I like the idea that Tom didn't try to get into the source material. He didn't want the source material to control how he reacted to things. You see this alot in tv/movies that are originally brought to life through books/comics/graphic novels. I know sometimes people get upset that they think the actors don't respect the source material but imo I believe it's one of the most respectful things you can do. Clark shouldn't know he will end up as superman or that he will eventually fly.
