This same thing happened to a guide and client below chickamauga dam about a month ago. They caught close to 60 smallies and many over 4-5lbs! These dams are truly special!

For some smaller fun, I caught at leat 30 smallies in 4 hours at lake Britain in California, then caught a awesome rainbow trout in the neighboring Hat creek

For the bigger ones it really is the size of the mouth (jawline), markings, and the ruff spot on the tongue

I would say if it gets to 60 at night and stays consistent you can start to find them spawning.
