Lovely display of trees and tutorial on leaf reduction! Great in-depth look at the processes and techniques involved in producing smaller folliage. Very helpful!

I can't wait! A friend gave me a black oak, so this is a video I've been looking for. Have a Japanese maple that I collected from a pile of rocks and trash that is behind our building, so for a couple of years it was a stick with one leaf, and each year that leaf was smaller and smaller anyway. I actually collected it because I got all soppy about this sapling fighting a losing battle, and wasn't really thinking about bonsai. The successive years she grew two actual branches with more leaves that were small, and when I followed Jele's pruning video, and especially the re-potting video with cutting the roots, for some reason, she took off with eight branches, and all I had to do was pick the shape I wanted, and cut the rest. All the leaves are small without a lot of effort on my part, but I think it's because of the rocky start. But if you so desire to do more videos about oaks, that will be my next re-pot in February. Love the information in these videos.

Good information. Have defoliated several of our maples. Leaf size, that year “and” subsequent years was smaller. But not for all varieties of Maples. Trying the cut leaves to see how that works over the years. Keep them coming.

Great vid, usual great quality 😊. I have worked on this process on ficus bengalensis and microcarpa. As they ramify th leaves get smaller. Also defoliating and pruning in autumn means that they have less of the growing season for the leaves to get large. Full sun exposure helps, as they need less foliar mass to capture light. Haven't worked on this with maples yet . Although one of my cuttings grew tiny leaves only after winter and they have not gotten any bigger. Then again it was a very ramified piece of branch. You are very right about the internode size as a determining factor on leaf size. Thank you for the clear explanation.

Merry Christmas Jonathan - I hope you and your family have a fabulous time, and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025. 🎁🎄⛄️ I’m hoping to add a couple of big pine trees to my collection very soon - expect more on pines next year 😄

Thank you for the video, I did manage to do partial defoliation on few horse chestnuts and it helped with the massive leaf size, also elderberry seems to react the same way
@TheBonsaiGardenАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. My understanding with horse chestnut is that the leaf CAN be reduced somewhat but will always remain proportionally quite large, and better in a large rather than a small bonsai.
@misovalachovic4988Ай бұрын
True, same with ashes. Also horse chestnuts suffer in the uk with the rust of the leaves, so you can enjoy the foliage just for a few weeks, but still fun to grow one or two

Just a bit of constructive feedback - the video appears quite blurry and pixilated. Not sure if this is the norm or if you’ve recorded on a different device 😊
@TheBonsaiGardenАй бұрын
Not sure why there is an issue with this video, they are normally filmed and rendered in HD as a minimum. I will have to investigate. That can also happen due to poor connection to KZbin.

No issues watching on my Samsung tablet screen. I would pu forward that those with such viewing issues *recheck* their settings. In the past I've had similar happen, I've then checked the settings to find it had set to a LOW, 720dpi, for no known reason. Setting again for HD/1440 has resolved it.
@CuteButStabbyАй бұрын
@@FrankEtchellsI’ve checked my settings and they’re all normal/how they usually are (on the higher quality end). I’ve done this on my iPhone and projector and the quality is definitely a bit blurry and pixelated in specific sections. Perhaps it’s a filter that’s being used on the video too? No hate! It’s just feedback 😊

@CuteButStabby just offering up as a possible cause as I read your comment as issues with the whole video and not parts of - sorry for that 🙏. I've seen some videos where the camera has lost focus for short times... just another possible 🤔🙏. I didn't read your comment as 'hate' in anyway, nor was my comment made in response in such a way - just offered to he helpful to any with similar viewing problems. 🙏🙂

Hi Jason. I appreciate everything you do to produce quality bonsai tutorials. If there is only 1 thing I would be wary of, is the AI influence in scripting. I understand it’s a new world with amazing possibilities, I just feel like your personality is becoming second to code 😢. Your videos and content are incredibly well thought out and assembled and I will continue to enjoy your content ✌️
