I flew my quadcopter and filmed him for this. I'm reaaaaaally good! ;) It would have been a 360 camera like the Insta360 or GoPro Max. When filmed with something like a selfy-stick you can mount it to the camera in a way that when the camera does its magic to stich the picture together, it completely hides the stick and looks like it's floating. As he deploys the chute you can see him grab the pole it's mounted to.

Weirdly they've made the effort to try and hide it from the camera angle of the person on the top of the cliff when he jumps off. You can see the badly hidden blur. Then just before he pulls his chute, he makes the selfie stick smaller, probably due to what you mentioned, so it doesn't get caught
