He was born in this place and has lived here for 40 years. He has witnessed the city transform from a small farming village into a sprawling metropolis. Whether it is a ghost town or an economic bubble, he deeply loves this place and is even willing to spend his time showing you the best parts of his city for free, hoping you can share in his pride. This Chinese fellow is truly admirable, even though he is just a humble taxi driver.

If only Americans could feel the same way. That despite our troubles and worries, we are a free and happy people. If we had that same kind of pride in our culture, the whole country would be greater. We don't even live under a communist regime. We have every reason to be proud. And yet, we are so privileged we complain about the little things. Americans love to complain about our first-world problems, as if everything we have means nothing, and as though millions of people didn't die to make our comfort possible.

Do you know why there is no tipping culture in China? Because in China, no matter what occupation, are equal, they pay labor, receive equal remuneration, do not need extra tips, because tips are the so-called aristocracy to the servant, and there is no such culture in China. Therefore, taxi driver is not a humble profession

So stoked you got to check out China! I'm Mexican-American and spent a year teaching out there. I can't go more than a few months without going back ever since. The people are so friendly and welcoming and the infrastructure makes the USA feel like it's in the dark age xD. It's a shame the people of China get lumped with their government in the West.. Also, as you saw, I don't think the first taxi driver who went into the store for change was trying to scam you. China is an almost cash-less society. Almost all day to day transactions are done digitally, so many people don't readily have cash available. It's quite remarkable really. Some do consider the first guy a type of scammer though, depending on your perspective. You're essentially paying a premium for not having to wait in the long official taxi queue. But it is considerably more expensive. I've learned this the hard way lol, but you did negotiate it down decently. They can get pretty expensive if you accept their initial offers. Also, the population of random ass cities still boggles my mind too xD. And McDonalds are all over China, even at the peaks of some famous hikes. Many hiking places in China have plazas at the top. Makes me so happy to see how much you enjoyed your time and how amazed you were man! Reminds me of what I love so much about being in China. I'll be heading back there soon and you've got me wanting to fast track my visit to Inner Mongolia hahaha. Cheers man, keep showing people this beautiful world!

I live in an American city of roughly the same population, and seeing so many high-rise residential buildings makes me understand why people call this a ghost town. In definition, I'd say the same because of just how large it is. But your driver? He showed you the true heart of Ordos. This is a community that has fully accepted the hand they've been dealt, and they take advantage of it without blinking. Much love for the people of Ordos City, from these United States of America.

I really liked that in China, after dinner everyone in the community went out for a walk around the city's river or just stay neighbourhood, people dance, there is street food, kids play, and this is small rural city, something we lost in my country I barley see my neighbours. Its sad bc the chinese media doesn't vilifiy usa like the us and otger western nations does w/ china it's constant anti china propaganda. Media may say its going after the ccp but that hate has a profound affect on the psyche of americans developing bias and hatred against the chinese ppl but also trickles down to not only chinese ppl but east asian ppl in general living in the west. The racism xenophobia and prejudice against asian americans is more subtle than years past where it was more overt.
