funded overly expensive novelty in my opinion. Sure, it's neat, but if we are talking about a "desperation" behind enemy lines survival weapon, possibly used to take an enemy battle rifle, then a readily available 8.5" barrel AR "pistol" or SBR with BUIS and 4 magazines would fill the bill and be just about as compact with the upper and lower separated. This seems like most other things the government does, there are readily available products that will do what they "need" done, but they "want" something with "special" magical specs that is overly expensive. I guess they aren't spending their own money so spend away. This may be a very small example, but this is how government spending and budgets get out of hand, and we tax payers are left footing the bill.

Ericka C I don’t believe 8.5 in bbl would meet the reliability. No military will go with less than 10.3 due to reliability issues.those shorter barrels are fine for commercial use but not military use.

@@SmallArmsSolutions In the past they were using .22 long rifle, .22 long rifle rimfire is less "reliable" than centerfire, but it was used as a "desperation" behind enemy lines cartridge where the downed pilot wasn't looking for a fight but just hoping to hold out and stay hidden until rescued. There are tons of 8.5" AR pistols and sbr running reliably in all manner of calibers. And I'm sure as a firearms guy you know the 8.5" can be "tuned" to be very reliable by barrel gas port size, adjustable gas block or spring and buffer combinations, all of which are cheap and available. But I do still think the takedown barrel design is interesting.

As usual the Air Force missed the plane .... that thing should be suppressed. Nothing like a downed pilot saying I'm over here as he shoots his rifle. I know a suppressor is not zero noise but it would help. Adding a quick disconnect muzzle device and tossing is a suppressor would not take up any more room.
