Thank you for your time and effort. I just did the work on my 451 this morning. Your video was very useful!

Thanks for your video. After Watching it a few times, I've built the confidence to go ahead and do this. Hardest part for me was the T30 near the valve cover, I gave up and also carefully hacksaw the plastic near the T30. I also cut with the hacksaw the part where you also cut. Following your instructions, it took me about an hour. ((If anyone doesn't have T30, Just Cut the Plastic near the T30 near the Valve Cover)) Tools Used: Flat Head, Small Mini Hand Hacksaw from Autostore, some Paper Towels, Degreaser Orange Organic kind. Thanks so Much PG Garage! You Rock

Forge make pipes that come with metal barb and air baffle box does come out without cutting, you just need to deflect engine cover lip slightly at the rear its easy and bends back perfect. Keep up the good work!

Nice! I’ll check out the forge units before I order another one!

I know this is a relatively old video but I thought it might help anyone considering doing this modification if I shared how I managed to get the OEM resonator air intake box out without having to cut it up. Remove both retaining clips from filter box and throttle body and remove short hose from air filter end. Remove the only resonator mounting screw down the righthand side of the box. Pull up on lefthand side of the air box to release the plastic retaining ball mounted on a two arm frame below and pull the box towards you revealing the mounting frame below. Now the important bit! You need a SabreCut MRSC06 flex head mini micro ratchet and T30 TORX bit to even stand a chance of removing the screws available from Amazon for less than £15! The resonator box support frame has two T30 TORX bolts holding it in place. Both of these need removing. The left hand one between the resonator and the air filter is easy. The second one is a bugger but by using the fantastic tool above, it is doable but it took me ages to remove.. feeling around blindly to locate the TORX bit! Once both bolts are removed however, the support frame just drops down and can be extracted from below. By doing this you create the vital space below the resonator box to be able to tilt it further back and down and with a little gentle wiggling the whole box will come out intact! I hope this helps. I've done a KZbin video on my KT Technic channel if you want to see this done visually! Enjoy! 🐾❤️

I'm going to try that!

The reason the resonator box is so hard to take out is that the idiots at Mercedes designed the car so that the engine is built and then installed, and they didn't give any thought to ease of maintenance so Mercedes could charge customers obscenely for labor.

I don’t think any company builds a car to make it easier for at home mechanics. Just look at any of the newer Ford pick ups work virtually any service you have to take the entire cab off the truck. I don’t think it’s entirely to do with just charging customers more money I’m sure that’s a factor but sometimes it’s also just a result of how they have to package the things.

one more major benefit: it's much easier to clean the throttle body

Dude I’m a mechanic of 25 years under my belt and I couldn’t get that son of a bitch out to save my life so I did the exact same thing I cut the neck of the intake off and it came out thank you for making these videos

Glad people are enjoying them! I’m no mechanic but I feel like the vids at least might help people see what they’re getting into before starting a job!

Thank you for your video! I installed the forge hose for my smart. But now there is a vibration on the air filter box and on the side air intake, i had no idea how to fix it because all components are fixed...
@PBGarage2 жыл бұрын
It’s possible that you dislodged the intake pipe that sits under the plastic bodywork on the left hand side of the car.

also check filter box is closed correctly' like actually pushed back when closing the box before clamping the front clamps. The filter box if the back is flapping when clamped then you' then you need to take lid off and on correctly. Ez

What is the metal barb size/diameter if you dont mind me asking?
@MrMr12311 ай бұрын
I need to find a barb fitting, I got the one with the little barb but it was a joke. Barb that came with it, was like 1/4” and the hose is like 1/2” I need to take it off and go to Menards and try and find a larger Barb…. Question, wonder if we can just plug it and put a small air filter on the crankcase vent 🤔🚗
@PBGarage11 ай бұрын
You could do that, but I would be worried about moisture getting into the filter since it’s low and at the back of the car rather than in a “normal” car where it’s up high near the firewall at the front of the car. Same reason alternators on smarts seem to fail often, lots of dirty water getting kicked up into the engine bay by the front tires.

Mine actually came with a metal barbed nipple that was already installed in it I got it from Smart Madness

Yeah it’s been great. No performance difference but really cleans up the engine bay.

What about the fuel consumption?
@PBGarage2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t expect much difference in fuel consumption but it’s actually seemed to be a bit better so far. I need to run some more tanks through it though and see whether it’s consistent or just a fluke because we’ve had really hot weather lately.

I got it on eBay. If you just search up smart 451 intake you’ll get tons. Just make sure the one you order has the metal nipple.

Let ys hear it...smh waste of video
@PBGarage15 күн бұрын
I tried to film it with a couple different cameras, and with my mic placed near the intake but when putting the video together they sounded identical. It’s so close to the stock sound I think you’d be hard pressed to tell while driving if it had the intake or not. When I installed it I felt like it sounded a bit louder on the intake side, but it really didn’t come through on video so maybe it’s just placebo effect.
