Rats can be one of the biggest pests in the home or on a farm and they can spread disease throughout your home your farm animals and also to us humans.
Some rat diseases can be deadly and are not pleasant if you catch one. This is why is it a good idea to keep them at bay. rats can become immune to all sorts of passions, so it is better to keep switching from one to another and if possible use many kinds. This way you will know that they are not getting used to just one type that you may be using..`?
Rat-borne diseases can be deadly for several reasons:
High Transmission Rates: Rats are known to carry a variety of diseases, including bacterial infections such as Leptospirosis, Salmonellosis, and rat-bite fever. These diseases can spread rapidly, especially in areas with a high rat population density, making it easy for them to infect multiple people quickly.
The severity of the Diseases: Some rat-borne diseases, such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), are particularly severe and can lead to life-threatening complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These diseases can progress rapidly and require prompt medical attention to increase the chances of survival.
Resistance to Treatment: Some rat-borne diseases may be resistant to traditional antibiotics or other forms of medical treatment. In some cases, the disease may be so severe that even with the best medical care, the patient may not survive.
Lack of Vaccines: There are currently no vaccines available for many rat-borne diseases, which can make prevention and treatment more challenging. This means that the best way to avoid these diseases is by preventing exposure to infected rats or their droppings.
In summary, rat-borne diseases can be deadly due to their high transmission rates, severity, resistance to treatment, and lack of available vaccines. Therefore, it is essential to take preventive measures to avoid exposure to rats and their droppings, particularly in areas where rat populations are high.
You can also use some of these household products to make homemade rat poisons:
You call also mix this plaster of pairs with peanut butter to make homemade rat poison
This is a homemade rat poison using plaster of Paris
Use homemade rat poison with borax
This homemade rat poison safe for dogs
homemade rat poison using antifreeze
Rats have been known throughout history to carry many diseases and you want to make sure you can keep them under control.
This is an easy and cheap method that will kill every "RAT" on your farm.

Great advice. Best part is also that if any Predatory Birds get a hold of the Dead Rats, they wont be harmed by eating the flesh. If poison used, the predatory Bird would also get poisoning so this is an amazing & far less harmful alternative.

I just spent the last 4 days watching my best friend, a 6 year old German shepherd, die of rat poisoning. Yes, I took him to the vet but it was too late to save him. He showed no signs until five days ago. I understand poisons must be used, but, please be ever so careful if other animals are around that area. I used what were suppose to be (pet safe) PVC traps that a rat is forced to crawl far into in order to find the poison/food. A rat dragged a piece out from the trap and my dog ate it. There is no greater a pain, or, guilt than knowing one has killed his only friend. Please be very careful with poisons.

I suspect that the reason it works so well isn't that it sets hard in the rat's intestine but because Plaster of Paris takes in lots of water which would dehydrate the rat and cause a swift death. It gives off heat as it reacts too.

This recipe works well - one thing I learned though: Don't use cup-a-soup that has noodles in it. The rats will just paw through the mix looking for all the noodles. The mixture still works, but it takes longer (a few days instead of 1 day) and they make a bigger mess. I plan to vary the approach by making a version with cake mix, then when that's done, peanut butter powder, before cycling back to soup mix as the attractant.

We've had so much rain this year that the rats moved into our chicken coup and duck house. They've bitten the chickens, eaten eggs and attacked chicks in the brooder. It's heartbreaking. We respect wildlife and won't use poison baits. Considered the water bucket system but concerned about finding young birds in the buckets. This brilliant, simple and straightforward concoction is EXACTLY what we've been needing! Love the simple things. Will substitute the plaster of paris with baking soda because we need to save our hens, chicks and eggs ASAP! Will follow up with you on our results! Thank you!

Follow up: IT WORKS!! We combined equal parts baking soda and flour, then divided the mixture into 2 containers. In one we added cinnamon powder and the other coco powder. Each placed near entry/exit holes with water nearby. Took about a week for them to consume it all, but it's clear the vermin numbers have dropped! Birds are happy and we're back to collecting more eggs than eggshells! We plan on trying different flavors each month. Ramen noodle seasoning packet or powdered sugar sprinkled just enough to add a scent and some flavor. Just to be clear... THIS WORKS! 👏🙌

That’s great. I will try this. I don’t have chickens but I have fruit trees. Orange, a small banana one, and huge grape vines. Last year when the grapes came in the mice would feast all over the grapes at night. Birds and squirrels too but not to the same extent. And they’re also not as disgusting as rats. Do you still use this method when encountering vermin? Also, did you ever try peanut butter? I keep hearing it’s rats’ favorite and the smell is super pungent. Thanks for sharing, I will try this!

I have found about 10-20% of my rats are too smart to approach a regular trap of any kind, I found that by covering a Rat trap with blown in attic insulation to camouflage the trap, I get them all. I only leave the peanut butter on the trigger showing. That hides the mechanical trap and they walk right onto the covered trap and it gets them. I discovered this with a surveillance video camera I used to watch. I had seen that the smart ones could distinguish any trap type. When I hid it with insulation, it fooled them every time.

It works great, but you should skip the plaster of Paris for a few days and feed them the flour for a bit to get a taste for it, then you can be sure they'll grab it with the plaster. Make little paper wraps they can carry away to scoff , then you know they'll get a good dose, when the wraps don't disappear, you know the rats have.

Honeslty if they are not caught in a trap or cage then any poison they are going to go back to the nest and if you can find the nest then you could remove them. But I have never smelt a dead rat after being poisoned and I own a chicken farm. `I only smell them when I lift up the board or whatever they are hiding under, as they do find really tight areas to go and die. Yes, there is a possibility but if you did smell a little because if it was a strong smell you could literally follow your nose. So if only a little smell it will be gone before you know it. People always scare people by saying that it will be like having a dead body in your room, but that's just not true honestly they are scaremongering. Go ahead and get rid of the rats. Good Luck

Hi small farmer . Just of interest for what reason does this not affect chickens eating it. Im seeing rats coming into chicken run so would I be safe enough to leave a tray of this in there . I'm having success with the snap trap , peanut butter inside box method but I doubt the 2 rats I saw this evening would even fit in the box .

Also baiting Carrots and Turnups with Just one Bite poison pellets ground up to a fine powder and mixed with the C&T.As soon as it starts to get dark one of the Rats start bring the food down from under the stairs into their burrow. I also saw one of the Rats drink the Peroxide/water mixture. Im not sure how long all that will take to work but ill keep doing that and from time to time change up the bait with your Mc French Fries suggestion.

Your add of soup is brilliant and I was thrilled I could by-pass dough balls. They were careful to get into it but obviously loving it now. But ding-dong, lol, new rats? I'm only seeing brown rat and figure it's more than 1 with 3 peanut butter lids spread about, emptied. LOL, white dust left the trail. Unreal! I also used a Peppermint oil concoction. Oooo, they don't like that at all, hehe. I'm encouraged having come across your vid, again. I just came in from the garage to review my rat research becoming doubtful. The vid previous to yours talked about the dough balls and how they'd dry in the gut. Your results would indicate gut fluids in the animal would be enough to activate the Plaster of Paris. Gosh, I love the simplicity of just setting out powder. I've not given up. I need to find how they're getting in! Thank you for sharing....I enjoyed your vid, lots!

Chickens have an organ called the gizzard. Chickens dont have teeth, so they eat sand and gravel that stays in the gizzard, where muscle contractions grind their food with the gravel to produce small digestible pieces. The plaster of paris wouldnt be a problem as it too would be ground into small enough pieces.

It's illegal to make your own baits in Australia. But fipronil is quite a stable chemical and is used by the old boys, at a 10000% cheaper . More often more effective because you choose a food sources that are appealing on day. Ants can vary proteins one week, fats the next. This is why you have to keep swapping your methods of poison younger rats are easier to get as they are not as wise. But just keep switching it around from one to another. It's more about trying to keep their numbers down as they are always around or one or two left here and there and that's all you need. I have killed thousands over the years but I go for the big kill once then leave it to see how its done, go out with torch on a night see what I can see remove all feed and then try to use something else to mop up the rest until I see nothing when I go out with a torch. If I see the odd one or two I use an air rifle on those to headshot and they are stone dead

I was told once that the old rats send out the younger ones to search for food and if they find some the old ones won’t eat right away. @@darkknight8222 Can't confirm that it does. Been sitting out is 6 places for at least 3 weeks. Nothing seems to have touched it.

I have a raccoon problem. They visit my backyard every night and cause a real mess. I've tried everything to repel them. Electronic repellers, coyote urine, various spays. I think I've finally found the solution! I bought a 2 pound jar of Habanero pepper powder. Very nasty stuff. I sprinkled this around the periphery of my back yard to include any entry point for the critters. From the first night after the application I have been free of visits from my furry friends. First raccoon free nights in weeks. It seldom rains here in Utah at this time of the year. So I think if I just do a reapplication 2- 3 times a week and after a rain this might be my solution.

Well done all you can do is try, you may want to search for old tales of how people got rid of those things. I have found plenty of old ways to deal with things like red mite in chicken coops etc, I mean they had to use something before all these new products came to market. Turns out bleach at really high concentration works awesome, so keep an eye out for what they used back in the day. Good Luck
