It was always a mental block that kept him from flying. He did it when saving Lana from the tornado. And later when he was Kal-El and not Clark. He could always do it. But he needed to truly believe he could do it. When the moment came, Clark soared high.

Yea, it's basically like how Humanity has proven throughout time that we're capable of doing things we could only describe as "supernatural", but our minds are so closed off to being able to control or control such capabilities on command, because they just seem so far fetched due to the reality that we ourselves have confined ourselves to... Things like spontaneous combustion, teleportation, esp, foresight, telekinesis, super human strength... etc... there's plenty of examples throughout human history where humans have either learned how to wield such abilities through lifelong training, or just moments of pure shock, like when a mother finds the strength of will to lift a car off her child during an emergency, or when people have inexplicably woken up miles away, sometimes even in another country, without any recollection of how they got there... Humans are capable of some pretty fantastical feats, we're just pre-programmed to think it's all impossible or psuedo-science, because what scientists have created as the foundation of the universe, rules like gravity, time and mass, are things that we can't even fully understand, but somehow we've all been brainwashed into thinking that those so called "foundational elements" of the universe can't possibly be broken by the human mind, even in the face of repeated examples throughout our species' history... In the same way, Clark, having been raised on Earth, was also brain-washed by humanity into believing some of his abilities were impossible, like flight, because they'd be breaking the laws of gravity, but once he'd looked back at all the moments when his subconscious would take over during an emergency, which is generally how he found out about most of his abilities, combined with the aid and training from Jor-El, like Neo in the Matrix, Clark finally began to believe, against all of Humanities beliefs in science that flight COULD BE possible, especially for a higher being like himself... Once he'd fully become Superman, he'd meet plenty of normal humans who also garnered super human abilities like Flight and super speed, either because of accidents or magic or otherwise, and it'd become even clearer to him that his self doubt was the thing keeping him from being able to fly, more than anything else... the block is broken, the doubt was gone, now he could fly... from this point on, he was Superman.

I would say that his inability to fly is a metaphor for a person who doesn’t believe in himself,but when remembers the past, he realizes that he had always had the power. Just like when doubt ourselves, but don’t realize what we are capable of and I think we learn a lot from watching this video.
@gengarvenom11805 жыл бұрын
It's a metaphor for accepting his destiny. Throughout the show, Clark struggled with coming to terms with who he was. He wrestled with the idea that he was Kal-El, the last son of Krypton. Never knowing who he was or what he was meant to do. By the end of the show, he was fully realized. He had discovered who was. This is the moment where he truly became Superman. He never doubted what he was able to do or what he was capable of, he feared it like he did his destiny. The only thing he ever doubted was who he was.
@gengarvenom11805 жыл бұрын
This is also very clearly shown in the episode Crusade. Clark was completely taken over by Jor-El. He has forgotten his life as Clark Kent. He knew who he was then. He knew his destiny. In this episode, he was able to fly with ease. When Martha tells that to Bridgette Crosby she understands this as completely embracing his Kryptonian destiny. You have a nice idea, but it is wrong as far as I know. If you can present some evidence to support the idea of your metaphor, I might change my mind.
@markotodorovic70135 жыл бұрын
I like that you are seraching for a meaning but i think it was just not practical. Even in the finale which i'm assuming had bigger budget it looks funky, you can see by his body position that he is clearly on suspenders.
@gengarvenom11805 жыл бұрын
@@markotodorovic7013 It was practical. The show would end when he accepted his destiny. He wouldn't be able to fly until he truly became Superman. Obviously, that isn't the real reason, but that doesn't really matter. The writers work their obstacles into the story. Characters in TV shows get killed off because the actor had to leave. Sometimes it was always intended to be part of the story, but most of the time they needed to be written out. The real world has a large part to play in what can and can't be done. It's a writers job to make it fit. That is what they did here. It was beautifully done. This was a clause that they knew they were going to have to stick with, and my analysis is consistent throughout the show. When he accepts his destiny, he is able to fly, when he hasn't, he can't. If you can prove this wrong. Feel free to, but just saying "it wasn't practical." is looking outside of the story for answers.

To me, those circles weren't just his power limits. It's the mental block in him - that deep down he doesn't want to see himself as any other than the humans on the planet. But over here, it's time for him to face it and be himself fully. He's Clark Kent *and* Kal-El, not one or the other. And by fully accepting who he was, he finally freed himself and be Superman.

These things are integral part of everyone's life. A time will put everyone into all these trials but Clark succeeded and becomes a superman. We all should need to look back into our life and remember sacrifices which will give us a strength to achieve our destiny. That's why SMALLVILLE is a special series.

My opinion is the same but a little nuanced. I do agree that we should've had more flying. I just think smallville represented Clark Kent best and espcially Wellings portrayal. However Superman is portrayed better in other tv shows, thats granted. Please stop being rude now 😭😭 smallville is called smallville for a reason, it makes complete sense that he starts flying at the very end because the entire show is about Superman's chilhood and teenage moments. This show is not about superman but Clark Kent and this is what people seem to forget. This show and scene were amazing and if you want a superhero that already knows their full potential and power go watch supergirl

I remember getting stupid excited when our boy took flight as himself not Kal-El or in a dream sequence, but as Clark Kent, Superman, baby! This scene just oozes inspiration and screams hope a la Christopher Reeves.

One of the many things I liked about the show was that it wasn’t rushed to show Clarke just becoming Superman n the hero we love. It showed his struggle n him growing into that hero. We saw him fail (many times) but also battle with his own judgment to be a someone that would be a hero n saviour. Yes it annoyed me that we didn’t see that suit n stuff but o also love this scene as we see his journey n finally him fly as he fully embraces his destiny

Many complained we d8dnt get that close up of him in the suit. That when it was close, it was just his face. Remember, for 10 years Clark was the hero, not superman. After him saving the planet, he was going to be known as superman, and Clark was going to get to be himself. By showing the close ips of his face, and not getting to see him in the suit, it was Clark's last chance to be the hero. Also, for once in a superman show/movie, Clark was the center of it and not just supermans alter ego.
